An investigator teams up with an Adult Features 2883052 ter, Patrick Dempsey (6:30) 4442781 I accident-prone accountant in hopes his pratfalls will help him find a missing heiress 5263762 The day I died was an ordinary school day. How I wish I had taken the bus. But I was too cool for the bus. I remember how I wheedled the car out of mom. "Special favor," I pleaded.

"All the kids drive." When the 2:50 bell rang, I threw all my books in the locker. I was free until 8:40 tomorrow morning! I ran to the parking lot, excited at the thought of driving a car and being my own boss. Free! It doesn't matter how the accident happened. I was goofing off going too fast. Taking crazy chances.

But I was enjoying my freedom and having fun. The last thing I remember was passing an old lady who seemed to be going awfully slow. I heard the deafening crash and felt a terrible jolt Glass and steel flew everywhere. My whole body seemed to be turning inside out I heard myself scream. Suddenly I awakened; it was very quiet.

A police officer was standing over me. Then I saw a doctor. My body was mangled. I was saturated with blood. Pieces of jagged glass were sticking out all over.

Strange that I couldn't feel anything. Hey, don't pull that sheet over my head! I can't be dead. I'm only 17. I've got a date tonight. I'm supposed to grow up and have a wonderful life.

I haven't lived yet I can't be dead. Later I was placed in a drawer. My folks had to identify me. Why did they have to see me like this? Why did I have to look at mom's eyes when she faced the most terrible ordeal of her life? Dad suddenly looked like an old man. He told the man in charge, "Yes, he is my son." The funeral was a weird experience.

I saw all my relatives and friends walk toward the casket They passed by, one by one, and looked at me with the saddest eyes I've ever seen. Some of my buddies were crying. A few of the girls touched my hand and sobbed as they walked away. Please somebody wake me up! Get me out of here! I can't bear to see my mom and dad so broken up. My grandparents are so racked with grief they can hardly walk.

My brothers and sisters are like zombies. They move like robots. In a daze, everybody. No one can believe this. And I can't believe it, either.

Please don't bury me! I'm not dead! I have a lot of living to do! I want to laugh and run again. I want to sing and dance. Please don't put me in the ground. I promise if you give me one more chance, God, I'll be the most careful driver in the whole world. Responsibility for the new show as well as "Sunday Today" goes to Mike Clancy and David Page, now top producers for "NBC News at Sunrise" and "A Closer Look." They'll continue in those roles as well. Clancy and Page's appointments don't mean, NBC says, a racy "Saturday Today" despite the recent tabloidy tone of "A Closer Look." Looking for a new assignment is Sunday Today" and "Meet The Press" chief Gerry Solomon, who helped guide Sunday Today into its current magazine format Briefly LOS ANGELES Stephen King's novel "The Stand" will air as a miniseries on ABC next season A new series from producer Steven Bochco, an R-rated drama breaking language and nudity barriers, has been reworked without the R-rated concept and picked up by ABC for mid-season. College Baseball: University of Hawaii vs. Grand Canyon (KGU-AM). KHNR's studios are at 850 Richards St and the staff is composed of 12 full-time employees, which includes four news anchors. It is targeting listeners 25 and older, skewed slightly toward males. The station also hopes to have short local features, such as movie and video reviews.

One already in the works is a 13-part "Headlines in Hawaiian History" series with De-Soto Brown, an archivist at Bishop Museum. Being looked at is an afternoon-drive comedy spot with the group Booga Booga. Armstrong, 55, said he was enthusiastic about being back in radio. He said he started as a disc jockey here in the early '60s, worked in Los Angeles and Pittsburgh, returned to Hawaii as KGU operations and program director from 1973-1981, before going into TV sales. For the past three years he was KHON-TV's sales manager.

"There's a ton of ideas out there, and not having somebody up above me to say, 'You can't do is a wonderful feeling," he said. "It's a nice chance to stretch out." although Armstrong said an option is "Hawaii News Radio." Initially, a typical half -hour will start with 13 minutes of the CNN feed, followed by six minutes of local news, and then national sports and business segments. The station will get its CNN signal via satellite from Unistar Radio Network a Colorado firm. Associated Press will supply Hawaii news, although Armstrong said a reporter has been hired who could cover local stories. An earlier plan to use KITV reporters to file reports "appeared to be a little cumbersome for the TV station," he said.

Armstrong thought the CNN audio signal would work well, saying the network changed its writing to minimize video references and suit the needs of 123 affiliated radio stations. Additionally, he said CNN is writing in 90-minute cycles so there will be less repetition. "Probably 99 percent of the time, it serves as a straight, typical radio feed," he said. "I feel comfortable about the fact that it won't be one of those kind of bastardized television-to-radio feeds that says, 'Now here's a picture and you're stuck." 'i I. jf i Ico rL i fVM.

Bernie Armstrong, KHNR's vice president and general manager, said it will be the only station in Honolulu where listeners can learn about national, international and local events around the clock.

"We're not going to do play-byplay sports and all that," he said Friday. "Any time somebody tunes in, we're going to be doing news." Armstrong said the station will be testing its equipment this week and working out any kinks in its format. The official sign-on date is March 30. KHNR is broadcasting on the frequency once used by KORL-AM. KORL went off the air after filing for bankruptcy in 1987, and was bought last year by Los Angeles attorney George Vandemann.

Shareholders include former Gov. George Ariyoshi, developer Tom Gentry and KITV general manager Richard Schaller. The new call letters officially stand for "Headline News Radio," 7 l.m.
