FORT LAUDERDALE NEWS AND SUN-SENTINEL, Saturday, Sept 7, 1968 5B Area Youths Find Home-Like Atmosphere In South Florida Center Boystpwnls Not A Home; But, It's Almost As Good here. Others like it. Others don't care because they've never had a home in the first place. Generally speaking, it's O.K.," he said. The staff of Boystown, headed by executive director, Father Neil Fleming and rotti keep right on improving the program in the hopes of making well-rounded adults of the dependent boys they get.

Except for Father Fleming and a chaplain the rest of the eight-member staff are all laymen. and went fishing and hunting on the way. I love the outdoors," he said. When he turns 18, Allan wants to go to some of the mountainous states "where the hunting's good" and work there while he studies- for a B.A. in psychology.

He'd rather not go back home. "But I'll probably have to live at home for a while before I can move on," he said. Asked whether he was living with his parents before, he replied, "Yes, with four of them. My parents and my grandparents." He also has a younger sister and brother. "If I had to choose between Boystown and my home right now, however, I'd choose my home.

There's more freedom in a home than in the most home-like institution," said. "Some of the boys hate it By HILDA INCLAN (Staff Writer) BOYSTOWN. SOUTH FLORIDA There's' nothing like a home. But Boystown's pretty close. i "We try to provide our boys with as much of a normal, home-like atmosphere as possible," said John Louis Per-rotti, administrative director at Boystown, a home for dependent boys ages 13 to 18, which is' operated by the Catholic Archdiocese of Mi-ami.

Boys at the camp are perfectly normal nondelinquent. Their trouble stems from a deteriorated home situation or the lack of a home. "We occasionally accept delinquent boys if there is no other outlet for them. We have Junior Haven now," Perrotti said. "The only thing we don't want and can't handle are severe psychological or psychiatric cases," he added.

He explained the home has a qualified social worker but no psychologist or psychiatrist. Some of the boys are sent by the courts. Others are referred privately or by some referral agency. Still others are referred by institutions. This last group comes looking for a more home-like Boystown, operated by the Catholic Archdiocese of Miami, provides a "date car" for the older boys who have a driver's license.

The gray Corvair is quite popular, and the boys take turns on a first-come, first-serve basis. "We encourage dating and extra-curricular activities," Perrotti said. "The boys held a pool party last week and invited their dates over." "We try to keep our program as community-oriented as possible." ALSO WORK Boys attend school in the community and work in it part time whenever possible, Most boys, however, work 'Ion campus at Boystown in any of the many departments, which include gardening, carpentry and kitchen. Recreational programs are provided on campus and on field trips. Recently a few of the boys were treated for a day at Pirates' World in Dania.

"I went last year, but I missed it this year," Allan said. But he wasn't complaining. He took a longer field trip. He went with his grandfather to Canada by car. "I was driving most of the time.

We camped out in tents Boystown looks more like a resort area than a regular home. "There are things here you couldnt have in a regular home," said Allan, a Ft. Lauderdale 16 year old who's been here for about two years. Individual cabin dorms are located in the woody, ranchlike area. All 1 are air-conditioned and the two newest have individual rooms for each of the 14 boys in the cabin.

Two husband-and-wife teams live with the boys in separate apartments, in addition to counselors, or an average of two to each dorm area. A large gay living room precedes the bedrooms in the two new dorms, complete with a private phone for the boys to use. There are sports a-plenty in the 130 acres of land. Baseball and tennis courts are outside as well as a huge swimming pool, about 163 by 82 feet. Badminton, table tennis, weight lifting and a boxing ring are indoors in the gym.

3 HORSES And for those who like riding horses, Boystown also has a stable with three horses, one donkey and a pony. One of the horses is a thorough- .1 tl -p BERMUDA-CLAD FATHER PEROTTI TAKES BOYS ON OUTING Lynch of Pirate's World can use their own judgment. Nights out are frequent. The boys are free to go anyplace they want during these nights. A regular school bus provides transportation for the 44 boys.

The main outlet for supplies is Welfare Square, a big department store type establishment in Salt Lake City, the church's headquarters. Elsewhere, are 10 other church stores, and 104 bishops' warehouses. The program emphasizes privacy.

"No one but the persons who receive aid and his bishop knows about it," said Thomas S. Monson, also a member of the Council of 12. "That way his pride and dignity is maintained." PERSONAL It provides for a personal pastoral decision by which the bishop of a person's ward congregation authorizes him to obtain specified goods at the church store. "It's based right down in the neighborhood," said W. J.

