Golden State Warriors coach Don Nelson was enamored of Manute Bol's shot-blocking potential from the first time he saw him reject dozens of shots while playing in the United States Basketball League four years ago.

Washington Bullets coach Wes Unseld's admiration for the 7-foot-7 center's one-dimensional defensive ability lasted less than one season in Washington, where Bol's nickname for three years was "The Project." "We didn't have the luxury of keeping him this season," said Unseld, who was designing a new passing game that made Bol, with his limited offensive skills, even more of a liability. "We knew his defensive capabilities, but we also knew we were losing a starting center (free agent Moses Malone), and we wanted to find someone who had a more complete game." So, the Bullets swapped Bol to the Warriors for backup center Dave Feitl, whom they thought had more scoring ability. Recently, the struggling Feitl, who lost his starting job to defensive-minded Charles Jones, had one of his best night's of the season, scoring 14 points in 19 minutes. But it was Bol, the Bay Area's new sports hero, who emerged the clear-cut winner in their first head-to-head encounter. "This was definitely Manute's game," said Nelson.

The Bullets had relied heavily on the shooting of Jeff Malone (34 points) to forge a 61-55 lead early in the second half. But with the score tied, 71-71, and three minutes left in the third quarter, Nelson called on Bol, and the Bullets' offense suddenly unraveled. Washington no longer could go inside, a lesson rookie Ledell Eackles learned after Bol swatted away two of his driving shots. Bernard King (3 for 14) was equally frustrated by Bol's presence. "I warned our guys that they would funnel everything to Manute," Unseld said.

"I told Eackles to pull up for the jumper, but he kept trying to beat Manute and found out the hard way." Bol, whose every move is cheered by Warriors fans, finished with nine blocks and nine rebounds six in the final quarter, and also found time to contribute five points, including a dunk off an offensive rebound. "I still have good friends on the Bullets," said Bol, whose wife, Atong, and 6-month-old daughter, Abuk, were among the crowd of 13,485. "It hurts to see guys like Malone and (John) Williams struggling to win some games. "But I am happy here. This is a nice place to live, and I am playing more minutes. They wanted me for defense, but I also get a chance to shoot occasionally.

"I don't mean anyone harm. There are no grudges, and I won't talk bad about anyone. But I heard them say in Washington that they could not beat teams with me playing four-on-five. Well, this time, I guess, four did beat five." Nelson waited four years to land Bol and now considers him- self fortunate. "I wanted to draft him when 1 was coaching in Milwaukee and Manute said he wanted to turn pro in 1985," Nelson said.

"I loved his potential, but I got voted down and we (the Milwaukee Bucks) selected Jerry Reynolds. Looking back, I considered that a major mistake in judgment. "But things have a way of working out. If I had picked him then, he'd still be in Milwaukee and I wouldn't have had the opportunity to make this trade. "Manute has done even more than I expected from him, especially as a rebounder (averaging seven rebounds in 22 minutes).

He is also coming around offensively. I don't mind him taking that sky hook. It's that push shot that worries me."
