FORT LAUDERDALE NEWS. Dec. 3, 1962 5D Exports Decline In Florida South's Foreign Trade Increases Southern customs districts handled 7 per cent more products in two-way world trading in the first eight months of 1962 than they did in the same period last year. Emphasis continued on an expansion of import business rather than exports, the area field office of the U.S. Department of Commerce reported.

All told, nearly $6.4 million worth of commodities passed through customs facilities in Maryland, Virginia, the Carolinas, Georgia, Florida, Mobile, New Orleans, Sabine, Galveston, Laredo, El Paso, Kentucky and Tennessee from January through August of this year, with nine of the 14 districts in the region experiencing gains in total trading over last year. But, all of the overall regional increase was centered in imports, which rose by 18 per cent. or from $1,823.9 million to $2.145.5 million, while exports were declining by 1 per cent, from $4,256.8 million to $4,225.4 million, the Commerce Department said. In total trading Florida advanced 3 per cent or $441.2 million to $453.6 million. Exports however, declined 6 per cent, from $271.6 million to $255.3 million.

Imports went up 7 per cent, running $169.6 million in the same period last year with this year's mark reaching $198.3 million. Federated Gains Federated Department Stores, re reports its third quarter profits this year were $8,956,329 compared with $8,238,106 in the same period of 1961. The store chain said its sales for the quarter totaled 986, up from $201,355,862 in the same time last year. 1 Federated's earnings per share for the quarter came to $1.19, against $1.13 per share a year ago. NEW YORK.

(P) Houdaille Industries, declared a regular quarterly dividend of 25 cents a common share, plus an extra year-end dividend of 10 cents, both payable Dec. 31 to owners of record Dec. 7. Recent Events Didn't Halt Florida Sales Conference National Biscuit Co. was to begin its annual sales conference today at the Hollywood Beach Hotel.

Upwards of 600 Nabisco sales and production executives from across the country will attend the conference, which continues through Wednesday. This is the first time Nabisco has held its yearly sales meeting in Florida, and President Lee S. Bickmore said his company pleased to be here." began planning the theme of our meeting over a year ago and once we decided on Florida, we never considered any change despite recent events," he said. As another first, Nabisco is holding a formal meeting of its Board of Directors in Hollywood, marking the first time the Board has even convened during a sales meeting. The conference, which will plan Nabisco's sales, marketing and advertising programs for the coming year, will be headed by Nile E.

Cave, senior vice president of 1 the biscuit division. Bickmore will be a featured speaker. Today's Viewpoint- NEW YORK. (P New York City printers have voted to authorize a strike against any or all of nine major newspapers at any time after midnight Friday when the current joint contract expires. Both sides, however, say they hope by intensive bargaining to avoid a strike.

The printers' strike authorization vote was announced as 2,003 to 47. The vote was by secret ballot yesterday at a closed meeting of New York Typographical Union No. 6. All 11,000 members of the local, including 3,000 employed on the newspapers involved, were eligible to vote. Negotiations between the union and the Publishers Association were resumed today.

EDITOR'S NOTE: A strike might mean the closing for good of one, or more of New York's newspapers. This situation would not affect the bosses, only those who would he out of jobs. Eleven thousand were eligible to vote, but only 2,050 cast ballots. Something haywire there in this land of democracy? Appliance Sales Take Late Spurt NEW YORK. (-Contrary to seasonal trends, the forecast of economists and the expectations of dealers, appliance sales are booming, the Wall Street Journal reports. It said a surprising spurt in late season sales, the time when consumer interest in appliances usually drops, may make this one of the best years recently for the industry. always thought 1962 would be a good year, but I'm a little astonished that we're doing this well," said John Jensen, general manager of Gerhards, an appliance dealer of Glenside, Pa. Similar reports came in from elsewhere around the country, The Journal said.

The survey showed retail appliance sales refrigerators, ranges, washers, running between 5 per cent and 20 per cent ahead of a year ago, with the average up about 10 per cent. "If these gains continue, as most sellers now think they will, full-year volume could be the industry's best since record article said. Given credit for the surge was renewed confidence on the part of consumers. Cheerful economic news in recent weeks has given shoppers confidence they will hold the jobs necessary to pay for appliances on time, the article said. "Folks never were convinced that a recession was coming, and by now they don't believe it at all," was the way Sol Polk, a Chicago appliance dealer, put it.

Many Local Firms Take Part In Marketing New Ball Game The old adage "Build a better mousetrap" is a misnomer for at least one facet of our business world. The children's game field! Back in 1956, The Wall Street Journal reported one of the leading game manufacturers had received 48,000 game ideas from hopeful inventors about the country. They contracted to use four of them, placing the possibility of acceptance at 12,000 to 1. These odds have been sliced to 1 in 6000, wherein A. F.

Blake, six-year resident of Ft. Lauderdale, is concerned. In '56 Blake developed an arithmetic game called "Thirteen" which was popularized through Life, Look and The American Mercury Magazine plus editorial praise in The New York Sunday News. Subsequently it was approved by a subsidiary of the National Education Association for supplemental use in the nations classrooms. Soon after, Cadaco-Ellis Chicago game producers added it to their line of 32 games, including Walter Lantz's "Woodie Woodpecker" and Marlin Perkin's "Zoo Parade," old TV favorites of that year.

Blake was pleasantly reminded of the aforementioned odds this past week while introducing his latest brainchild, 'Living Room at a newly-opened department store. Happening to pay a visit crosstown 1 to another store he came upon an imposing display of his old game "Thirteen" being offered to the local market. Now the odds are 180,000,000 to 1 that Blake is the sole individual in America who can point to two game offerings on the market at the same time as being his own creation. His "Living Room Baseball," designed for use by baseball player card fans, is made locally by Morfun Inc. and will move to the national scene after market tests here are completed.

A startling sidelight to all this brings into vivid focus the effect just one $1.98 item can have on the economy of a community as witness the firms involved in production and distribution of 'Living Room Broward Wholesale distribution locally; Hy Mallinger N. New car sales in the middle third of November were 22 per cent ahead of year earlier figures and a record for the period, Steel noted. he took a look at Intourist, the Soviet tourist agency. "There is tremendous enthusiasm over there for travel to Florida," said Jarrard, who noted that it cost a Copenhagen citizen about the same amount of money for a winter vacation in Florida as would for him to go to the normal vacation spots on the French Riveria. "There is a big market in Scandinavia," Jarrard said. "The people there make good money and are.

interested in Florida." He said while he was there, the newspapers were full Florida scenes. ADDRESSING MAILING SPECIALIST Get your Christmas advertising addressed and mailed before rush.
