TJ1 ft There's no doubt about it now. Football is here. A beefy crew of Stranahan Dragons go after the first week of practice like it was the Rose Bowl. All but one of the Broward County schools opened practice this week with drills going on twice-a-day in the Ing sun. Quarterback Dave Ericks is the key man in the Stranahan attack.

Injured last season, Ericks could be one of the best passers in the county despite a lack of experience. A story on the Dragons by sports staff writer Robert Green appears on page 6D as does a preview on Plantation and a county-wide roundup. (Staff Photo by Lou Tomtn) it. The blast, on va 3-2 pitch from Ray Washburn, sailed over the right field fence at Candlestick Park and vaulted Mays ahead of Jimmy Foxx on the all-time list.

The Giant center fielder, who tied Foxx the night before, now trails only Babe Ruth and his 714 homers. Ruth batted left-handed. "I feel real great about it," Mays said afterward. "This is the first time anyone has achieved this in so short a time. The rest of those guys Tho Associated Press Willie felt great; Sandy felt pain.

Mays' feeling came in the fourth inning yesterday when he hit a home run that triggered San Francisco to a 4-3 victory over St. Louis. Koufax' came in the second inning of Los Angeles' 5-1 loss to Cincinnati when he hurt his arthritic left elbow. The home run was an historic one. It was the 535th of Mays' career and made him the second greatest homer hitter and the greatest right- Dodger team physician.

"The elbow hurt him all season, but usually the pain is between pitching assignments. "It's possible that Sandy will be able to warm up on the sidelines two days from now' and then take his usual starting turn if the elbow is not swollen." Koufax, whose next scheduled turn would be Sunday, received a cortisone injection in the elbow, then placed it in a bucket of ice the usual ice treatment he gets after a game. Fortunately for the Reds, they didn't get Koufax' usual treatment during the game. In other National League games, New York edged Pittsburgh, cutting the Pirates' lead to one-half game over San Francisco; Chicago trimmed Philadelphia 5-3 in 10 innings and Atlanta whipped Houston 6-1. Koufax' elbow apparently hurt in the fourth inning as he loaded the bases on walks.

Leo Cardenas then rapped a double, driving in all three ''runners. That was enough to hand the southpaw his seventh defeat against 19 wins. Aug. 18, 1966 ID had 20 year, and I've had only 15." Koufax was seeking his 20th victory last night but instead wound up with a sore He hurt it in the second inn-, ing when he struck out the side but didn't leave until the fifth. Robert Kerlan, Joe Auer Joins Dolphins Nobody asked me but Cookie Gilchrist is the perfect example of an itinerant football bum, whatever exactly that is. Bo Roberson hasn't signed his Miami Dolphin contract because he wants as much money as flanker Frank Jackson. That comes to $25,000, and personnel, director Joe Thomas doesn't want to give it to him. The Dolphins will win more games than the Atlanta Falcons no matter what exhibition scores indicate. Carl Mildenberger has no more right fighting fof the heavyweight championship than Willie Pep.

is the most boring farce ever foisted on the sporting public. John Brodie won't be worth a hoot for the San Francisco 49'ers this year because he got too much money. A guaranteed $950,000 for 10 years would dull anybody. The Dolphins wont draw 30,000 for their home opener Sept. 2 against Oakland, and that is a terrible indictment of Miami football fans.

Miami football fans are the worst in the country. Team loyalty and hometown loyalty is something completely foreign to them. They booed the Dolphins only 21 minutes after the Kansas City game started. Something more is wrong with the New York Yankees than is on the surface. The best baseball players in the American League don't become among the worst in less than two years without reason.

4 Paul Hornung wanted the job Tom Nugent took as sports director of Channel 10 in Miami. A lot of football players hate" the ground San "Diego's Sid Gilman walks on, but you'll never hear one say he isn't a great football coach. The United States Football League will never get off the ground. Otto Graham will be booed more this season than any coach in Washington Redskin history, He will also catch more heat from the press. Notre Dame should consider itself lucky with a 6-4 season this time around.

Miami will have the best college football team in Florida, maybe one of the best in the south, for 1966. Dennis Ralston will never lead the United States to a Davis Cup title, but Arthur Ashe might. Home town decisions by boxing officials are just as rotten as a fighter taking a dive. Soccer is a more physically demanding game than football. Parents who encourage their children not to participate in athletics because, they might get hurt are doing more damage to the youngsters than any football injury.

