games BETHEL (6-3, 5-3) VS. PHOEBUS (9-0, 8-0) WHEN: 7 p.m. WHERE: Darling Stadium. VIDEO: LSC 48 in Hampton (live); Hampton City Internet site. THE BUZZ: For Bethel, seventh in the Eastern Region Division 5 ratings, a win would solidify its postseason picture.

Aloss leaves all up to chance. Phoebus is not only in but has locked the No. 1 seed. The Phantoms are after their 30th consecutive Peninsula District victory, which would be two short of all-time record. THE PICK: Phoebus 28, Bethel 18.

Johnson DENBIGH (4-5, 3-5) AT GLOUCESTER (0-9, 0-8) WHEN: 7 p.m. WHERE: Gloucester High. THE BUZZ: After a 3-0 start, the Patriots have lost five of their last six games. also playing without their top quarterback, running back and lineman. WR Lavon Pearson (40 catches, 697 yards) has had an excellent season.

The Dukes still are looking for their first win and will finish with at least nine losses for the eighth time in nine years. THE PICK: Denbigh 20, Gloucester 17. Johnson HERITAGE (1-8, 1-7) VS. WOODSIDE (8-1, 7-1) WHEN: 7 p.m. WHERE: Todd Stadium.

THE BUZZ: The Hurricanes would love to give coach Jason Robinson a win in his final game, but a big task. The Wolverines are rolling behind QB Aaron Evans, who needs 106 rushing yards to become the second QB in district history to run and pass for 1,000 yards in the same season. A win would give the Wolverines their first nine-win season. Heritage RB Terrance Malone needs 133 yards for 1,000. THE PICK: Woodside 37, Heritage 12.

Johnson POQUOSON (4-4, 4-3) AT NEW KENT (1-7, 1-6) WHEN 7:30 p.m. WHERE New Kent High. THE BUZZ Poquoson has shown an increasing inability to run the ball or stop the run. If New Kent, led by star running back Justin Williams (826 rushing yards), limits its turnovers, it could present an obstacle to a win the Islanders need to earn a Region I Division 3 playoff berth. THE PICK Poquoson 21, New Kent 13.

GRAFTON (4-4, 3-4) VS. LAFAYETTE (4-4, 3-4) WHEN 7:30 p.m. WHERE James City County Stadium. RADIO: 92.3FM, 107.9FM. THE BUZZ Grafton might be without star Ryan Johansen (injured calf) for the second consecutive week.

The injury-plagued Clippers are thin at several other positions. Always solid defensively, Lafayette is hitting its stride offensively, and it showed in 389 rushing yards in a 62-27 upset win last week over York. THE PICK Lafayette 21, Grafton 7. WARHILL (1-7, 0-7) VS. TABB (5-3, 5-2) WHEN 7:30 p.m.

WHERE Bailey Field at York High. THE BUZZ Tabb enters the game with two huge advantages: vastly superior talent and lots of motivation. The surging Tigers are in the Region I Division 4 playoff hunt, although they need to win out and get a little help. The winning part should be no problem against the scrappy Lions. THE PICK Tabb 42, Warhill 6.

JAMESTOWN (4-4, 3-4) AT SMITHFIELD (7-1, 6-1) WHEN 7:30 p.m. WHERE Smithfield High. THE BUZZ Smithfield can clinch at least a tie for its first district title in 16 years. But this could be a difficult game for the Packers against the rugged, power-oriented Eagles. A likely battle of ground games features two rushers: Evan Moog (1,084) and Montrell Johnson THE PICK Smithfield 21, Jamestown 14.

YORK (6-2, 5-2) AT BRUTON (6-2, 5-2) WHEN 7:30 p.m. WHERE Bruton High. THE BUZZ To get the win it needs to remain in the Region IDivision 4 playoff hunt, York must improve its struggling run defense (221.1 yards per game allowed). If Ben Edwards go for the Falcons, be forced to pass often a tricky proposition against the ever-blitzing Bruton defense. THE PICK Bruton 28, York 20.

SMALLER-SCHOOL GAMES Christchurch at Covenant, 2:30 HRA (2-6, 1-3 TCIS) at (6-3, 3-1), 7 Charles City (2-6, 1-2 Tri-Rivers) at Surry County (1-7, 0-2), 7 Franklin (7-1, 2-0 Tri-Rivers) at Sussex Central (7-1, 2-0), 7 King Queen Central (1-7, 0-2 Tidewater) at Middlesex (3-5, 0-2), 7 King William (6-2, 2-0 Tidewater) at West Point (9-0, 3-0), 7 Want to know the score? In fact, rushing total does not rank any higher than fifth on the single-game list at his own school. Aquick glance at Tabb rushing totals shows three players combining for at least four games of 300-plus- yards.

Tigers immortal Terry Kirby had two of those 300-yard games in the postseason during his run to the 1987 Division 4 state title. Kirby ran for 309 yards in a Region I semifinal win over John F. Kennedy, of Suffolk, then added 307 two weeks later in a state semifinal win over Charlottesville. memorable postseason included 1,162 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns in four playoff games. The next state title came in 1990, with Simeon Tucker playing the role of star running back.

