It is the first day of Canada's 100th birthday her centennial anniversary and what a proud and prosperous 100 years they have been.

The year-long birthday party began with the ushering in of the New Year. Bells, whistles and sirens sounded in every communtiy as special church services were held to mark the beginning of the centennial year. The celebration honors the 100th year since Canada got its Confederation Act. The centennial program has many facets. Forsyth Notation: The great master Capablanca once remarked: "There have been times in my life when I came very near thinking that I could not lose even a single game. Then I would be beaten, and the lost game would bring me back from dreamland to earth.

Nothing is so healthy as a thrashing at the proper time, and from few won games have I learned as much as I have from most of my defeats." Since it is a matter of health to attend the chess club and receive a bit of a beating sometimes, please try to be on hand during the following months. The Chess Club of Ft. Lauderdale meets at the YMCA at 518 NE Fifth St. on Monday eve- nings. The club will be open tomorrow evening as usual.

The Pompano Beach Chess Club meets Thursday evenings at St. Martin in the Fields, 80 SE 28th Ave. One may join the Florida Chess Assn. at both clubs. The Florida Chess Assn.

carries the motto, "For Cultivation of Mind and Friendship." With authority from Capablanca to include health benefits as well, one would indeed be shortsighted to put off joining up. Dover Publications has published "My Chess Career" by Capablanca, with a comment by Irving Chernev. This consists of a series of games taken from age 12 on toward the Hastings Victory Congress in 1919. Capablanca has furnished excellent annotations, and this edition should certainly be of interest to any players now lacking this book. A suggestion has been made to have an informal gathering of new players who could practice up on each other without at first meeting head on with the regular club players.

They could meet not only at the club, but at the homes of the various players, depending on what arrangements any individuals wished to make. If interested in this, please stop in at one of the chess clubs or drop a card to the Chess Editor at the paper. HAPPY NEW YEAR. By BARBARA FRYE United Press International TALLAHASSEE Haydon Burns relaxed in the gold leather chair in the Florida governor's office for the last time. Through the broad windows behind him came the sound of hammers as workmen completed the platform for the inauguration of Claude Kirk. Two years ago, all the rush and preparations had been for him. Now it was over.

Reminiscing for a moment, Burns harked back to the Christmas-New Year's season of 1964. "When I think of the problems of building an administration, I know the deep decisions that Kirk is grappling with right now," he said in a final interview with UPI. HE'S GLAD "I am glad at this moment that my term is closing rather than just beginning." But, he was quick to add that being governor was the high point of a full life, 18 years of which was spent in public office. And he said he would not hesitate, if the opportunity presented itself, to do it again. "I will be eternally grateful to the people for the privilege of serving as their 35th governor.

No governor has ever enjoyed more cooperation and NEWS OF THE STATE support from the cabinet, legislature and agency heads. "If I were needed in the future to provide leadership, I would accept it as the greatest challenge that can be shouldered by any man." SLIP AWAY Right after he turns over the reins to Kirk at high noon Tuesday, Burns will slip away to his Jacksonville home. He will open a private business consulting firm, Haydon Burns Associates, with offices in Jacksonville and Orlando and with accounts already in his pocket which he said are national and international in scope. "One of the happiest privileges of serving as governor has been the complete cooperation and assistance of members of the he said. "After two years of actual experience, I can from real depth appreciate the great benefit that comes to the people from having decisions made and shared by seven statewide elected officials rather than depending just on the pronouncements of the governor." He had high praise for his wife, Mildred, saying "She has taken a greater part and been more constantly active in affairs of state that involve the first lady than any previous governor's wife.

The people have shown great love and respect for her as first lady and that is most gratifying to me." He expressed gratitude to the men and women who "accepted my invitation and challenge to give their services to the state. In my judgment, it will be a long time before more competent citizens can be induced to pick up the responsibilities of state government." In many ways, Burns said, the past two years has gone by very fast. "It's been a real full two years," he said. Asked if he had any advice to pass on to Kirk, he said: "My advice to the incoming governor, although I am sure it is not needed, would be to lean heavily on his colleagues in the cabinet and to establish both personal and working relations with all members of the legislature." All in all, the outgoing governor said, he was satisfied with the accomplishments of his bobtail administration. He said his greatest accomplishment was the stride toward the goal of "quality education at all levels." In his inaugural address, Burns said if history remembers his tenure for but one contribution "then let it be said that we devoted our maximum experience, courage and labor toward helping Florida reach a peak of excellence in 1 its entire education system." Peering through the curtains at the makeshift inaugural platform, Burns said softly, "This we have done." He listed these accomplishments, with the help of the legislature and cabinet, during his term: Education: record appropriations for public schools, junior colleges and universities, including preparations to open new universities in Pensacola and Orlando and a law school in Tallahassee and authorization for institutions of higher learning in Miami and Jacksonville, a medical school in Tampa and dental and veterinary schools in Gainesville; creation of a university system chancellor; abandonment of the trimester system in favor of a quarterly system of year-round university operation; establishment of a system of vocationaltechnical centers; the Haydon Burns scholarship fund for needy average students.
