HONOKOHAU. Hawaii A 19-year-old man was injured seriously yesterday when the 55-foot charter fishing boat Blue Hawaii exploded, burned and sank at the Honokohau small boat harbor. north of Kailua-Kona. 1 Kona police are investigating the 3:30 a.m incident as a case of criminal property damage. Injured was Noble Davis, of Walnut Creek, Calif.

He had burns on his head, back and legs, police said, and was listed in satisfactory condition in the special care unit of Kona Hospital this morning. At the hospital yesterday, Davis told police that he had been using gasoline to clean the engine of the Blue Hawaii in the early morning hours, and then went on deck to smoke a cigarette. An explosion then occurred throwing Davis to the back of the boat, followed by a second'explosion which threw him into the harbor Davis told police. Davis' mother, Astarte Rice, who was on shore at the time of the incident, drove Davis to Kona hospital after Davis pulled himself from the water, police said. Neither the son nor the mother was aware that the explosion had caused a fire, they told police.

OMER WITNESSES TOLD police that the boat was engulfed in flames within 20 seconds of the explosion. Kona fire officials said they responded to the fire at 3:36 a.m. that the fire was out at 4:05 and that the boat sank at 6:17. Police said Rice and Davis'gave 'contradictory' statements about where they lived. Davis said that he had been living in a condominium, but Rice told police that they were staying at a hotel.

A check at the hotel showed that they were not registered there. The mother also told police that she would not leave the Island until her son's condition improved. but left for the Mainland Another boat owner who asked not to be identiT fled said it is unusual to use gasoline to clean an engine.