Tucker ran for 313 yards in the regular-season win against a Nansemond River team they beat in the first round of the playoffs. Tabb made a two-season move to the Peninsula District in the mid-1990s, before Grafton opened to bring enrollment back down to the Group AA level. Virginia Tech recruit Chris Wright provided the highlight of 8-2 season in 1994, rushing for 313 yards in awin over Warwick. At least two other Bay Rivers District backs have run for more than 300 yards in a game this decade. Josh Zidenberg ran for 327 yards in a 2003 game against Smithfield, before the Dyrell Roberts ran for 368 yards in 2007 against York.

Records survive night Corey 305-yard game stirs memories of Terry Kirby, successors By Marty 247-4963 Storylines EDWARDS QUESTIONABLE It is unclear whether York quarterback Ben Edwards will be available, or if be effective if he is available, for the game tonight at Bruton. Edwards injured his collarbone in a 62-27 loss to Lafayette last week. Prior to injuring the collarbone, Edwards finally was getting back close to full speed from the ankle injury that had slowed him for a month.

The Falcons (6-2, 5-2 district) can reach the Division 4 playoffs by winning their final two games, but a loss to Bruton (6-2, 5-2) probably kills their playoff hopes. HOME SWEET HOME Awin tonight ensures Bruton of home-field advantage for its semifinal in the Region I Division 3 playoffs Nov. 20. The Panthers could then ensure themselves of playing at home all the way through the regional by beating Tabb in the regular-season finale or if James Monroe loses its finale against Courtland. NO TIGER PAUSE Tabb (5-3, 5-2) averaged 31.3 points and 408 yards in recent wins over Lafayette, Grafton, Jamestown and Poquoson.

But the improvement is as big a reason the Tigers are in playoff contention. After allowing averages of 32 points and 354 yards in their first five games, the Tigers have surrendered just 4.3 points and 135 yards per game that past three weeks. BIG NUMBER 506 Total yards for Tabb in its 35-7 win over Poquoson district high this season. Patrick Rushed for 305 yards in rout at Poquoson On Thursday, the Peninsula 10 coaches will get together for their annual gabfest and pick the All-PD teams. Their choices are bound to result in some controversy on Earth did (fill in name from other school) make first-team linebacker and not (fill in name from your But, face it, not an easy task.

More times than not, there are more deserving players than spots. not going to try for an entire team, but here is one semi-informed opinion on the individual honors: Disclaimer: one game left, so my out if something crazy happens over the weekend .) Offensive player of the year: You could pick Colby Goodwyn (1,304 yards, 19 TDs) or Clifton Richardson (1,240, 11). But this vote goes to Woodside quarterback Aaron Evans who has produced big numbers (1,069 yards passing, 894 rushing) and wins (8-1 going into tonight). Evans went through a three-week stretch when he completed only 7-of-23 passes, but hit on 47-of-68 (69 percent) for 830 yards and nine touchdowns in his last five games. Defensive player of the year: There are several good defensive players, but nobody stands out especially in the eyes of opposing offensive coordinators like Phoebus end Daquan Romero.

He has 12 sacks this season despite missing one game and playing the remaining eight on a bad ankle. Just imagine if he were 100 percent healthy. Coach of the year: This is a two-horse race. Despite inevitable comparisons to his predecessor, Stan Sexton kept Phoebus on track. But Danny Dodson has Woodside on the verge of its best season ever, its only loss coming on a last-second field goal.

Atough call, but a slight lean toward Dodson. INSIDER PENINSULA DISTRICT Read the blog Dave Johnson has Peninsula District football covered. Check out his blog at HRVarsity.com/ insidethepd. Leaning toward Evans, Romero Our guess at the top honors has an emphasis on Woodside, Phoebus By Dave Johnson 247-4649 Storylines PLAYOFF-BOUND? The only locks right now are Phoebus (No. 1 no matter what) in Division 5and Woodside in D-6.

Hampton needs only to beat Menchville to clinch. Bethel is seventh in D-5 but needs to beat Phoebus or get some outside help to make its third straight playoff appearance. Warwick must beat Kecoughtan on Saturday and have two teams above it in the rankings lose. So it could be as many as five or as few as two (though three seems to be the worst-case scenario) in the PD. STILL STREAKING They have a new coach and some new faces, but the Phantoms keep on winning.

A victory tonight over Bethel would give Phoebus 30 consecutive wins in Peninsula District games. Only five of those wins have come by fewer than 21 points. streak ranks second in PD history to Hampton, which won 32 straight from 1980-84. WOODSIDE ABOUT TO MAKE HISTORY? Few outside the program predicted be this good. Their only loss came to undefeated Phoebus on a last-second field goal.

And a win tonight over 1-8 Heritage would give Woodside its first nine-win season in its 14-year history. After starting in 1996, the Wolverines played 53 games (into 2001) before their ninth win. BIG NUMBER 8 Field goals made this year by Eric Enderson, which ties the third-best mark by a PD kicker. Matt Bevins holds the record with 11 field goals in 2007.
