Observance to stress soil stewardship Soil Stewardship Week, a nationwide observance emphasizing man's responsibility to conserve natural resources, will be held in Lincoln County this week, Frank Magnus, chairman of the county Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) board, announced. This year's theme, "A Different Place," will emphasize how changes in the nation affect citizens' responsibility to be good stewards of the land, Magnus said.

He cited the energy shortage, environmental pollution and the growing concern over land use as examples of changes affecting natural resources. Several area churches in both Tomahawk and Merrill are participating in special soil stewardship observances. The conservation board provided local churches with programs, bulletin inserts and copies of this year's observance booklet. "We hope that during Soil Stewardship Week, millions of Americans will pause for a moment to consider their responsibilities for the protection and use of the Lord's earth," Magnus said. This year marks the 19th consecutive year that the county's SWCD, along with about 3,000 similar districts in the U.S., has sponsored a soil stewardship week.