People who most often ask for free tickets are the ones who can most afford to buy their own. The biggest pest in a press box is the guy who isn't supposed to be there in, the first place, and then complains about facilities. ,1 The American Football League rule barring reporters from locker rooms for at least 10 minutes after the final gun is nonsensical. Most locker room quotes from coaches are nonsensical, too. The Dolphin coaching staff carries the best credentials in BOCA RATON-The Miami Dolphins today moved to shore up a critical shortage of running backs with the signing of former Georgia Tech and Buffalo Bill halfback Joe Auer.

Auer was an All-America prep star with Coral Gables High School in 1959. The 6-1 200-pound back was picked up from the Los Angeles Rams yesterday after being waived out of the National Football League. Coach George Wilson said Auer would work out with the Dolphins today, and, would be ready to play against 'the New York. Jets in Jackson- ville Saturday. He was a starting halfback at Georgia Tech for three years and a member of the Bills for three years." In the first two games, the, Dolphins displayed almost no punch on the ground despite -using several different back-field combinations.

Yesterday for the second night running, Baltimore scored five runs in the ninth inning, snatching the game away from the disbelieving Boston Red Sox. By the time the blitz had ended, Baltimore had an 8-4 victory Tuesday, the Birds came from behind with five in the ninth to win 6-4 and on Monday they tied it in the ninth and went on to win 4-2 in 11. DON'T KNOW "I don't know who can stop them," moaned Boston Manager Billy Herman, "but I know, we can't in the ninth inning." Baltimore Manager Hank Bauer, who is now beginning to admit that his team might just win the pennant at that, said, "We've pulled out of a lot of games in the eighth and ninth.

I don't know exactly how many; but there have been a lot." Yesterday's attack started with consecutive singles by Russ Snyder and Brooks and Frank Robinson, filling the bases. A walk to Boog Powell (the safest way to pitch to him these days) forced in one run and a single by Paul Blair accounted for another. Elsewhere in the American League, Detroit beat New York 4-2, Minnesota clipped California 5-3, Cleveland bumped Washington 5-3, and Chicago took a pair from Kansas City 4-2 and 5-1. Bauer, who confesses to having a pennant clinching party all planned, said, "Too many things can happen in this game to become over-confident, but it's a lot better feeling- being where we are than chasing other clubs." $1795 plu. 1 Full Srt Inslnllod I $2.78 Tax" All Weather Protection professional football with George Wilson, Bobby Walston, Les Bingaman, Bob Pelligrini, John Idzik, Ernie Hefferle and Tom Keane.

Practice for National Basketball Assn. teams opens Sept. 7 which points up the ridiculous overlapping of professional sports. Pittsburgh's "Black Maxers" is the best gimmick to come out of a baseball club in the past 10 years.

The National Football League and CBS will deaden interest in pro football eventually by offering too many games on television. State supervision of Florida's pari-mutuel sports is designed to stifle them Instead of aid them. The racing commission and executive office outlook is so backward it is almost criminal. 1 A youngster playing minor league football in the Continental or North American Leagues is only fooling himself, and wasting time. The trophy has a curse on it. Cooler heads in the nearby training bivouac at Fairfield, may pooh-pooh the existence of such a jinx, but the fact remains that receipt of the silverware has proved a quick ticket to obscurity, if not oblivion, for a whole slew of prize Giant freshmen. The first to be struck also was a fullback like Frederickson. He was Bobby Gaitors, and as a rookie he performed numerous deeds of deering-do, including, if memory serves an unblemished record as executor of the fullback option pass.

Then Gaitors was tendered the rookie award and the next item concerning Bobby was his disappearance from camp. It was like a trap door had been sprung under him and quite some time elapsed before he was discovered trying to make the grade in San Francisco with the 49ers. That was five years ago. When last reported, the Giants' first rookie of the year was playing in the Continental League, or is it the Atlantic Coast League? The next to be jolted by the jinx was a very fine linebacker, Bill Winter. He quit the Giants and is out of pro football entirely.

Then there are the cases of rookie award winners Jerry Hillebrand and Lou Slaby. The season after Jerry captured his cup he had the devil of a time holding on as a second-stringer. As for Lou, who won his award as a middle linebacker, he was shunted from position to position and now is playing at defensive tackle on the second team. And how does Frederickson feel about the virulent hoodoo? "I don't believe in jinxes," he told Slaby when Lou warned him about it in the early, days of the training camp. But that was before Tucker injured his knee.
