SPORTS High Schools If you make it to a Bay Rivers District football game tonight, have plenty of opportunities to catch one over the airwaves.

Three district games will air to some degree on television or radio. The Poquoson-at-Bruton game can be seen in its entirety via tape delay on Cox Channel 11 at 4 p.m. on Saturday and Monday. The Monday telecast will serve as alead-in to Cox which will air highlights of the game. think a lot of talent in the Bay Rivers said Cox 11 color commentator Matt White, who will team with play-by-play man Chris Park on the telecast.

not as much as in the larger districts, but there are plenty of good players and exciting games. year we broadcast the Poquoson-York game (a 22-21 Poquoson victory) and it was one of the best games we did. So we decided to telecast two Bay Rivers games this year, game and the York-Grafton game on Nov. While Cox 11 is at Bruton, WAVY-TV Night helicopter will land at Smithfield to help celebrate the homecoming festivities. Highlights of the game against Lafayette can be seen on the Night high school football highlight show, beginning at 11:15 p.m.

Meanwhile, The Tide (92.3 FM) and BACH (107.9 FM) radio stations will air the Jamestown-Tabb game live. The broadcast begins at 7:20 p.m., with kickoff set for 7:30, just as it is for the Bruton- Poquoson and Lafayette- Smithfield games. The Tide and BACH, which have aired district games weekly throughout the season, have added the Oct. 30 Lafayette-at-York game to its radio lineup. The stations also will air games the final two weeks of the regular season, depending on how they affect the district standings.

Airwaves filled with BRD action The entire Poquoson-Bruton game will be shown on tape delay by Cox 11 By Marty 247-4963 Storylines ELIMINATION GAME The Jamestown (3-3, 2-3 district) vs. Tabb (3-3, 3-2) matchup, tonight at 7:30 at Bailey Field, is crucial for both teams. The victor needs to win out and get help to reach the Region I Division 4 playoffs.

The loser is out of the race. INJURED PANTHER Lee will not be in uniform tonight for Bruton against Poquoson. Lee, a 5-foot-9, 160-pound junior, appeared headed for a big season when he ran for 155 yards, including a 30-yard touchdown, and returned a kickoff 92 yards for a TD in the first two victories. But Lee carried the ball only twice since suffering a knee injury in the second game. Coach Tracy Harrod said the injury might sideline Lee the rest of the season.

might need to get the knee taken care of so be ready for next year. If so, confident in the guys we have replacing CLIPPERS RECOGNIZED VHSL director Ken Tilley recognized Grafton this week for its Faculty Spirit Award. The week of each home football game, three Clippers, selected for their previous performance, give their jersey to a faculty or staff member, who wears the jersey to the game, stands with the team on the sidelines, is introduced to the crowd and throws T-shirts to students in the stands. BIG NUMBER 30.3 Yards per catch for Tabb receiver Chris Ham, who has 11 receptions for 333 yards and five TDs. been another disappointing fall at Gloucester, which came into this season having lost at least nine games seven times in eight years.

But the Dukes feel they have some hope tonight homecoming, in fact against another winless team. While most Peninsula District fans are anticipating the annual Hampton-Phoebus showdown, Gloucester hosts Heritage in a matchup of teams with identical 0-7, 0-6 records. The Dukes won last game 42-36. upbeat and excited they been down all year thinking, look where we are in the Gloucester coach Sonny Merchant said. kids feel getting better, they just need to be more consistent.

They know they can do a pretty good job if they fall down and do stupid things. going to get more excited about the possibility of winning against an opponent they have some advantages on. Heritage has been struggling the same way we Though they are winless, the Dukes did come close last week against Kecoughtan. After falling behind 21-0, Gloucester scored 17 unanswered points to make it a one-possession game in the fourth quarter. But the Warriors pulled away for a 31-17 win.

The last thing a depth-thin team needs is injuries, which Gloucester has battled all year. Especially on the offensive line, where the Dukes could least afford it. The good news for Merchant is that Dalton West, a 290- pound tackle, is expected to play for the first time tonight. Raheim Williams, a 215-pound sophomore, also is expected back. trouble on the line makes it even more amazing that quarterback Zack Tarpey has thrown only one interception in close to 100 attempts this season.

INSIDER PENINSULA DISTRICT Read the blog Dave Johnson has Peninsula District football covered. Check out his blog at HRVarsity.com/ insidethepd. Gloucester eager for shot to win The victor between the Dukes and Heritage will break through tonight By Dave Johnson 247-4649 Storylines ONE IF BY LAND AND IT Kecoughtan has been a run-oriented team in Glenn four seasons, but never to this extreme. In last 31-17 win over Gloucester, all 36 of the plays were runs, though they were called for an illegal forward pass on a pitchout. Tidwell said he remember a game when he call at least one passing play.

But nobody in the PD has fewer passes than 62 this season. THE REVOLVING DOOR AT QB Heritage had much success in the air, either. But the Hurricanes have tried different options. Four players Andrew Warren, Richard Outlaw, Adore Pope and Jalen Woodard have started at least once at quarterback. Combined, they have completed 24 of 69 passes for 242 yards.

DEPARTMENT Bethel and Denbigh have exactly the same record overall, 3-3 in the district. Each has one victory over a team with awinning record. Neither has lost to a team with a losing record. Head-to-head, the Bruins beat the Patriots 56-0. Yet in the latest Eastern Region Division 5 ratings, Denbigh is eighth (23.0) and Bethel is 10th (22.7).

