Thursday, April 3, 1980 Honolulu Star A-13 Defendant, 2 Friends Tried to Con Call Girl, Jury Told Alfred Canines and two friends visited the apartment of slain call girl Sonja Lysiuk about a week before she was killed to "try to con her into giving it (sex) for nothing, one of the friends testified yesterday in Circuit Court. The man, Frank Paishon, also testified that within a month or so of Lysiuk's death, Canianes had a rifle in a briefcase in his car. Earlier testimony in the trial identified Canianes as entering Lysiuk's apartment building carrying a briefcase within hours of her death. By Pat Guy Star-Bulletin Writer Canianes, 46, is on trial for the Oct. 13, 1978 murder of Lysiuk, who worked as a call girl under the name Lisa Colt.

She was found strangled with a telephone cord and twine in her Amana Street apartment. Testimony in the trial which began Monday has described Canianes as the man who was to be Lysiuk's "last trick" for the night. PAISHON SAID he. Canianes and another man went Lysiuk's apartment after Canines told them he had the name of a prostitute and Paishon said he had no money for one. Paishon said.

Lysiuk offered the men a drink and "gave us a list of prices," but said no one had sex with her that night. He said he had seen the briefcase a few times before that visit to Lysiuk and had seen the disassembled rifle once. said Canianes wanted to sell it. Also testifying yesterday was Dr. Alvin Majoska, City medical examiner, who performed an autopsy on Lysiuk.

He confirmed that she had died of strangulation and said that a blunt force had been applied to her mouth and caused her lips to swell. She also had received five blows to the had numerous bruises and scrapes on her face and hands. The trial got off to a late start yesterday. Circuit Judge Wendell Huddy wanted to question a juror who apparently had heard something about the case. DEFENSE ATTORNEY Myles Yamamoto objected when Huddy allowed a Star-Bulletin reporter into his chambers for the session, which was on the record and which Huddy had said would normally be in court.

When the reporter protested Yamamoto's request for closure, Huddy called a recess to allow an attorney to argue why the hearing should be open. Attorney John Rapp, representing the Star-Bulletin, said Yamamoto had made no showing that questioning the juror in open court would be prejudicial to his client and said the public had a right to attend trial proceedings. Deputy City Prosecutor Mike McGuigan also said he preferred have the trial remain as open as practically feasible." Huddy denied the defense motion to close the proceedings, saying he did not think the defendant's right to a fair trial would be affected long as the information which the court receives is not conveyed to the other jurors." HUDDY ALSO NOTED that jurors usually "diligently follow" his instructions to avoid publicity or discussion of a case. Huddy also said questioning, the juror in public would educational process to inform the public that it should refrain from approaching jurors about a case. CX2600 17995 COMBAT ATARI' Reg.