Elldridge, president of the church's -Eastern States Mission in New York. "This matter of local determination allows for necessary flexibility," said Neal Maxwell, a church education and executive vice president of the University of Utah. But chiefly, its spark comes from dedication to the church and to others, Lee said. "Except for this it would all be in shambles. You've got to have this dedication to the ideal and to genuine service." Thousands; of volunteers, not needing help themselves, contribute time and labor to the operation, alongside those anonymously receiving help.

OLD AGE If those volunteering, labor subsequently should be in need themselves' as in old age, "they would not have the feeling of being on charity or the dole," Mpnson said. "They're entitled to it." But for any health, able-, bodied person in need, the program always insures them of some work to do for help, according to their capacities, as much as supervising a farm or as simple as pasting labels on cans. "They feel better if they have something to do for Maxwell said. "Otherwise it's damaging to their self-; esteem." Lauderdale Chamber Singers. HARLEN McGINNIS B.A., B.D. By GEORGE W. CORNELL (AP Religion Writer) A sturdy, middle-aged man packed a crate with free groceries and other items from counters at Welfare Square in Salt Lake City. To bring out his attitude for some visiting observers, a church official asked him, "Don't you feel embarrassed at getting these commodities without charge?" no," the welfare recipient replied, "I worked for it." That's the unashamed, self-respecting view of participants in one of the largest, most unusual church relief operations in the world.

Spurning the dole system, it enables the needy to retain their pride while receiving helpby giving them a job to do for it. I "The element that preserves their dignity is that they have a chance to work for what they receive," said Harold B. Lee, a member of the ruling Council of 12 of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, commonly known as Mormons. In a period of growing welfare rolls, difficulties in rehabilitating the distressed and of intensified attacks on persisting poverty, the church's time-tested and 'highly effective welfare program may of FIRST CHRISTIAN CHURCH 1M0 N.I. lyth St.

A Church with YOU In Its hurt -BIIIC Truths for Today by B. E. Rodgers LOVE AND HATE Recently i statement cime across my desk which caught my fancy. I wish to share it with you. "The seed you nurture determines the crop; it is not enough for the gardener to LOVE flowers, he must also HftTTweeds!" Now that's unique way of putting it, wouldn't you say? But true, "Oh how true!" Lots of work must come before ihe garden is beautiful, namely the WEEDING.

The seed sown and the earth moistened Isn't enough. The eye of a careful gardener must detect the weeds as they first surface. This means constant and careful supervision. Has it ever occurred to you, if the Christian's life is to be beautiful, there's some weeding to be done? There are those invisible as well as visible weeds which must be spotted and removed. The invisible are those, though they can't be seen, that really control the whole being, because they are emotional and mental.

To name a few; doubts, profane thoughts, lustful desires, inward jealousy and unkind attitudes. Sooner or later they surface and grow until complete domination of one's life is fulfilled. Now don't get the idea that visible weeds are unimportant. They are, and must be dealt with. For if a Christian is all he or she should be, they'll Inok like, smell like, sound like and acMikl a Christ-like person.

Get rid of those weeds. The uprooting may hurt a little, but the end. result is gratifying. A long healthy, pleasant, fruitful, Christ exalting life. Central Baptist Church "Strictly Ftmiinmpntnl" "THE DIFFERENCE IS WORTH THE DRIVE" 1011 S.W.

"If you want to preserve a person's sense of independence and self-respect," Lee said, "you have to give him something to do in order for him to feel easy about what he receives." That is a key point of the church's massive and extraordinary system, which aids a constantly changing clientele of up to 80,000 and includes a vast chain of productive facilities whose aim is to work itself into extinction, "What we try to do is to put ourselves out of business," Lee said.

"We want to take the sting out of charity, remove the diffidence a person has in receiving aid and make him comfortable and happy about it so he won't lose his confidence and determination to get going again." COUNTERACTS The plan counteracts the demoralizing features of handout relief which is pointed up in the perceptive, old prayer, "Lord, help the poor to forgive us the bread we give' them." To carry it on, the church has built up a huge agricultural, industrial and business network, including 650 farms, 30 canneries, a soap factory, Following the service, there will be a reception at the church. Refreshments will be served. Pastor Arndt, 28, is a 1965 graduate of St. Louis Seminary. He is married and has one child.
