1981 Honolulu Star-Bulletin A-9 Friday, January 9, Boat Explosion Injures 1 HONOKOHAU, Hawaii A 19-year-old man was injured seriously yesterday when the 55-foot charter fishing boat Blue Hawaii exploded, burned and sank at the Honokohau small boat harbor north of Kailua- Kona. Kona police are investigating the 3:30 a.m. incident as a case of criminal property damage. Injured was Noble Davis, of Walnut Creek, Calif. He had burns on his head, back and legs, police said, and was listed in satisfactory condition in the special care unit of Kona Hospital this morning.

At the hospital yesterday, Davis told police that he had been using gasoline to clean the engine of the Blue Hawaii in the early morning hours, and then went on deck to smoke a cigarette. An explosion then occurred throwing Davis to the back of the boat, followed by a second explosion which threw him into the harbor water, Davis told police. Davis' mother. Astarte Rice, who was on shore at the time of the incident. drove Davis to Kona hospital after himself from the water, police said.

Neither the son nor the mother was aware that the explosion had caused a fire. they told police. OTHER WITNESSES TOLD police that the boat was engulfed in flames within 20 seconds of the explosion. Kona fire officials said they responded to the fire at 3:36 a.m, that the fire was out at 4:05 and that the boat sank at 6:17. Police said Rice and Davis gave contradictory statements about where they lived.

Davis said that he had been living in a condominium, but Rice told police that they were staying at a hotel. A check at the hotel showed that they were not registered there. The mother also told, police that she would not leave the Island until her son's condition improved, but left for the Mainland yesterday. Another boat owner who asked not to be identified said it is unusual to use gasoline clean an engine. Police said soap and water is usually sufficient.

Whether or not the boat was insured was not clear, police said. They estimated the loss at $150,000. The Blue Hawaii had been the focus of a legal dispute in the past. In October 1974, actor Lee Marvin was Rope Nelson, who captained and used the boat in a charter operation. Nelson claimed that Marvin reneged on an oral agreement to give Nelson full ownership of the after the actor had used it as a tax write-off.

In November 1974, Marvin filed a countersuit for possession vessel and for an unpaid loan he made to Nelson. In 1976, a Circuit Court jury awarded Marvin 70 percent ownership of the boat and $3,500 in damages from Nelson. Nelson was allowed to retain 30 percent owership, which Marvin admitted giving him as a gift. Nelson also received back pay owed to him by Marvin for running the charter. Nelson later bought full ownership of the boat.

The boat also was recently the subject of litigation between Nelson and Astarte Rice and her husband James, police said, with the Rices being awarded ownership of the Blue Hawaii. Three other boats, the Waimanu, the Billfisher II and the Wild West also were damaged in yesterday's explosions, police said. Bank Robbery Suspect Amador Tugadi, 22, of the Central YMCA, was to be arraigned in District Court today after he was charged yesterday with the attempted robbery of the American Security Bank branch at 1001 Bishop St. Tuesday. Tugadi also was charged with earlier robberies of the First Hawaiian Bank at 161 S.

King St. and Central Pacific Bank's Waikiki branch at 2424 Kalakaua Ave. His total bail was set at $30,000. In another case. a second Central YMCA resident was arrested there Wednesday for investigation of Tuesday's robbery of the American Security Bank branch at 1314 S.
