advanced flying school at Yuma Ariz it 'was reported today He is now stationed with the army air force at Victorville Calif as a bombing approach pilot His wife the former June Bramwell is with him Lieut James Lieutenant James attended Ogden high school and also graduated from Weber college Prior to his enlistment he was employed in the payroll department at Hill field EVENTS LISTED BY MOVIE CLUB YOUTHS TO SIGN FOR FARM WORK Labor Offices Will Enlist High School Pupils For Season's Duty nssmsnmmina Registration of Utah high school youths between the aged of 14 and 18 will be undertaken during the next few days to provide a reservoir of potential farm workers Theodore Maughan associate state director of the employment service and Charles Skidmore state superintendent of public instruction outlined plans for the program at a meeting Monday in Salt Lake City They will explain details to district employment service managers and to district school boards The registration cards meeting of students faV ulty members and parents con- -ducted Monday night ln Ogden high school by the P-T A president Mrs James Harbertson and Principal Ray Bjork the problem oL student social clubs was discussed The main objections brought out included the effect of an extensive social program on scholastic records and also that the social clubs tend to encourage spending of an unwarranted amount of money Students joined in the discussiotf" which proceeded at a businessMc pace and advocated holding another meeting to which all parents would he urged to come All sides agreed that a valuable understanding had been reached Representative members of the student body the faculty' parents and the school board were chosen to form a committee which will present' a resolution to the board concerning student social organizations i The need for social activity was recognized and students acknovrj ledged that some adult supervisioY-1 would undoubtedly prove of benefit to the clubs With that in mind it was proposed to take the clubs into the school arranging a program which would afford student social activities congenial to all and at the same time not interfere with studies commander of Herman Baker post of the American Legion that National Commander Roane Waring will pay Ogden a visit on Monday May 31 Commander Waring has just finished a 30000 mile tour around the world visiting war industrial plants army navy training camps and proving grounds in the United States and Europe and has only recently returned from the battle fronts of Africa His is an intimate first hand knowledge of what is going on and why The local Legion contemplates a program whereas the citizens of Ogden and vicinity will have an opportunity to see and hear the national commander If plans the Central building of Weber college The forest fire fighters service training classes are held under instruction of Ranger Clark Anderson who will offer special instruction to those persons unable air express pound miles flown in April this year as compared with the same month in 1942 and a 95 per cent increase ih air mail pound miles flown in the month as against last year -According to Graddick director of air cargo department the company flew an estimated 681052000 express pound miles in April as compared with 486240258 flown In April 1942 An arrest on a speeding charge resulted in apprehension of an escapee from the Oklahoma state reformatory at Granite Okla Jay Newman federal bureau of investigation agent in charge of the Salt Lake City office said today He named the man as Leland Ray Cloud Jr 20 of Bremerton Wash Cloud was arrested by Utah state highway patrolmen Sunday Newman said was fined $50 by a Farmington justice of the peace and unable to pay was lodged in Weber county jail Ogden It was determined Newman said that the automobile Cloud drove was stolen from Portland Ore and the case thus was turned over to the FBI Federal charges of automobile theft were filed against Cloud and a companion Eugene Arthur Dantchis 25 of San Diego Calif Two women companions were held without charge Newman said FBI records Newman said showed that Cloud escaped from the Oklahoma reformatory last March 14 after having served two years of a 10-year sentence for robbery Lloyd Mathes Becomes Colonel Promotion to lieutenant colonel of Major Floyd Mathes ordnance supply officer at the Utah quartermaster depot was announced today by Brigadier General Ralph Talbot Jr commanding general Colonel Mathes came to this depot as a captain in June' 1942 for the purpose of organizing a motor transport section He is a graduate of Kansas State college and received his degree from the Detroit Institution of Technology and associate school of the University of Michigan In civilian life Colonel Mathes had been employed with the engineering staff of the Western Electric Co of Chicago Stude-baker Motor Co Detroit Chrysler Motor Co and at the time he entered the army was an instructor of tool and die designs at the Wilbur Wright Technical school in Detroit as 3 Companion's Body Will Be Sent to Texas For Services Reports from Bushnell general hospital in Brigham City today indicated that two soldiers' were recovering satisfactorily from in juries received in an accident Sun day night Which claimed the life of their companion Harold A Phil lips 22 a soldier guard at the Ogden internment camp The two William Hopkins 22 and Falton Miller 20 each suffered a fractured leg and severe bruises and lacerations when the motorcycle they were riding crashed into the' side of a taxicab at the intersection of Twelfth and Wall at eleven-fifty-five Sunday night The motorcycle was being driven by Phillips who apparently was killed instantly Meanwhile Ogden police officers had virtually closed their investigation of the accident today although Capt Lynch of the Utah quartermaster depot detailed to investigate for the army continued an inquiry No Witnesses Traffic Lieut Darrell Shaw said no witnesses to the actual crash had been located Two persons listed Monday at witnesses it was learned were not at the scene of the accident One was a motorist who had passed the motorcycle southbound shortly before the accident and declared the machine was being operated in an erratic manner and had dim headlights The other was a person living on Twelfth who heard the impact but did not see it Police Captain Keeter said army officials issued orders Monday forbidding the use of private motorcycles by soldiers stationed in local The taxicab owned by the Ogden Cab and Transfer Co was operated by William Harris 28 Officers said today no evidence -had been obtained that the cab driver was at fault 1 Stopped at Light The driver reported he stopped for the traffic light then proceeded eastward across the intersection when his cab was struck on the right front corner by the motorcycle The soldiers were thrown free of the motorcycle while the cab continued toward
