Eddie is a jewel and we know his parents feel an honest pride in watching the development of the remarkable talent he manifests.

A friend writing from New Orleans says 'The oity is busily engaged in making the most extensive preparations for the approaching Carnival. One hundred and six ty-four Dukes and Duchesses and also a large number of other courtiers and mem- bers of His Majesty's court are already registered at the Royal Palace. Their early arrival indicates the attendance of an unusu ally large crowd to receive His Majesty and to obey bis behests. His Most Excellent Grace, Bathurst, Chamberlain to His Majesty, has informed me confidentially that it is the pleasurable purpose of the King to grant letters patent of Dukedom to several of Montgomery's favorite citizens at this Carnival" "Will the Jews return?" is further dis cussed in to-day's issue in "E's" reply to "A Jew." The subject is oertainly one of much interest to both Jew and Gentile, and is handled by the disputants in a manner both pleasant and instructive. Our readers have doubtless observed that "A Jew" and gentleman by the way of great learning and well posted in Jewish history, declares that Jewish faith discards the coming of a personal Messiah, He teaches that now the Jewish doctrine is that when the wor ship of the only one true and living God prevails in all tbe world, when the knowl edge of Him shall cover the whole earth as the waters cover the place of the migh ty-deep, then the promise of a Messiah will have been fulfilled.

Our able correspond ent combats this position as not being the orthodox Jewish doctrine with what success let our readers say. LAHEY 9, AHEY Cloths, astiimeres, err Sun All ery Superior, Thirst-Class Cutter. -Line ine Work lone. Hats and plaps. ats and vaps.

Miss Charlotte Dexter, whose mortal re mains were interred on Wednesday last, in our City Cemetery, was the last surviving child of Andrew Dexter, the founder of the city of Montgomery. The remains were deposited in the same grave with her mother, who preceded her to the better country on the 17th of August 1819.

On the north, in the same lot, her brother, Andrew Alford Dexter, who died in December, 1853, was buried. Her brother, Saml Dexter, died nearly forty years ago, in Mo- bile, and was interred in that oity. The mother, Mrs. Charlotte Apthorp Morton Dexter, was a sister of tbe late Governor Morton, of Massachusetts. Andrew Dexter, the founder of our city, died in Mobile in 1837, comparatively poor.

In 18G0, one of our old citizens hid diligent search made in the Mobile cemetery for bis grave in view of removing the remains to our city cemetery, but his efforts were una- aiiing. That same old citizen suggests that the citizens of Montgomery owe it to themselves and to the founder of their beautiful, city to erect an elegant and stately monument to his -memory in our city cemetery, the oldest portion of which he generously donated for a burying ground when.he laid out his town, in 1817. He thinks that doubtless if a subscription is started in the right way a few thousand dollars for that purpose could be obtained. Who will inaugurate this commendable movement, to honor the memory of one who should ever be held in grateful remem brance by all generations of our city 7 Our City Fathers are asked to purchase a por trait of Andrew Dexter to ornament the council ohamber, which elegant painting is offered to them at the low price of fifty dol lars. The accomplished artist, Mr.

David, has lowered his price in view of the de pressed financial condition of the oity and as his share cf the contribution in honor of the founder of Montgomery. We believe the citizens generally would endorse the ac tion of the City Conncil in the purchase of a portrait of Andrew Dexter. Death of De. John 0. Wills.

We are pained to hear of the death of this profound scholar and excellent Christian gentleman, which we are informed, occurred a few days since, in Missouri. We have not learned tne date or outer particulars 01 this sad event. Dr. Wills came to Greensboro about 1858 as one of the original faculty of the South- em University, at Its opening. He was emphatically a good man, and lived an upright, blameless life. The doc tor had been feeble for a long time, bnt the illness whioh carried him off was of short duration, and the announcement of his death will startle many. He was about 68 years of age, and was, if we are not mistaken, a native of this State.
