prominent in business and church activities died Tuesday at seven at the home of his daughter Mrs: William Evans in Oakland Calif Mr Ballif left Salt Lake about six months to be with his daughter in Oakland He was born September 23 1859 in Ogden a son of Serge and Elise Lacoultr Ballif who came to Utah from Switzerland as converts to the church As a young man he attended the Logan schools and the University of Deseret in Salt Lake City From early manhood he wa3 prominent in church work presiding over the I A in the Logan Fourth ward and later becoming superintendent of the I A organizations of Cache stake Serves Missions He went to Switzerland in 1890 and remained for three years as a missionary for the church On his return he was made a president of the sixty-fourth quorum of seventies In 1904 he went on a foreign mission to i Belgium and from that work was called in 1905 to preside over the Swiss and German mission where he remained until 1909 For a time after -his return to the in north Africa before his capture in Algiers shows Darlan right during an inspection of Algerian defenses with Gen Alphonse Juin chief of the French military in Algeria The picture made about two weeks ago was radioed from London to New York After this particular inspection Darlan returned to Vichy then back to Algeria where he was captured with Juin when American forces staged their north Utah and other areas of the west dependent upon Utah mines are facing a serious coal shortage Acting Governor Monson reported today In a telegram to Governor Herbert Maw now in -Washington Monson stated: "Coal situation in Utah extremely critical Many coal companies now out of coal Many hotels hospitals apartment houses state institutions have only a few days' supply on hand William Mc-Phie vice president District No 22 United Mine Workers insists miners must comply with Lewis' order restricting employment to seven days a week seven hours per day with time and one-half for Saturdays Sundays and holidays Operators Insist "Mine operators insist machinery requires one day per week for overhauling and are holding out for six-day week of nine hours per day with time and one-half for
