Byron Kane Doubles in Actor-Producer Roles Barney, the bartender on the PETER GUNN mystery series (seen Tuesdays at 9 p.m. on Channel 2) doesn't have much to say. "What'll ya have, Pete?" is about it. However, off the screen it's a different story. He speaks with authority and everyone listens.

For Barney is also Byron Kane, associate producer of the series. It's a curious sight on the PETER GUNN set at Universal-International to watch the short, mustached gent in a bartender's apron supervising all the activity and then to see him suddenly slip behind the bar to set 'em up for Pete Gunn. Like many executive members of the series, Kane is an actor, and for years was one of the top 10 performers in radio. He still enjoys kidding the other executives about beating them out for the part of Barney. "The part is a small one," confesses the 35-yearold producer-actor, "But I guess it's the ham in me." As associate producer, Kane supervises all casting, and helps in the editing, dubbing and getting the show on the air.

As Barney the bartender in "Mother's," Gunn's waterfront hangout, he appears in at least four out of five shows. Television's Tate family recently cut a cake -to celebrate the episode of "Search For Tomorrow." From left are Lynn Loring, Mary Stuart and Terry O'Sullivan. The program is seen Monday through Friday at 3 p.m. on Channel 9. Featured Films on Tuesday Allen; Channel 4.

"For the past four years my ambition has been to direct a film show," admits Kane. Up to the moment, Kane is best known for his radio acting.

During the great years of radio- from 1940 to 1954-he was one of the A Latin Visitor When special guest star Jacques Bergerac visits the Peck household to renew an old acquaintance with Mrs. Peck, Torey suspects that her mother has fallen in love with the dashing Frenchman. Among his credits are "The Whistler," "Suspense," "Rocky Jordon," "O'Hara," "Those We Love," "Orson Welles' Mercury Theatre," and "Screen Guild Theatre." Kane stepped right out of high school into radio.

As a youngster, he used to hang around the radio stations in Hollywood. He was a great fan of the stars and knew most of them by sight. When he was 17 years old, Kane was walking in front of CBS-Radio late one night when he saw actress Jane Morgan enter the studio. "I thought it was strange for someone to be entering the station at that hour," recalled Kane, "so I followed her in and found out they were auditioning for a show. "The director turned out to be Norman Corwin, one of radio's foremost writers and directors.

He had seen me hanging around the station before so when I asked him if I could read for a part, he agreed." Kane read and was accepted for the juvenile lead opposite Margaret Sullavan. "In those days," remembers Kane, "every radio show was auditioned. Not once, but sometimes two and three times. It gave everyone a chance to compete." Born in Vermont, and raised in California, Kane is thankful for his radio experience. He still is convinced that the fine radio actors make the best film performers, and cites John McIntyre and Jeanette Nolan as two examples.