BIG NUMBER 3 Peninsula District teams that passed for 0 yards in last games: Bethel, Menchville and Kecoughtan. In addition, Heritage threw for 12 yards and Hampton 10. games PHOEBUS (7-0, 6-0) VS. HAMPTON (5-2, 4-2) WHEN: 7 p.m. WHERE: Darling Stadium.

VIDEO: LSC cable channel 48 in Hampton and its Web site. THE BUZZ: For the first time in 12 years, a two-game gap in the standings between these teams on game day. Phoebus has won the last three games in this series and has never won four in a row. RB Colby Goodwyn (150 yards per game, 16 TDs) and a defense allowing 5.1 points per game make the Phantoms the clear favorite. But Hampton has a dangerous QB in David Watford (45-of-87, 979 yards, 9TDs), who is a threat on the ground as well.

THE PICK: Phoebus 24, Hampton 17. Johnson DENBIGH (4-3, 3-3) VS. WARWICK (4-3, 4-2) WHEN: 7 p.m. WHERE: Todd Stadium. VIDEO: NNPS (Cox cable channel 47 and Verizon FiOs 17 in Newport News, and nnpstv.com).

THE BUZZ: A game both teams need for their playoff hopes to remain alive. But while Denbigh has lost two of its last three, Warwick has won three in a row. The Patriots ride a passing attack that features WR Lavon Pearson (36 catches, 672 yards, 5 TDs). The Raiders are third in the PD with 215 rushing ypg. THE PICK: Warwick 31, Denbigh 24.

Johnson HERITAGE (0-7, 0-6) AT GLOUCESTER (0-7, 0-6) WHEN: 7 p.m. WHERE: Gloucester High. THE BUZZ: The Gotta Give Game with both teams still searching for their first win. The Dukes won last game in a shootout, 42-36. For Gloucester, QB Zack Tarpey has been solid by avoiding turnovers.

The Hurricanes rely heavily on RB Terrance Malone (154 carries, 653 yards). THE PICK: Gloucester 14, Heritage 12. Johnson POQUOSON (4-2, 4-1) AT BRUTON (4-2, 3-2) WHEN 7:30 p.m. WHERE Bruton High. TV: Cox 11, delayed at 4 p.m.

Saturday. THE BUZZ The fun for fans of physical football is that both defenses are fast and hard-hitting. Both teams favor the run out of the Wing-T formation, with Poquoson attempting to run over you, while Bruton tries to run by you. The difference is that Poquoson is better through the air. THE PICK Poquoson 21, Bruton 14.

LAFAYETTE (3-3, 2-3) AT SMITHFIELD (5-1, 4-1) WHEN 7:30 p.m. WHERE Smithfield High. THE BUZZ Smithfield enters its homecoming game on the heels of one of the more impressive wins in recent Bay Rivers history its 41-14 dismantling of York last week. Packers coach Tyris Hill is focused on making sure his players overconfident. Lafayette works hard, but is young and has been inconsistent.

THE PICK Smithfield 28, Lafayette 14. YORK (5-1, 4-1) VS. WARHILL (1-5, 0-5) WHEN 7:30 p.m. WHERE James City County Stadium. THE BUZZ York cannot overlook scrappy Warhill, which has proved to be a tough out for several good teams.

But Falcons star Ben Edwards is still clearly hurting from the sprained ankle sustained four weeks ago. Does York rest him some this week to heal for a potential stretch run to the district title? THE PICK York 35, Warhill 19. JAMESTOWN (3-3, 2-3) VS. TABB (3-3, 3-2) WHEN 7:30 p.m. WHERE Bailey Field.

RADIO: 92.3FM, 107.9FM. THE BUZZ Both defenses are coming off of shutout performances against quality competition. The visiting Eagles allowed 49 yards in beating Bruton, and Tabb stopped Grafton for minus-15 in its win last week. Who gets loose? Jamestown ball-hawk Evan Moog (916 rushing yards) or Tabb breakaway threat Corey Patrick (784 rushing yards)? THE PICK Tabb 21, Jamestown 17. GRAFTON (4-2, 3-2) AT NEW KENT (0-6, 0-5) WHEN 7:30 p.m.

WHERE New Kent High. THE BUZZ Penalties and turnovers four takeaways versus 15 giveaways are killing a New Kent offense that has otherwise moved the ball decently. That do against a Grafton team hungry to get back on stride after last 22-0 loss to Tabb, the only hiccup in an otherwise upbeat season. THE PICK Grafton 42, NK 7. SMALLER-SCHOOL GAMES TONIGHT Portsmouth Christian (5-2) at Hampton Christian (5-3), 7 Bishop Sullivan (6-1, 4-0 TCIS) at HRA (1-6, 0-3), 7 Blessed Sacrament Huguenot (6-1, 3-0 VCC) at Isle of Wight (7-0, 3-0), 7:30 Nansemond-Suffolk (5-2, 2-1 TCIS) at Greenbrier Christian (1-6, 1-2), 7 Charles City (2-4, 1-0 Tri- Rivers) at Franklin (6-1, 1-0), 7 Windsor (3-4, 0-1 Tri-Rivers) at Sussex Central (5-1, 0-0), 7 West Point (7-0, 1-0 Tidewater) at King and Queen Central (1-6, 0-1), 7 Mathews (4-3, 1-0 Tidewater) at King William (4-2, 0-0), 7 Northampton (1-6) at Middlesex (2-4), 7 Kenston Forest (1-7) at Tidewater Academy (0-7), 7 SATURDAY Trinity Episcopal (2-5) at Christchurch (2-3), 1 Want to know the score?
