FORT LAUDERDALE NETS AXD SUX-SEXTDTEL, Sunday, February 25, 1968 11HI But Who'll Answer? Beah Richards or Katharine Ross before this year? Wouldn't they be even better with one writing award instead of two? And the same for scoring? Why wasn't Sidney Poitier nominated? Why did the voters fail to give editing nominations to "The Graduate" and "Bonnie and Clyde," two of the years most imaginatively edited films? 1 part of "Doctor Dolittle" was shot overseas. And are the Academy voters being chauvinistic about rewarding American actors? Only three of this year's 20 nominees were foreign-born vs. more than half last year. Or are the voters simply looking for newcomers? Who ever heard of Dustin Hoffman, Gene a a George Kennedy, Michael J.

Calif. -Questions that are being asked about this week's Academy nominations: If "Doctor Dolittle" was considered one of the five best pictures of the year, why wasn't it nominated for direction or performances? Was Katharine Hepburn's performance in "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" really that good, or was she nominated for sentimental reasons? Why was "Far from the Madding Crowd" sd overlooked? It was named only for original musical score. Has there ever been a year of less distinguished songs? Try whistling any of them. REALLY GOOD? Was "Thoroughly Modern Millie" really good enough to win seven nominations? Why did the voters overlook the performances of "In Cold And didn't "The Taming of the Shrew" deserve more than nominations for art direction and costume design? Do the best-picture nominations reflect President Johnson's plea against traveling abroad? All five were filmed in the United States, although HENRT FIRST RUN HIT! CO JNGERS1EVENS BESLEf FUPPEN ANNE BANCROFT the CAROL CHANNING why? almost too grotesque herself in screen close-up. Beatrice Lillie was far more deserving in the same film.

My picks? Well, that's a dangerous form of fun, but here goes: Best Actress: Anne Bancroft Best Actor: Spencer Tracy Best Supporting Actress: Mildred Natwick Best Supporting Actor: John Cassavetes (Dirty Dozen) Best Director: Stanley Kramer (Dinner) Best Film: "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner." JAME8 ULXKW00L7 JA6GER I CUM humous nomination. James Dean did, for "East of Eden," in 1955 and "Giant" in 1956. Beatty's work in "Bonnie and Clyde" is meritorious, particularly since the actor has been enmeshed in some fairly dreadful films in recent years after a fine start in "Splendor in the Grass." HONORS DESERVED Rod Steiger's "In the Heat of the Night" nomination is richly deserved, as is Dustin Hoffman's in "The Graduate," particualrly for a debuting actor. Paul Newman's work in "Cool Hand Luke" is fine as always, but not too far removed in texture and approach from some of his other recent characterizations. Strangely overlooked was "Far From the Madding Crowd," a not altogether successful film which boasted a magnificent performance by Alan Bates and an equally fine one by Peter Finch.

The film, plus Finch, won best picture and actor awards from the National Board of Review, but were ignored by the Academy. In direction, there was only one deviation from the usually accepted assumption that picture and director go together. Richard Brooks, for "In Cold Blood," edged out Richard Fleischer for "Doctor Dolittle." I don't consider Katharine Ross' job in "The Graduate" strong enough for a nomination, but Mildred Natwick is certainly deserving for "Barefoot in the Park," as are Es-telle Parsons for "Bonnie" and Beah Richards for "Dinner." My real beef is with the selection of Carol Channing for "Thoroughly Modern Millie." Miss Channing is great on stage. Even though she played a grotesque caricature in "Millie," Miss Channing is 4:, 10:10 IROWARO EN0A6EMENT CHRISTIE -TERENCE STAMP 7 ACADEMY DON 'V 1 1 AWARD iiicc ITI" KOSIIMATIONS! While both are problematical dramas, "Bonnie and Clyde" and "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" have no basis for comparison. Yet each won 10 nominations, with "Bonnie and Clyde" winning an edge where it counts, both leading players, three supporting players, picture, direction, cinematography, costume, story and screenplay.

"Dinner" honored Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn, but not the third star, Sidney Poitier. With three top films in 1967, Poitier was not nominated at all, although he should have been for "In the Heat of the Night." Dissimilarities do not end with the two top pictures. "Doctor Dolittle" is an all-family delight, with not a problem in sight. "The Graduate" is a modern sex comedy. "In the Heat of the Night," a hard-hitting look at Southern bigotry, is also notable for its unique story line.

PROPHECY PROVED This writer's prophecy about Florida's Faye Duna-way has proved right. "Bonnie and Clyde" is the Bascom girl's third picture and she displayed the talent she exhibited only briefly in "The Happening" and "Hurry Sundown." As Bonnie Parker, she was a match for Warren Beatty's brilliant Clyde Barrow. And the pair emerged victorious in Arthur Penn's curiously impressionistic version of the legendary depression bandits. The Hepburns, Katharine and Audrey, both deserve their nominations, as does Anne Bancroft. Not having seen the great Edith Evans in "The Whisperers," I feel she hasn't much of a chance in this country, since the film has played few areas.

Miss Bancroft's unrelenting Iviciousness in "The, Graduate" and the elder Hepburn's straightforward liberal mother in "Dinner," however, strike this writer as the two to beat. Tracy just might win posthumously because of his great contributions to the in dustry and the nostalgic circumstances surrounding "Dinner's" production. His performance was one of his best. Tracy is not the first, incidentally, to receive a post FOR A 0 NDE EVENING AT BUSINESSMEN'S LUNCHEON FROM 75c 11 A.M. 2:30 P.M.
