equal or exceed this month their recent record flows was made Saturday by officials of the intermountain forest and range experiment station following measurements which showed 50 to 75 per cent of the snow cover remains on the higher mountain levels The peak according to charts of other comparable years will probably be reached about May 15 it was said Measurements made by Howard Peterson A Croft and Lament Shelby of the experiment station showed 306 inches of snow at Geert-zen creek at an elevation above 8000 feet in Ogden valley and 495 inches on the Davis county watershed The water content at Geert-zen creek is 15 inches and at Davis county 24 inches indicating most of the moisture still remains on the higher levels PAST YEAR PEAKS Tt Is very likely that with normal or above normal temperatures prevailing Ogden and Weber rivers will regain 'their past peaks and there is even' a possibility they may exceed these past peaks because all of the records of previous years comparable to this year show the peaks occurred about May said Croft This conclusion he said is based on the fact that Farmington and Willard creeks whose peak flows are produced by-high' snows comparable to the cover whiqh exists at present on the Ogden and Weber river watersheds have not yet reached their maximum flow This coupled with the fact that 50 to 75 per cent of the snow remains give grounds for believing -the peak is yet to come SAFETY FIRST POLICY course the flow is controlled by temperatures but a safety first policy would seem to demand the assumption that the peak has not passed said Croft we get a high peak again we are going to have reasonably high water from 10 to 14 days or longer on Ogden river The high flow on the Weber river will continue longer than the Ogden high point Mr Peterson said because the water in the Weber has farther to travel from its source Mr Peterson said the measurements showed moist of the snow is gone on levels' below 8000 feet The ground is bare on the Huntsville-Wheeler 'divide snow measuring course situated at an elevation of 5600 feet However the ground is saturated with moisture and is yielding water rather than absorbing it This assures that all runoff from the higher snows will go directly into the rivers WARM DAYS AHEAD Mr Croft said he received word from Cecil Alter government meteorologist in Salt Lake City that all signs indicated the next two or three days will be warmer than at present and that this warm period may continue for 10 days or more Alter discounted the possibility of another cold snap such as checked the flow of the rivers last week Mr CToft said Croft pointed out that a flow of 3000 second feet is sufficient to fill Pine View reservoir every seven days The river has been as high as 3800 second feet WILL REPAIR ROADS Weber county commissioners announced plans are being made to repair roads in the west portion of the county damaged by recent floods In one instance a section of a road was Wasted out to keep water from backing over a large area of farm land Commissioners said approximately 10000 sacks were provided by the county for the building of dikes In addition' lanterns
