Most experts pick Larsen, Petrojan, Fischer and Korchnoi to advance to the semifinals later this summer. Connoisseurs the world over are already anticipating a Larsen- Fischer semifinal COPENHAGEN.

(UPI) -Denmark's chess grandmaster, Bent Larsen, is in snoozing good shape for the start of the 1971 world chess quarter-finals tomorrow that eventually will produce a challenger for Russia's world champion, Boris Spassky. Larsen concedes that he trains for these matches by getting a lot of sleep, seldom clash. hTe 28-year)Id Brooklyn-based Fischer, for years one of the bad boys in world chess, won the 1970 interzonal tournament in great style. He lost only one game in Spain, to Larsen, 36, who took second place after a slow start. Many experts thought it unfair to the two "Western" players that they should meet in a simifinal, but it did not bother Larsen.

"There is not much difference in quality at the top, and I believe I have one or two tricks up the sleeve for Bobby, should we both get that far again. Bobby has never played this sort of game before with all the tension and special atmosphere." arising before noon. He calls himself Denmark's champion stay-abed. It apparently is a successful system. He has twice gotten to within playing distance of the title, losing in 1965 to former champion Mikhail Tal, and then being crushed by Spassky in 1968 in the Russian's surge to the title.

In the quarterfinal round, Larsen faces East Germany's Wolfgang Uhlmann in Las Palmas Spain. Former world champion Tigran Petrojan will face West Germany's talented Hans Huebener in Milan, Italy. STANFORD, Calif. (UPI) -The Stanford University School of Medicine is about to begin training physicians' aides (PA) who could be life savers for overworked doctors in rural communities. At the same time, the physicians' assistant program at Stanford and similar doctors' helpers programs at other schools could become an employment outlet for a pre-v i 1 unused manpower source military medics and nurses.

Dr. Michael Dennis, director of Stanford's PA program, says California's rural communities face a critical shortage of doctors. Many of the small town general practitioners are so overloaded with patients they can't take vacations. DOCTORS QUITTING "These guys are threatening to quit," Dennis said. "In fact, they are quitting." It's not a situation of California not having enough doctors, Dennis said, but rather a problem of distribution.

"Most of the doctors are in the urban centers," he said. Last November Gov. Ronald Reagan signed a bill legalizing physicians' assistants for general practitioners. The measure specified that the aides can assume functions delegated by the doctors who employ them. In other states, such as Washington, North Dakota, New Hampsire, Texas, bama and West Virginia, doctors' aides programs are already being used.

AIDES' DUTIES At Stanford, PA students will be trained in such skills as taking medical histories, physical examinations, assisting in major surgery and masting house calls. "In other places," Dennis said, "these people have been cutting down the doctor's workload by 60 per cent." Stanford has already selected 20 students for its first PA class and is awaiting a go-ahead from the California Board of Medical Examiners, which must approve a school's program. Dennis said he expects the board's approval of the 12-month training program shortly. "As soon as we get the word we'll start the program," he said. The board also must approve doctors who apply for assistants, which could lead to a controversy among the medical profession.

Doctors traditionally have avoided any sort of medical service evaluation, and those doctors who want aides would face a review by the Board of Medical "But this could lead to better medical service in rural Dennis said. vftZq, LLOYD'S 8-TRAGK STEREO SOUND SYSTEM FJULTIFLEX STEREI WITH FMAMFM STEREO RADIO 8-TRACK STEREO TAPE PLAYER 2 ACOUSTICALLY BALANCED SPEAKERS IN 15 ENCLOSURES Thrilling: new dimensions in stereo sound are yours with this precision engineered unit! (UPI) -JJow that the fashion world caught up with the Navy's 'bell bottom trousers, the Navy js abandoning flared trousers its working uniform.

The Navy also is making the big switch from buttoned flies to zippers. The bell bottoms and buttons will continue to adorn the blue and white uniforms worn when sailors are not doing manual labor. But the new trim-line working trousers started in service in April and the old belled dungarees must be cast aside by June 30, 1973. Navy officers said it was the first major change in uniforms since World War II. Less noticeable, but perhaps more significant than the passing of bell bottoms, is the adoption of zipper flies.

The uniforms of officers long have used this remarkable invention but officials blame traditionalist supply officers for 1 having blocked its adoption in the past for enlisted men.
