The non-profit organization was designed to strictly help underpriviledged children. Born and raised in Kalihi, Kimura grew up in a housing area and said living in a tough neighborhood was a good thing. From that experience he was introduced to organized sports. "Drugs are what we deal with today. Cocaine traffic is heavy and we're talking about intermediate school aged children." He sees that involving them in sports will teach them discipline, teamwork, and sportsmanship.

Sports helps young people deal with frustration, something Kimura sees as true for his generation as well as the current one, "Yesterday's fists are today's guns." The organization accepts children 9-years-old into the program. I am impressed with the multi-culural peoples of Hawaii and the opportunites found here." Among her qualifications are a nursing degree from the Catholic University and a masters in sociology from the University of Hawaii. When asked about her chosen vocation as a nun she answered, "Only God knows why." She has served as hospital administrator for 31 years. 15. "The greatest joy in my life is to see people growing," and Sister Maureen's involvements as a member on the hospital board and the Newman Center Board gives ample opportunities for observation. Professionally she is a fellow of the American College of Hospital Administrators. Her interests also include the hospice movement and it's development here. Her support comes from her staff.

"Our people act like nothing is too much for them, so how can 1 act differently?" Her goal is to handle the administrative aspects of her office without forgetting her mission, "I'd hate to think you couldn't integrate business and humanity. Last week in a board meeting, someone said, 'The more we have high-tech the more we need high-touch." I believe it." Something else she believes was authored by St. Francis, "It is in giving we receive" she elaborated to say "I believe that it's not that we give to receive." On the day she was interviewed, Sister Maureen was to attend a service for a man, 19, who died a few days before Christmas. His reputation as a troublemaker went by her and she accepted him as someone who needed attention. When she passed him on the hospital grounds they would hug each other and sing his favorite song Amazing Grace.

One day he presented her with her favorite dish frozen yoghurt. Thinking of his limited income she said he shouldn't have. He answered her concern with, "Who wants to always be on the receiving end." Sister Keleher finished the interview, took a phone call and chose a gift for her godchild and went on to her next meeting. Ted Kimura Ted Kimura, president and owner of Island Termite, made a deal with himself long ago that if he ever was in a position "to do something good for society" he would. In 1968 he gave back in a big way by starting the Aikane Foundation.

Aikane in Hawaiian means friend. The foundation was started to "basically keep kids off the streets and to help them become better citizens." Kimura began with only eight teams in the Kuhio Park Terrace area, now there are 200 teams. Last year nearly 2,000 youths went through the program baseball enthusiasts in their 40s. His love of sports was personally experienced at Farrington High School where he played center and linebacker in football. He graduated from Honolulu Community College Trade Tech and spent 7V years in Los Angeles working as a lab technician for Vivian Woodward Cosmetics.

Covering the walls of his office are photographs of various friends congratulating him for being named 1975 Sportsman of the Year and receiving the 1982 "Mr. award which is named after Johnny Velasco, coach athletic director of Radford High School. Kimura is also the recipient of a certificate of recognition for the 7th Annual First Lady's Outstanding Volunteer Award. Kimura emphasized the importance of sports for women too. He said there are many girls out of high school who have nothing to do and sports is important for forming healthy lifestyles and attitudes.

"My personal satisfaction is I feel good. At least I'm contributing to Talking like a coach he said, "You save a few people if they can make the grade." Placed on an office wall is a plaque given to him by an The last words apply to Kimura, "who looked for the best in others and gave the best he had." Carole Eade Carole Eade as director of the Young People's Support Center is conscious of quality time while she works with dying children and their parents during the last months or years of life left to them. The program, which is free, accepts children from birth to 24-years-old and is aimed at improving the quality of life for the children. Eade, a clinical psychologist originally from New Zealand, came to Hawaii a dozen years ago and is the second director the three-year-old center has had. Her enjoyment of working with young people has spanned a professional life of teaching.

Including a preschool, elementary school and at the Leeward Childrens' Team, a program through the state Department of Health. Death is dramatized in television and movies as clean and neat Eade said there is nothing clean and neat about children on chemotherapy, "They throw up, lose their hair parents stand by and watch their children deteroriate."
