A-4 June 22, 1973 Honolulu Star-Bulletin The Telecast? Ugh, Ugh, Ugh Dave By Pierre Bowman too) If Donnelly's Hawaii The satellite pickup featured Sarge Kahanamoku acting as emcee and stumbling over the names of people and places as he introduced one politician after another who flew on the junket to Danny's opening. If the show did othing else, it set new records for trivia via an expensive satellite broadcast. When Danny finally came on, poor production values made it difficult to tell how he was doing. Bad equipment apparently made his musicians from his Kahala Terrace show sound somewhat flat. The TV show was an exercise in provincial thinking, and a pity for Keleikini and his friends.

SATURDAY 10:00 P.M. ZOO FEIJ6E nOIISARRAT AVE. 50 IQLAHD AQTAOTG 20th YEAR Star-Bulletin Writer One word takes care of describing last night's satellite-delayed television special of Danny Kaleikini's Las Vegas nightclub opening. It was putrid. Reports from Vegas say Danny's a smash.

You certainly couldn't tell it from last night's TV show. KHON-TV produced it with the kind of finesse you find on TV surveillance cameras at supermarkets. It was padded out with a lot of pre-f ilmed nonsense of Danny driving around Honolulu to hear the Mayor and Lieutenant Governor read proclamations on his behalf. But the worst was yet to come. krrfaandiMlng Services ff II Afl WAIPAHU HONOLULU THE HAWAII CORPORATION Mil Construction ti Development HIC FARRINGTON EWA KAPIOLANI BLVD.

Neither will the armada of friends, politicians, well-wishers and gamblers from Hawaii who flew over to see the Kahala Hilton star make his Las Vegas debut at Casear's Palace. Paul Anka will also remember Danny's opening last night.

But more of that later Though he was nervous for 48 hours before taking stage, Danny seemed as calm as he does at the Hala Terrace when he emerged in his white brocade suit, resplendent as befits the co-star of a Palace showroom The evening got off to an unpromising start when Sarge Kahana-moku, mysteriously acting as emcee for the Hawaiian portion of the evening, stumbled through his paces, calling Caesar's prexy Bill Weinberger "Mr. Weinberg" about 10 times and introducing the mayor of Las Vegas as "the mayor of Nevada." It was unprofessional but somewhat obligatory, as were awards made by Mayor Frank Fasi and Lt. Gov. George Ariyoshi for the benefit of the TV cameras which were beaming the show back to Hawaii THERE WERE many other politicians in the house, including City Council Chairman George Koga and State Senate President Dave McClung. There were so many familiar faces in the Caesar's Palace casino that one could easily fantasize that we were home and that legalized gambling had come to the Islands Danny received a standing ovation from the largely Hawaiian audience at the opening show, but so too did Paul Anka, who followed Danny In fact, Anka proved himself to be one hell of a sport by granting Danny so much of the spotlight stars usually reserve for themselves Danny's name was the same size as Paul's.

on the huge marquee outside the hotel it looked even bigger since it's longer When Danny had finished and his part of the festive evening got under way, Anka mentioned his Hawaiian ties the fact that his first big concert was in Hawaii, promoted by Tom Moffatt of KPOI Paul didn't have to worry a whole lot about -the Islanders having a letdown after seeing one of their own making it big. Paul came on like gangbusters and surprised many of the local folks with his sophisticated and driving show CAESAR'S FLEW OVER two chartered United planes for the opening and prexy Weinberger and his v.p., Ash Resnick, were so happy with the reception that they indicated they'd like Danny to return each year All Vegas is Hawaii-oriented this week. Nephi Hannemann opened at the Tropicana and all the employes at that hotel were wearing huge stickers that said 'Hawaii Day." The Tropicana flew in a large Hawaii contingent of its own on Western Airlines. And Nephi made it a point to drop by to catch Danny's opening. Also, Don Ho, Zulu and two dozen others called from Honolulu to wish Danny the best.

What with Danny's fine performance and that of his dancers and his musicians, plus vocalist Na-lani Olds, the television taping, lei presentations and awards to charity ($6,650 to both the Kui Lee Cancer Fund and the Nevada Kidney Foundation), the opening was a huge success MEANWHILE, ACTS WITH Hawaii ties abound. Downtown at the Golden Nugget is the Dick Dale Show, featuring Dick's wife, the former Jeannie Tully The Reycards are at the Dunes Lounge, the Checkmates at the Flamingo and Sidro's Armada (formerly Beverly Sidro with the Sneakers) at the Sahara Lounge The Hawaii group also caught Diana Ross in her final performance at Caesars, as did Ed McMahon, Billy Preston and Shecky Green (who brought wife Nalani Kele to Danny's opening) Diana told us her sister works in Honolulu for Pam Am which was news to us and said she'd love to visit the Isles so Caesar's has rendered unto Danny Kaleikini on his first Vegas outing what is normally reserved for "name" stars. Who knows, maybe that makes him one now!
