NBC, for instance, had Jack Paar and "That Was the Week That Was." As for "Laugh-In," there is nothing like a No. 1 rating to soften worries. Flmtston AMERICA'S FAVORITE CARTOON nq Nun MVI NBC may have "Laugh-In," and CBS may have the Smothers Brothers, but, otherwise, they essentially follow the success pattern. ABC, on the other hand, has come up with a number of series that for better or worse, artistically have caused discomfort among viewers who don't like to be shaken up as they sink blissfully into their regular shows. As a result, the series are making more waves than the specials currently and while this may be satisfying on some counts, it defies the commercial axiom: don't disturb the regular audience. But, you may ask, in regard to ABC's What about NBC's "Laugh-In" and CBS's Smothers Brothers? The difference is that both NBC and CBS, in addition to being bigger and therefore more confident, have had considerably more experience in handling this kind of contro On," with its fast topical humor and double entendre. What we have here, upon examination, is the paradox that arises from ABC's underdog problem.

And this is the fact that the network, in trying to chop down CBS and NBC, is going against the grain of the programming pattern that has made its competitors rich, and is a proved success. This pattern, basically, is that you do as little as possible to disturb the comforting nature of most regular series for viewers and save your excitement and shake-it-up programming for specials. PROGRAM DROPPED The five days a week "Stock Market Report" is being dropped after tomorrow by WAJA-TV, Channel 23 (UlfF) because of the lack of sponsor interest. The program has been aired from 10 a.m. to mid-afternoon since the station went on the air about two years ago.

Beginning Monday, the station will not sign on until 4 p.m. By RICK DU BROW IIOLLWOOn. Calif. (UPI) When ABC-TV canceled its controversial new series, "Turn-On," it pointed up the paradox and problem of the network, smallest of the three major broadcasting organizations. The situation is that, as underdog network ABC-TV tries to break down the programming patterns of its two larger competitors, CBS-TV and NBC-TV, because it cannot compete with them on their own terms.

In order to achieve this breakdown, ABC frequently takes a gamble with longshot programming hoping a way-out show can turn into a very hot fad that shakes things up, and draws attention, and money, to the network. "Batman," though shortlived, was a successful gamble. So was "Shindig," a youth-oriented music show. This season, ABC tried the Don Rickles series, built around the comedian's insults. It tried "The Ugliest Girl in Town," about a boy who dresses as a female model.

It tried "The Outcasts," about two cowboys, one Black, the other White, with friction between them. At midseason, it tried "Turn- SALLY FIELD STARS AS THE SUNNY, BOUYANT NOVICE WHO KEEPS CONVENT SAN TANCO UP IN THE AIR. STRANGEST UNIT 10.O0Dm Ads Of The News ft learned anew all it cares to know about controversy from the Smothers Brothers show. The smaller ABC, attempting to follow the success of "Laugh-In" and the Smothers Brothers, aimed to shake up its regular series viewers again last week when it introduced two new topical humor shows: "Turn-On" and "What's It All About, succeeded, then backfired.

As an indication of ABC's plunge into controversy, both these new shows, plus a third midseason premiere last week, the Tom Jones hour, had on three successive nights satirical barbs i which the Catholic Church was the target. Paul, the husband, was threatened with the loss of that lovely money and in the dead of night sneaked out and did something to the brakes of her car. Just as the wife was leaving, a woman she had hired as a secretary arrived. They left together in the car, which went over a cliff and the secretary was killed. We daytime soap opera viewers knew what would come next.

The dead woman was mistakenly identified as the wife. Our heroine suffered amnesia and didn't know who she was or recognize her husband. For the rest of the show, Paul was sulking around making unsuccessful attempts to kill his wife before she recovered her memory. After each failure, he would grab a bottle and get drunk. Earlier, on CBS's "Lancer," Frank McHugh used to play the best drunks in the movies made one of his rare guest appearances.

He played a Western drunk. The series, built along the sturdy "Bonanza" lines, is standard cowboy stuff, with a touch of heart added in the Tuesday night episode. The Lancer family father and two sons wanted to bring law and order to Spanish Wells but some bad guys wanted it to remain an open town. There were some beatings and a little shooting but it was the town drunk who was brave enough to volunteer to build a jail, the first step toward getting a marshal. The whole business was so uplifting that old Charlie went on the wagon.

As Westerns go, "Lancer" must be counted into the family category. That just means that fighting and shooting are deemphasized. Comedian GETS It-Rating Bill Cirty'j back and has an (Nu one under 18) slapped on ti is show. New show under controversy is at the Spanish Lounge in Margate. State Rd.

7. Phono 972-3242 First show 9 P.M. Adv. rim l1vi By CYNTHIA LOWRY (AP TV-Radio Writer) NEW YORK "Any Second Now," one of those feature-length films NBC has made for its "World Premiere" series Tuesday nights, was one-quarter suspense, one-quarter soap opera and about 50 per cent padding. But somehow it was sus-penseful and sudsy enough to hold the viewer's attention for the full two hours minus all those commercials, of course.

The film which would have made a pretty good one-hour show had a complicated plot that relied almost entirely upon coincidence and it had one of the glossiest, most maladroit villains since George Sanders retired from movie features. MADLY IN LOVE There was our heroine, Lois Nettleton, cast as an enormously rich heiress madly in love with her husband, played by Stewart Granger, a suave and handsome' rotter if ever there was one. The couple set off on a Mexican vacation and encounter a touring group of students led by an attractive schoolmarm. It took about a half hour to set up the circumstance, but the wife stumbled across her husband in the arms of the tour leader. She announced, when he returned home, she was leaving to get a divorce.

Then the plot thickened. 6Ice Capades9 Highlights Those who may have seen the current edition of "Ice Capades" during the skating extravaganza's national tour will get some "added attractions" on the television special of same that NBC will broadcast Feb. 16. The video version, filmed late last summer in Atlantic City as the 1969 show was about to start its annual tour, has singing and comedy contributions by television personalities Jack Jones, Nancy Sinatra and Louis Nye.
