-C FORT LAUDERDALE NEWS, Jan. 9, (AP Wirephoto) JACKIE CHATS WITH ANDRE MALRAUX as Mona Lisa made debut last night in capital Everything Goes Wrong Mona Lisa Almost Smirks At Debut WASHINGTON. (UPI) Two; thousand enthusiastic dignitaries gathered to behold the Mona Lisa last night, and in the hubbub which ensued the famous lady's smile might almost have been a smirk. The microphones went dead, forcing President Kennedy to shout his barbed witticisms; the elevator failed, forcing him and his family to walk, and glaring glass obscured the painting. Most of the elegantly clad congressmen, cabinet members and diplomats who attended the American debut of Da Vinci's masterpiece- by i invitation only- How Many Mona Lisas Are There? By MILES A.

SMITH (Associated Press Arts Editor) NEW YORK. Is there more than one Mona Lisa? The question has been raised rather frequently over the years, as several paintings of this subject have turned up in Europe and the United States. The Louvre painting is recognized by all the major art experts and reference books as an authentic original by Da Vinci himself. Yet the owners of several other Mona Lisas are quite sincere in their belief they have an equally authentic work from the hand of the master. A London art dealer, Dr.

Henry Pulitzer, notified the Arizona Republic, in Phoenix, that next Saturday he would place on display in Phoenix a Mona Lisa which he believes is authentic. Known as the Isleworth Mona Lisa, it has been in a London vault since the dealer found it in an English home. A storage vault in the New York area contains a painting which has come to be known as the "Vernon Mona after the name of the family which has had it in America for more than a century and a half. neither saw the painting nor heard what was said about it. They missed a great deal.

The officials on the platforms by the painting didn't miss too much, though. When the restive art lovers began whispering among themselves, Secretary of State Dean Rusk rose by the painting to announce apologetically that "the acoustis in the room are so good the private remarks made in the rear are amplified in the But the acoustics apparently worked one way only. With the microphones dead, French Minister of Culture Andre Malraux's poetic tribute to the Mona Lisa was altogether lost. Mr. Kennedy fared somewhat better.

Resorting to a shouting campaign style of oratory, he heaped praise on the painting and on France, and remarked that the Mona Lisa was the "second lady" the people of France had sent to the United States, although she would not stay as long as the first--the Statue of Liberty. Then he turned to some veiled barbs on France's desire to become an independent nuclear power. "We in the United States are grateful for this loan from the leading artistic power in the world, I France" he said. "In view of the recent meeting at Nassau, I must note further that this painting has been kept under careful French control, and that France has even sent along its own commander-inchief--M. Malraux.

"And I want to make it clear that grateful as we are for this painting, we will continue to press ahead with the effort to develop an independent artistic force and power of our The doors of the National Gallery opened to ordinary folk today. In the next four weeks it is expected that perhaps a million people will view the masterpiece. The painting will then be taken to New York for a special exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
