TEXAS BATTLE ROYAL I Orsino during the pre-game batting practice. "Don't worry. I'll find a way to get back," Freese said wistfully: "He will, too," seconded Mahoney. Alyea ripped a double to drive in Buffalo's first run in going 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

Hirtz tripled in a run and scored another in the Bisons' five-run sixth inning against loser Paul Toth. Up until then it looked as though Hawaii had its third straight spring i in hand. Johnnie Seale and Dennis Kissane, two lefthanders, stopped the Bisons on two hits for the first six innings and the Islanders led, 3-1. Manager Bill Adah-made wholesale changes in playing everybody he wound up playing 18 in all enabling Buffalo to rally and win. He didn't yank toth as the righthander struggled through the five-run inning.

That won it for Buffalo, but the real winner was Mahoney the way he was being congratulated yesterday, ISLANDER BRIEFS: The two teams meet again today in Sarasota Two ex-Islander pitchers have quit the game Pete Craig, who's HAWAII bhb 5 3 0 2 0 0 5 1 1 2 1 1 BUFFALO Hirtz 3b 3 Lopez If 2 Holman lb 4 Alyea rf 4 Billings cf 4 Shoemaker 2b 3 Harrah ss 4 Vickery 3 Hannan Orsino ph 1 ToDDin a 3 0 0 3 0 0 2 0 0 3 1 I 1 Ortiz cf Oail If Stewart rf Nash lb Melton 3b Morales 2b Reichrbach ss Napier Seate Farrell ph-lf Kissane Severson 2b Hunter lb Tath Mahoney ss Brinkman ph Plesha ph Dennis 3 0 0 1 0 0 2 1 1 Werhasph 1 1 0 0 Loun Freese ph 1 0 0 0 1 1 0 10 0 10 0 Doi to headl ine card 0 0 0 36 10 4 AUSTINt Total Total 30 8 5 T5ABA rrvm lbs. LAKE WALES. Fla. Dave Hirtz and Brant Alyea two of eight former Islanders playing against Hawaii led. Buffalo to a 6-4 victory over the new Islanders in their exhibition game here yesterday. Rupe Toppin, who started last year's opener for Hawaii, was the winning pitcher and two other ex-Islanders Jim Hannan and Don Loun pitched for Wayne Terwilliger's Buffalo team.

Despite the victory, they all wished they could trade places and be back in the Islands again. In fact, the most envied player yesterday was Hawaii shortstop Jim Mahoney, who had a grand reunion with his former teammates. Mahoney is the only returning Islander from last year as Hawaii changed its parent club from Washington to the Chicago White Sox. "Hey, Maho. How did you swing that deal?" yelled Carlos (Chief) Medrano, who pitched a day earlier.

All smiles, -Mahoney i his former mates, "I'll send you all some sand from Waikiki in a letter." "I hope you get run over by a surfboard," cracked Gene Freese, his former roomie and running mate. "Boy, I really miss that place." "Yeh," echoed a chorus of ex-Islanders, including Hector Lopez, Hannan and John thai holds Flyers to three singles Lefty Cal Chai held the Hickam Flyers to three singles in pitching Fishland to an 8-1 victory in the Puerto Rican Baseball League last night at Flyer Stadium. Chai had a no-hitter going for five innings before Bob Mulcahy broke the spell with a single to open the sixth inning. Bob Matias paced Fish-land's eight-hit attack with 3-for-5 off two Hickam hur-lers. One of Bob's hits went for a triple.

Herb Baptiste was the other Fishland two-hitter. Fishland 103 301 0003 8 2 OVER TOP er PIN FAtlS jL. Moses Ome, Rainbow coach, was exceptionally pleased with the 100-yard dash performance by William Pfeil, who specializes in the 220 and 440. Pfeil asked to run the 100 as a conditioning aide and was clocked in 9.8 seconds.

Friday's meet will open at 7:30 with field events. Running events start at 8. Rite of spring SARASOTA, Fla. Pre-season training is baseball's annual rite of spring. It is the time when a rookie pitcher gets a good look blanks the opposition for 13 innings and gets sent down to the minors so that he can pitch every four days.

Meanwhile the ace lefthander on the squad gets bombed for three straight outings has an ERA that resembles the Vietnam budget but makes the club easily because "he'll come around." The same could be said for the young outfielder who bats .427 but is sent down so that "he can play every day." On the other hand Mr. MVP bats only .043 but stays on because "he's just in an early slump." So what's the bother? What's the purpose of spring training? Basically it's a time for 'pitchers to round into shape and for the batters to get their timing. Maybe too it's just a time to prove to the coaches what they knew all along about Joe So-and-So. That could be said for all spring camps including the Chicago White Sox'. Nobody's really saying anything on record but somebody can always be quoted off the record as to who'll be with the big club and who won't.

One Chicago sportswriter already "picked" the club for Manager Eddie Stanky. "On March 14 he already picks my team for me" Stan-. ky told reporters. Stanky who's not living up to his name "The Brat" at all this spring was nevertheless a bit put out because the writer said Rocky Colavito wouldn't make the cut. It didn't help either when the list only showed 24 players one below the player limit for opening day.

Who's who for the Islanders We don't want to incur Stanky's wrath but at the same time Islander fans deserve some kind of line on who'll be on this year's Hawaii team. By positions, a rough draft looks like this Pitchers The White Sox plan to carry 10 pitchers and nine appear to be set. That leaves Jim O'Toole and Bob Priddy battling it out for the final spot, so one will wind up with Hawaii along with Buster Narum, Dan Lazar and Mickey Abarbanel. Also set to pitch for the Islanders is Danny Murphy bonus outfielder making a comeback as a reliever along with those already in the minor league camp Bill Fischer, Aurelio Monteagudo, Johnnie Seale and Paul Toth. Whoever winds up with the Islanders Manager Bill Adair should have quite a pitching staff, conceivably the best in Hawaii's eight-year history.

Catchers Jim Napier is definitely ticketed for Hawaii, and he'll do most of the catching for the Islanders until one of the four with the big club is sent down. Then Napier will be No. 2. Most likely the Sox will send down Ed Herman instead of Dick Booker since they want Herr-man, who's younger, to play every day. Infielders George Kernek at first, Dick Littleton at second, Rich Morales at short and, perhaps, Jim Stewart at third will probably be Adair's starting infield.

Stewart can also play the outfield, but he'll be used somewhere because of his bat. Outfielders Bill Voss, Cotton Nash and Buddy Bradford may comprise the outfield in which case it could be the PCL's best this season. Nash and Voss can make Islander fans forget Willie Kirkland for Nash hit 28 homers at Indianapolis in 100 games and Voss socked three in four games at the Honolulu Stadium last year. And if the Islanders get Bradford he'll be another in a long line of outstanding centerfielders who've played for the Islanders. If Adaj can get a team anywhere near what's listed the optimism expressed by all the writers in camp here about Hawaii's title chances for 1963 is no mere spring S3 "fMAIVIA vs.
