William H. Kaina, pastor of Kawaiahao Church. Mrs. Kanahele, 92, of Nuuanu, 'a noted author, educator and authority on Hawaiiana for more than 50 years, died Saturday at home. Kaina remembers Mrs.

Kanahele as a very strong Christian woman who lived out her faith and beliefs. She was in her 70s when he first met her, and "every day she got up alive, she saw as a blessing," Kaina said. "She always gave thanks to the Lord and said, 'Well Lord, what do you have in store for me he said. The two were on a committee that worked about 10 years ago to reprint the Hawaiian-language edition of the Bible. There was discussion, he recalled, over whether the language should be updated.

The Hawaiian version of the Bible originally translated in the early 1800s was the best example of the language ever put in writing, she said. "When she believed in something, she would hold onto it and not let go until people saw things her way," Kaina said. The Rev.

Edith Wolfe from Wananalua Congregational Church in Hana, Maui, said Mrs. Kanahele was a genuine, warm and unpretentious person. Mrs. Kanahele was a "bridge" person someone who could link politicians and common people, the educated and the uneducated, and people of different races and ages, Wolfe said. "She met President Jimmy Carter, and instead of being awed by the president, she said, 'President Carter, I understand you're a Sunday school Wolfe said.

She told the president that Annie Kanahele: Sow each day "as a blessing" a poor Hawaiian girl could do if she became educated, Wolfe said. Mrs. Kanahele, together with the Rev. Richard W. Wong, founded the Kalihi-Palama Walk-In Clinic in 1975.

"When we began, we had no money, no equipment, no personnel and no health background," said Wong, a former Kaumakapili Church minister. The clinic gave free medical services to people of the neighborhood and has grown to the point where a move to larger quarters is being considered, Wong said. Mrs. Kanahele was born in Keauhou, Kona, on the Big Island. She was a teacher and principal at public schools throughout the state during her 42-year career.

In 1971, she was named Hawaii's Mother of the Year and National Merit Mother. In 1981, she was given the David Malo award, recognizing her contributions to the perpetuation of Hawaiian culture. The following year, she was named a living treasure by the Honpa Hongwanji Mission. Burial will be private. Memorial services will be at 4:30 p.m.

Friday at Kaumakapili Church. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations in her memory be made to either the Annie A.
