Nick Mathews Sports Editor, 247-4962, Freshman Aris McGlone-English play at quarterback the last three weeks has helped Virginia Union take control of the Division II Central Intercollegiate Athletic Northern Division race. After seeing only spot duty in the first half, the Hampton resident has started the last three games, all of which the run-oriented Panthers have won.

They have risen to 6-3, 5-1 in the conference, and will qualify for the CIAA championship game against Fayetteville State if they win at home Saturday in Richmond against Elizabeth City State. In a 45-6 rout of Lincoln (Pa.) on Oct. 10, McGlone-English carried five times for 30 yards and was 9-of-18 for 151 yards and a touchdown, despite two interceptions. McGlone then completed 3 of 7 for 21 yards in 31-3 triumph at rival Virginia State, and he returned to the forefront in 17-16 home win over Bowie State, which came to Hovey Field undefeated in the conference. In that contest, McGlone-English was 12-of-24 for 157 yards, including an 8-yard touchdown pass to Arnold White in the second quarter.

McGlone-English also had five carries for 13 yards including two sacks. Earlier, McGlone-English, a 6-foot-2, 205-pounder who is one of three quarterbacks to play substantially for VUU, was 1-for-4 for 15 yards with an interception in a loss to Old Dominion and 1-for-1 for 11 yards in a win over Central State of Ohio. For the season, he is 26-of-54 (48 percent) with three touchdowns and three interceptions, for a passer-efficiency rating of 110.6. His early success might not surprise fans who follow Bethel High, where he was nicknamed because of his experience and maturity. As a sophomore and junior, he split time with Teddy BaCote as the starting quarterback, but McGlone-English moved into that spot full-time as a senior last season.

Usually taking snaps out of the shotgun formation and throwing to many receivers, he was the All-Peninsula District and Daily Press All-Stars second-team QB, behind Tajh Boyd. McGlone-English also received All-PD honorable mention in basketball for a Bethel squad that finished 23-4, beat eventual state Group AAA champion Fork and reached the Eastern Region quarterfinals. He is majoring in education at VUU. To nominate someone for Star Track, please e-mail with a head shot if possible. For archived Star Track features, go to dailypress.com/startrack.
