of school buildings and facilities in Ogden defense housing areas looms for the near future it was learned to day The federal works agency re gional office in Salt Lake City has approved applications for $313000 for erection of two school buildings and $14000 for furniture and equipment One of the two buildings of temporary construction is a 10-room structure at Lake View a defense housing project at Roy which will have 600 family units The other will be a 26-room school at Washington Terrace 1400-family-unit now already occupied by approximately 500 families of war workers lying south of the Country Club Schools and Homes The $14000 application approved for furniture and facilities would be used in fixing up dwellings at Washington Terrace for use as school rooms while the school building was being constructed Meanwhile most of the 200 children of elementary school age at Washington Terrace are not in school at all due to distance they live from existing schools However students of junior and senior high school age are attending Weber high school or Ogden city schools Expert Awaited Dr Skipping senior specialist on school facilities of the national office of education was expected to arrive in Utah today to study the situation and make final arrangements and recommen dations before the applications for funds are sent to Washington FWA office for final approval with construction to follow immediately Dr Skipping was also to meet with Leslie Hodgson of Hodgson Ashton Evans architects who have drawn the plans for the school buildings it was "reported STATE SCANS HIGHWAY BIDS Hundred Thousand Is Asked for Road Work Near Naval Depot Important questions concerning the functions of depot management were discussed at Utah quartermaster depot today with the view of continuing present successful operations in supplying the constantly growing armed forces The scene was a conference of depot commanders of the Pacific coast area The quartermaster corps is on the alert at all times to improve expeditious supply of food and clothing to the troops The conference followed the policy of the quartermaster corps in looking ahead and janticipating the need of food clothing and supplies on expanding foreign fighting fronts Guests of quartermaster depot commander Brig Gen Ralph Talbot Jr were Col Stephens officer in charge of depot division officer of the quartermaster general aijd Col Hastings assistant chief of personnel office of the quartermaster general Washington William Miller superintendent of Weber' county schools today reported four county school busses had beeri sold to Wasatqh Motor Tours for use in hauling war work- ers to and from Hill field Ogden arsenal and the Clearfield naval supply depot The was necessary because the plan involving use of school busses by both war workers and pupils in operation for 'several weeks proved very unsatisfactory Miller reported Lieutenant James McGuire highway agency officer Ninth transportation zone has assured the board of education that no more busses will be taken for war use during the remainder of the school season Previous to the sale six busses had been in dual use which necessitated a radical change in daily school hours ten forty-five a until five in practically all of the 16 schools in the county New Restrictions Another factor that influenced the selling decision was rules and regulations from the office of defense transportation governing operation of school busses Among the rules were these bus trunk routes should be established which eliminate side trips for pupils who live within one and one-half miles of main trunk routes -that all overlapping and duplicating bus routes be eliminated that transpor tation be provided for only those pupils who live two or more miles from school and that bus stops be limited to quarter mile or more board of education however feels that the distances specified by ODT are too at least at this time of year It" i3 possible that changes may be necessary before the end of the school year to conform to the national Will Open Earlier However beginning Wednesday Feb 3 school will begin at nine-thirty a rather than ten forty-five a and the following basic policy will be followed by busses with necessary adjustments to be made later: No transportation will be provided for "children who live within one and one-half miles from school No overlapping or duplicating bus routes will be conducted and no side trips for children who live within one mile from thq main trunk routes will be made The entire change however was pointed out by school board officials was made necessary because representatives of the Ninth transportation one army reported a critical shortage of transportation facilities existed and it was necessary to take over the busses Schedules Shown Meanwhile copies of new schedules and instructions for pupils on vwhere they would haveA to meet busses Wednesday and how far they would have to walk etc were being delivered to students of all schools late this afternoon Four bus drivers were also necessarily laid off from their routes Marriage Licenses Increase in Ogderf Little Danny
