'mmm By Judy" Chase Star-Bulletin Writer Whoever said that mature students have difficulty adjusting to college life didn't know Dorry.Wollstein. Twenty-five-plus years after her high school graduation, Mrs. Wollstein made up her mind to get what she always wanted but couldn't afford a formal education. This June 8, at the age of 45, Mrs.

Wollstein will be graduated from the University cf Hawaii with a 3.9-grade point average, the highest in the College of Arts and Sciences. "When I first enrolled at B-l Friday, May 9, 1969 She was drafted, rejected NEW YORK (AP) The San Francisco Warriors picked a girl in the National Basketball Association player draft Wednesday, but couldn't keep her. She is Denise Long, a high school player from Des Moines. Walter Kennedy, NBA president, said, "not allowed." Denise was disappointed. She said she thinks she could play with the pros, and it's "kinda cute" that the Warriors chose her.

"We were serious," said Frank Mieuli, owner and president of the Warriors. "We chose her in the 13th round. "We weren't trying to belittle the draft or the calibre of players available in the late rounds. We didn't intend to use her in NBA games. We wanted to use her in a league we have for preliminary games.

Penny Ann Early, a girl jockey, was signed by Houston of the rival American Basketball citing" to be able to read the New Testament in Greek. "My intention was to be a psychology major," she said, "but, as it turns out, I got caught up in Greek and philosophy courses and only ended up taking two psych courses- "I suppose it is the universality and timelessness of Greek thought that intrigues me. "There is nothing that we think, feel, say or do today; that doesn't relate back to the ancient Greeks. "For instance, I've just finished an undergraduate -thesis in which I endeavored to show that the new morality has its roots in Aristotle's ethics." Mrs. Wollstein said she would like to teach classical Greek at the University level some day, so she is hopeful that she will be able to begin graduate study in her field this fall.

BUT THIS DEPENDS on whether the Classics Department can begin offering a master's degree by that time. If not, Mrs. Wollstein said she will probably continue -working at the Salvation Army Facilities for Children, where she has been assisting in the religious education program and doing private tutoring on a part-time basis while in college. All this in addition to fulfilling her role as a wife. How did she do it all? "Well, it's terribly important that your husband be in full accord with what you're doing, as mine is- "And you have to learn little tricks like carrying a textbook with you everywhere you go." Denise Long, the Warrior's choice, dribbles around a guard in the Iowa girl's basketball tournament in March.

(Approximately 10 per cent of the students enrolled on the Manoa campus full-time this spring are over age 30, according to a University spokesman.) But Mrs. Wollstein said she soon found that "the young people relate just as naturally to mature persons on campus as to other young peo-pie." About having the highest standing in the College of Arts and Sciences, she said: "Of course, I was thrilled. "And my husband (John, a high school teacher) was very, very proud. I saw the expression in his eyes, and I knew he meant it." MRS.

WOLLSTEIN also has the distinction of being the first classical Greek major in the University's history. Mrs. Wollstein originally took Greek to meet the language requirement, because she thought it would be "ex- if pi! 'C5Tf WMMM lliSiSiill Race and age and the rate of divorce TABLE 1. 5. 27 days. Escorted by John C.Q. Lu $1434 Call INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL 533-6011 An Island statistician has investigated the rate of divorce in terms of age differences and race differences between husband and wife. Compiled and written by Robert C.

Schmitt, State statistician of the Hawaii Department of Planning and Economic Development, the. article "Age and Race Differences in Divorce in Hawaii" appeared in the February issue of "Journal of Marriage and the Family." Schmitt says he made the study after finding significant differences in such rates of several papers based on the Hawaiian experience. "A few Mainland studies have investigated age differences as a factor in marital success, usually with inconclusive results. Others, equally limited in scope and mixed in findings, have tried to evaluate the chances for survival of interracial unions but none appears to have treated the two factors jointly," he said. The study compares final divorces granted in Hawaii during 1964, 1965 and 1966 with marriages performed in the State in 1961, 1962 and 1963.

Three-year lag SCHMITT EXPLAINED that the three-year lag between marriage and divorce data was intended to compensate, at least in part, for the fact that most divorces take place only after several years of marriage. Interracial marriages and divorces were defined to include all those in which the partners were members of any two different ethnic groups. The ten were Caucasian, Chinese, Filipino. Hawaiian, part Hawaiian, Japanese, Korean, Negro, Puerto Rican and other. The residual category consisted mostly of Samoans.

The data indicated that the percentage of interracial marriages was lowest for bridegrooms the same age as their brides or older by one to nine years. The percentage of mixed marriages rose rapidly for other age differences. A somewhat similar pattern existed for divorces. In other words, wide age differences were more frequent for interracial marriages and divorces in Hawaii than they were in unions in the same race. The divorce rate for unmixed couples was higher by .4 per cent than that for mixed marriages.

By age difference, however the rate ranged from 20.4 for men the same age or one to nine years older than their wives to 25.4 for men 10 years or more older and 29.1 for women older than their husbands. Divorce ratios by age difference were quite dissimilar for mixed and unmixed couples. In cases involving a man at least 10 years his wife's senior, the ratio for interracial couples was lower than the ratio for unmixed marriages. When the husband's age exceeded the wife's by zero ta nine years, the ratio was slightly lower for mixed couples than for the unmixed. With an older wife WHERE THE WIFE was older than her husband, however, the ratio soared for both categories, but especially for the interracial group.

Schmitt says, "These divorce ratios suggest that a wide age difference favoring the husband may be an important factor in marital failure among unmixed couples but not among partners from different ethnic groups. "An older wife, in contrast, seems to increase the likelihood of divorce in both mixed and unmixed unions." He suggests that the marriage-divorce ratios used in the analysis must be interpreted with considerable caution. "Some couples who married in 1961-63 were divorced before 1964 or after 1966. Some granted a divorce in 1964-66 were married after 1963 or before 1961: About a third of all couples divorced in Hawaii were married in another area and presumably some island marriages were terminated elsewhere.
