A year ago, we used actual and projected figures from the renewal application stations filed with the Federal Communications Commission.

This time, we checked with the stations for updated information on actual figures. In a year's time, a lot of changes have occurred: EIGHT GENERAL MANAGERS have been replaced, par for the course of Hawaii's "mobile" or "fluid" radio management situation. Broadcasting hours have been expanded. Instead of last year's nine stations being on the air 24 hours a day (168 hours a week), the count now is up to 12, with the addition of KORL, KGU and KUMUFM to "full-timers." A single change, IGIVH adding 30 hours to its full-time news format, upped the total number of news hours significantly. Commercials, according to the stations themselves, stayed fairly well the same.

THE NUMBER of employes dropped somewhat, especially at KORL from 28 to 18 as the station changed from live talk format to recorded music), at ICHVH, which picked up full-time Mainland network service, and at which reduced the number of part-time employes. The large number of employes at KOHO and KZ00, by the way, includes minimum-wage part-time personnel. There have been a number of ownership chnages: Heftel Broadcasting (KGMB) sold its former FM outlet (KGMQ) to Richard McKee, and the station is now known as KQMQ. KGU is going from Copley to Sacramento-Hawaii, and KCCN switched from reporting the total assets of Grayson Enterprises to individual listing. K-108, off the air for a long while, is back now, operated by the Da Kine Hawaiian Radio, Inc.

THE BEWILDERING VARIETY of program formats (we used the description favored by the individual stations) masks a rather uniform sameness. "Middle of the road," "Contemporary," "Uptempo" and even "Beautiful music" in fact all mean the same pop music, ranging (if that phrase can be used meaningfully) from Golden Oldies to popified mellow rock. In this category of what I believe to be radio's "musical vast wasteland" is KGMB, KOHL, KKUA, KGU, KIKI, K-108, KLEI, KUMU AM and FM, KPOI, KQMQ and KHSS an astonishing total of 12 stations broadcasting basically the same stuff. RECENT VICTIMS of the spreading sameness are K-POI, going from rock to "beautiful music" and KORL, going into automated music from live and lively talk shows. However widely quality may vary at the other stations, at least they offer something different from "music to lull you to sleep:" Classical music (and religion) on KAIM, all-news on ICHVH, ethnic and foreign-language programs on KOHO, KZ00 and KISA, talk, education, religion and community service on KNDI, Hawaiian music on KCCN, and Aku's program on KGMB.
