Allen-Summerhill Funeral Home, Orange City. 733439904 Funeral Cremation Services A family owned service company. 407-423-4991 By IOANA GIURCA SENTINEL STAFF WRITER Although he listed himself as a farmer with the authorities in Chemnitz, Germany, Joachim Willi Schroeter knew it would only be a matter of time until the Russians would discover the lie and send him and his new bride to Siberia at the close of World War II. So, under a darkened sky barraged by bullets, the young couple gathered what belongings they could into a small wooden wagon and headed west for a better life. Schroeter, a mechanical engineer who fled into the former West Germany, died March 9 in Orlando.

He was 83. Following his footsteps, Schroeter developed a fascination for mechanics at an early age. He built circuits and later radios. When it came time for college, he enrolled in the Academy for Technic in his native Chemnitz and studied engineering. He spent two summers adjusting valves and building pieces for an auto company nearby.

was really a said his son, Dirk J. Schroeter of Orlando, an engineer at Lockheed learned a lot from After escaping the harsh conditions of the former East Germany, the couple lived in several refugee camps in West Germany until 1949, when his wife, Doris Irmgard, gave birth to their son in a one- room apartment the couple had rented in Solingen. In 1957, the family left behind a land still in ruins and headed to the United States, thanks to a Methodist church in Perry, N.Y., that sponsored them. Schroeter first worked as a too-and-die maker. He eventually found work as a stress- analystengineer at Buffalo Forge which made industrial fans and air-handling equipment.

He held five patents from his work. After working there for 23 years, the couple retired in Longboat Key. He was a Mason and Shriner in Buffalo, N.Y., and Sarasota. He also preformed with the Shrine Chanters, a chorus, at the Kleinhans Music Hall. He was a member of Asbury Delaware Methodist Church in Buffalo.

Other survivors include one grandchild. Funeral Arrangements are handled by ICS Cremation Society, Harbour Heights. Joachim W. Schroeter fled Russians.
