Helen Gahagan Douglas NEW YORK (AP) Helen Gabagan Douglas, whose defeat for California senatorial seat 30 years ago put Richard M. Nixon on the road to the White House, died of cancer early today at age 79. Nan Stevens, secretary for Mrs.

Douglas and her husband, actor Melvyn Douglas, said Mrs. Douglas died at early today at a local hospital. Her husband and daughter, Mary Helen, were at her side, and her son, Peter, visited yesterday. Stevens said Mrs. Douglas discovered that she had cancer about seven years ago, and had surgery at that time.

The cancer recurred three years ago, and she entered the hospital a week ago, Stevens said. She said Mrs. Douglas would be cremated, and memorial service would be held at a later date. A STAGE STAR and international concert singer, Mrs. Douglas used her maiden name professionally.

She had served three terms as a Democrat in the House when she decided to run for the Senate in 1950. Nixon, who had served with her in the House, ran as a Republican against her and won. Their campaign was bitter and gained national interest with Nixon charging his opponent, known "glamor girl" of the House, had strong leftwing tendencies which would injure the nation. He made an issue of her liberal New Deal philosophy, reflected in her ardent early support for President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

She countered that Nixon was "witch hunting" in his activities with the House Committee on UnAmerican Activities. The acerbic tone of Nixon's campaign was long held against him by embittered supporters of Mrs. Douglas. He was elected president 18 years later.
