2C FORT LAUDERDALE XEWS, Dec. 9, 1963 They're On The Road To Success1 flfrmimJH, UDICTUS II -ma. itmi By MARYLYN SPRINGER (News Staff Writer) In show business you just CAN'T succeed without really trying. "It takes hard work, aggressiveness, stubbornness, blind faith, and perseverance," insists Hal England, road company star of "How To Succeed In Business Without Really 'Pnt perseverance down three or four times," chimed in Fred Bennett, who plays top executive Gatch in the "Even if yon audition for 10,000 shows, the odds are against you." Interviewed over lunch at the Sea Horse Restaurant the duo agreed that working on the road is far more grueling than doing a play on Broadway. Says England, "I miss New York, and my friends, and my analyst.

On the road the cast is like a whole little community, but living in hotel rooms and moving every week or two is hard work." Grabbing bites of banana chantilly pie between words, England related HIS road to success. "I was born in King's Mountain, N.C. you never heard of it, did you and went to high school there. I think I always wanted to be an actor, but we never knew about the theater in King's Mountain. All we had were movies.

So I took pre-law courses at the University of North Carolina and did some acting there. Then I auditioned in New York for Stalag 17. They needed someone for the role of a Southern boy and after I read two lines in my North Carolina accent, everyone was laughing so hard I got the part. It worked like a gimmick. After that though I read aloud from a handbook to try and get rid of the accent.

"I worked in California for awhile and got a soap opera v. i- k-. Xt2tX television contract when I was 20. Then I understudied my present part in New York for six months." Fred Bennett, who plays the role of office wolf only in the play, not in real life was born in Jacksonville and attended Juilliard School of Music. He calls himself "either an actor who sings or a singer who acts." "I like working in New York better too," he claims, "because you can live in an apartment and you just feel more like a human being.

One bad thing about it, though, is when you're acting in New York, you don't get to see any of the good plays, and when you're not acting you don't have the money. All I ever saw were flop plays because they give passes to those." The hardest part about working on road shows, they agree, is adjusting to a whole new show every week. The backstage is different, the orchestra's different, the acoustics are different, and even the audience is different," says England. "Some audiences are reserved, some more enthusiastic. For instance, Miami audiences are so blase and sophisticated they seem to be saying: 'Prove to us you're Audiences even laugh at different things which really keeps you on your toes.

You just neverk now when the laughs will come." Gulping down a hamburger, Bennett broke in with, "And, on the road you don't get to see much of the town. Just the inside of the theater and the train station." "I'd like to go out at night and hit the high spots," laments England, "but I have to get my sleep to be ready for the next show. I have a big responsibility and I take it seriously. I have to." After Saturday's performance at the Dade County Auditorium in Miami, the troop left for New Orleans, Pittsburgh, Kansas City, Portland, Seattle and a host of other cities. The road show of the three-year standing-room-only Broadway hit is booked solid for "almost the next two years." "You know I just can't wait to get to the show every night," said England.

"The cast's all so excited about it that they just project their excitement to the audience. "Someone asked my why I'm so keyed up all the time. How can I help it? Everything's so wonderful."
