FORT LAUDERDALE XEWS. FriJay, Nov. 15. 1963 15A I I Rush Button Phone Service Started Pioneer Attack Lacks Strength The two Pennsylvania cities were chosen for introduction of the service because the area was one of two where push buttons underwent extensive market trials beginning in 1960. The other area was Findlay, Ohio.

An spokesman said that the service will be extended to a number of other, unidentified states within a short time. Western Electric, the Bell System manufacturing arm, has planned to turn out 40,000 to 45,000 touch tone phones three rows of three buttons and the tenth, operator button, centered underneath. The subscribers' area code and own number will appear on a horizontal plaque below all the buttons. Each button carries both number and letter designations identical to those on the conventional dial. The main advantage of the new system is speed, ease and convenience of operations.

The company estimated that a seven-digit number takes an average of 10 seconds to dial. The same number can be tapped out on buttons in 2 to 5 seconds. When a button is tapped two simultaneous musical tones are generated and flashed to the central office. The tones can be heard on the receiver and are similar to those heard when making some long distance calls. The tones differ from the pulses sent out by today's dial.

The Associated Press NEW YORK The American Telephone and Telegraph Co. will begin offering push button telephones to customers Monday as a regular service. Only residents of Carnegie and Greensburg in western Pennsylvania will be offered the service at first. They will pay an extra charge of $5 for installation of the new telephone and $1.50 a month for each line into the house. Push button telephoning, officially known as touch tone dialing, has been called the biggest change in telephones since the 1920s when conversion to the customary dial began.

said that the new service is expected to be generally available throughout the Bell System in 10 years or so. Gradual introduction of push button telephones is necessary because extensive modifications of central office equipment must be made beforehand. by the end of the year. The company has estimated the number produced by 1967 may be as high as 1.5 million. The new telephones will come in all standard models and in a full range of colors.

The wall instrument, however, has been redesigned and is more compact than the current wall 'Lot Of Building the Gadsden office, with 60 employes, was at stake, as he claimed the office would ba moved from there to Dallas. John P. Walker, vice president and administration counsel for American, said in a recent interview here that the regional office of Pioneer would be maintained in Ft. Lauderdale if the merger is concluded. He also hinted that a new building here might be considered.

Under the arrangement for the merger four Pioneer officers and directors would serve on the board of American, including R. H. Gore chairman of the board of Pioneer; Claude M. Elrod, president of Pioneer and A. C.

Michaels and W. Bew White, Pioneer board members. FEWER, 87. DIES SLIDELL, La. Charles E.

Fenner, one of the cofounders of the brokerage firm which later became Merrill, Lynch, Pierce, Fenner and Smith, died unexpectedly at his country home here. Fenner, a noted New Orleans and business leader for decades, was 87. Official sources said Friday there is not enough opposition to defeat a plan to block the merger of the Pioneer Home Owners Life Insurance of Gadsden, and Ft. Lauderdale, and the American Life Insurance of Alabama. Mitchel Lewis, Gadsden, a regional manager for Pioneer Home Owners Life Insurance had been named chairman of a group of stockholders in Alabama opposing the merger plan of Pioneer and the American Life Insurance of Birmingham and Dallas, Texas.

Directors of both Pioneer and American have voted unanimously for the merger that would result in consolidation with several companies controlled by Troy V. Post of Dallas, through the Great-America Corp. Stockholders of both companies will vote on the action of their boards with the stock arrangement being on a basis of two and one-half shares of Pioneer for one share of American. Lewis, quoted in the Gadsden (Ala.) Times, said that New Plant Started Gain In Plastic Pipe Lines Seen Europe Seen On Upgrade model. The new telephone will have 10 push buttons arranged in Todmfs Viewpoint WASHINGTON Unemployment can reflect the desire to work but inability to find a job.

It can also reflect the ability to work but lack of great desire for a job. Present employment surveys by the Department of Labor don't show the difference. The average unemployment rate is 4.8 per cent. That Is for all the jobless. Teen-aged boys have a 13.1 per cent rate; teen-aged girls 12.7 per cent.

Married women have a 6.4 per cent rate. Single men over 20 have an 8.8 per cent rate. It is possible that some teen-agers, though seeking work, show no great desire for it because they are living at home with their parents. It is possible that some married women are very choosy about the type of work they will accept so long as their husbands are supporting them. These surmises are suggested by the fact that among the group clearly with the greatest incentive to work, married men not separated from their wives, the unemployment rate is 2.3 per cent, less than half the average.

Actual rate. (Seasonal rate is 5.6 per cent.) From the Chamber of Commerce of the United States acceptance of plastic pipe for plumbing uses in commercial and residential construction is inevitable. He said plastic pipe also is gradually extending into other industries like food processing, industrial chemicals, electrical and fuel distribution. The Plastex president spoke at the ceremonies for the firm's 50,000 square foot extrusion plant scheduled to open early in 1964. When operative, the plant will double the capacity for irrigation and construction pipe over the present leased facility in Pompano Beach.

71 The Golden Decade for plastic pipe will begin in 1970 and during it sales will surpass $1 billion annually, a leading producer of the product predicted at Pompano Beach Thursday at the ground breaking of a new extrusion plant. Richard S. Zimmerman, president of the Plastex Co. at Pompano and at Columbus, Ohio, and a pioneer plastic pipe producer, said technological developments and local building code approval of plastic pipe will spark the growth." By 1970. the industry's output of pipe will reach $250, 000,000 four times today's total, he said.

While 60 per cent of America's current water supply comes from underground sources, he said, in 15 years it will be 85 per cent and he predicted plastic pipe will be a significant factor in this expansion. Zimmerman also said rapid We have been exposing the phoney methods the government has been using in reaching its figures on "unemployed." Add this to your collection'.
