In expiation of his sin, Hein did 15 years' hard labor in the National Football League against predators named Mike Michalske, Bronko Nagurski, Bulldog Turner, Turk Edwards and Danny Fortmann. It would have reduced an ordinary human to a grease spot, but the worst Hein got out of the experience was a broken nose, and that was on Pearl Harbor Day in 1941 at the end' of his 11th professional season. Two weeks later, in the only concession to human frailty he ever made, he wore a nose guard while he helped the New York Giants lose the world championship game to the Chicago Bears, 37-9. Great with the grace of his 65 years, Mel Hein retires on May 31 as supervisor of officials in the American Conference of the NFL.

Officially, this dissolves a 50-year marriage to the game of football, but don't bet that the divorce is final. In a town lilce New York, where the best has been taken for granted ever since Peter Minuit got taken by the Indians, it would be foolish to single out a span of years as the golden age of anything. Still, it is unlikely that sports fans in the city ever had it better than in the decade and a half when Melvin John Hein and Melvin Thomas Ott were household names. Matter of fact, it is hard to remember when there wasn't at least one guy named Melvin on the metropolitan scene; after Hein and Ott, Mel Allen held the fort until the arrival of Melvin Leon Stottlemyre. The difference between Hein and the other Melvins is one of degree.

All the others, the home-run hitter, the broadcaster and the pitcher, ranked among the finest in their fields; Mel Hein was the one best in his, the greatest center who ever played pro football. "The No 1 Giant in the team's 50 years," said the Giants' Wellington Mara. The Purloined Letter The statute of limitations having expired, it is per-missable to recall what a near thing it was for Hein to get to New York in the first place. It was February, 1931. He had finished his last season as All-America center for Washington State and was working off his impatience on the basketball court while he awaited offers from professional football.

The Providence Steamrollers and Portsmouth Spartans were making passes at him there was no draft then to give one team exclusive rights to negotiate with a college player but Mel was hoping to play with the Giants, some of whom he had met when Washington State went East to play Villanova. Trouble was, he was broke and in love and time was running out. When he felt he could wait no longer, he signed a contract with Providence for $125 a game and mailed it to Jimmy Conzelman, coach of the Steamrollers. The very next day the Giants offered $150 a game. In desperation, Mel appealed to the postmaster in Pullman, Wash.

The seat of Washington State is bigger than Snohomish but smaller than Yakima, and the postmaster knew this big, earnest kid well and warmly. The contract was already in the mail, he said, but he would wire the postmaster in Providence, R.I., and see whether anything could be done. It was irregular, improper and probably illegal, but the postmaster in Providence found an envelope with a Pullman postmark addressed to Jimmy Conzelman, lifted it, and got it back to the sender unopened. Mel signed with the Giants, got married, and arrived in New York with one wife and a personal fortune of $14. In the second game of the 1931 season he became the Giants' regular center.

By 1933 he was the all-league center, a distinction that was conferred upon, him eight times. He has been enshrined in both the college and professional halls of fame, having been included in the first group of pros beatified in 1963. leaping His Rewards By 1938, when he was saluted as the most valuable player in the National Football League, he was earning $275 a game for a 12-game season. To save Larry Csonka, Jim Kiick and Paul Warfield the trouble of multiplying, this comes out to $3,300. As MVP, he was paid to endorse two commercial products, a donut and a beverage.

Each paid him $250 and one gave him a set of pipes, without tobacco. His loot from seven games for the league champion-ship just topped $3,000, which is one-fifth of Garo Yepremian's take from one championship game today. The only time Mel made it big was in the war years of 1943-1945 when he was football coach and athletic director at Union College in Schenectady, N.Y., from Monday through Friday, then caught a train to New York to work out with the Giants on Saturday, play on Sunday and catch a train for Schenectady that night. Two paychecks. He helped coach the Los Angeles Dons and New York Yankees of the All-America Conference, the Los Angeles Rams of the NFL and the University of Southern California.

When AI Davis hired him as boss of the American Football League officials before the merger with the he completed the circuit of all professional leagues. When the kid from Washington State moved into the line-up with people named Benny Friedman, Red Cagle and Ray Flaherty he assumed he would be there forever. Fifteen years later, when he was still center on offense and linebacker on defense week in and week out, Giant fans assumed he had been. His bosses, however, felt he was growing old. "Mel," they fold him at the start of one season, "we'll be able to give you some rest this year.

We've got Chet Glad-chuck from Boston College and Lou DeFilippo of Fordham, the best college centers in the country." "So," Me! says today, "they used Gladchuck at tackle and Defilippo at guard," No. 4311, 01, 31, 52, 27 I High Voltage means straight-through-the-partition cell connectors deliver more initial starting power than an otherwise identical battery with up-and-over cell connectors.
