''1 1 TUESDAY HORNING. AUGUST 8,1 879. Gov. KeHogg on the South. Believes the Repvbllcana will Carry -North and Boath Carolina, IxnUIana and Florida The Condition ef Mlsl-alppl.

HSew York Tribune, 3d.J v-, Gov." Kellogg, of Louisiana, was in the "city yesterday, and, in conversation with reporter, he made the follow- cai condition oi mewum. The comparative indifference regarding political matters -which I hoar spoken i of in the North seems to extend over the country. Certainly there is no Eiaam In the South. I might, indeed, say that there is scarcely a general ln- terest. Southern Democrats do not I believe, a change of govern- i ment.

They have an exaggerated opin-i ion of the power and inliuence of the executive branch of the government to control an election, and they expect tre-mentions exertions on the part of those now in power. The local governments in the South are the chief bones of contention, and the interest centres chiefly there, for it is in connection with local politics that the Southern Democrats expect to nnd theii reward. And let me Bay here that one who is not familiar -with Southern life cannot form the least ''idra of tho supreme greed for office which reigns throughout the South. The negroes are as devoted as ever to the Republican party. It means to them as fully as it ever did the continuation in power of their friends and tho perpetua- tion.of those principles on which in their opinion their rights as citizens depend.

If a Northerner; unfamiliar with South-em politics, were to go Sonth he would hear a great deal said about a division in the negro vote. Louisiana Democrats would tell him that they are going to carry the State election with the help of the colored voters. Now, that is all tmn-combe; it is preposterous, and no one knows it better than the very men who -would iBSifit most strongly npon its truth. At the recent Democratic State Convention in Baton Rouge the managers nominated a ticket composed of white men, without a single colorod man upon it and, furthermore, a majority of the nominees, in importance if not numerically, were ex-Confederate officers. Now, is it probable that such a ticket is going to be supported by colored voters There are ten thousand more colored voters than white voters in the State, and thev will carry tho election without a shadow of doubt.

In Mississippi, if there were a fair election the result would be the same. But look at the state of affairs in Mississippi, Men are robbed, maltreated and murdered they are dropping like autumn leaves, but very little is heard about it. The executive Government is in the hands of the opposition, and all complaints are pigeon-holed. The Federal Government can only inter- fere at the requett of the State Esecu- tive, and he of course will not request interference. I say the Republican ticket ought to succeed in Mississippi by the number of Republican votes, but there is very little chance of its success.

In most of the other States there is, I think, a strong feeling in favor of the Democratic ticket. It is not personal feeling toward the nominees, but a snp- port of the party which is directly opposed In reply to the question what States he thought might go Republican, Gov. Kel-, logg 6aid I have already mentioned, Louisiana. The Republicans oncht to -pet 'North Carolina, South Carolina and Florida, and in my opinion those States will give a Republican majority. They ought by right to have Mississippi, but that is scarcely to be expected.

trn I j'ijAve a very inaccurate conception of condition of the South, and it i is iiot surprising- thatK they change their opinions after even a short time among us." spending Mimicry as a Means of Defense. The walking-stick insects, as they are called, in their turn imitate in the skeleton-like structure of their bodies the appearance of dried twigs, and it is a feingular fact that even in their awkward, ungainly manner of walking, the resemblance to the chance movements of twigs is clearly perceptible, the mimicry being rendered more realistic through this latter phase. Then, also, we find crrtain harmless groups of moths imitating very closely the outward ap- Ecarance of species oi stinging bees and ornets. And one remarkable case of mimicry is the well-known instance of eome perfectly inodorous South American butterflies, which perfectly reproduce the external appearance of other butterflies which emit a most offensive odor; the reason assigned for the latter phnse of mimicry being the very feasible one that the inodorous forms are protected, from the attacks of birds by their resemblance to their strong-emelling neignbors. As a last instance of this curious phase of animal organ ization, we may note the example ar-nished by those various little iishes, the hippocamai or sea horses, so named from the obvious resemblance of the form of the head to that of a horse, the bodies of which become covered with Ions: streamers of certain kinds of seaweed so that when these fishes rest amid the seaweed-covered nooks of their marine grottoes, the presence of their streamers serves to render detection by their enemies no easy Leslie.

What is reiroleumfProi. IL B. Com-iwall. of Princeton, N. has published in the June number of The- Popular Science Monthly an elaborate article on petroleum, from which we gather a good "many interesting facts.

The earliest mention of petroleum in Pennsylvania ocenrred in the report of the commander of Fort Duquesne, 1750, when he wit-; riessed the ceremonies of the Seneca Indians on Oil Creek. A prominent feature of these ceremonies was the burning: of the oil as it ooeed from the ground. Petroleum is a mixture of Be veral hydro car- boss, and contains also bituminous materials, sulphur, cgjbonaceous matter, sand and clay, and usually has a very offensive odor. The different constituents of petroleum are separated by fractional distillation into distinct compounds some are gaseous, others are liquids, ana others are solids. These are Tery numerous, and some -of them.pos-, Bess very marked properties.

Kerosene benzine are the only ones popularly known, but there are in addition probably twenty others which may some time or other come into notice. A traveler staying over night with a Texas farmer whose estate was miles and miles in extent, flaid to him You must have bugun life very early to accumulate such an estate as this." replied the farmer. "I began life when I was a mero baby." The Rev. Col. James Underdue.

During my long experience as a bookseller in this city I have bad thousands of inquiries for such a work. Mr. Dennett's LOUISIANA AS IT IS Is precisely the book that has been called for. It gives general satisfaction to my patrons rn city and country. If its true character were gsnerally known it would require ten times the present edition of 10,000 copies to supply demand.

C. C. HALEY, Bookseller. 19 Commercial Place. Branch, 153 Poydras street.

Aa experience of twenty-five years as book, seller in New Orleans will Justify me in saying that the book Just Issued by Mr. DanT Dennett, LOUISIANA AS IT IS, supplies a want loeg felt by residents and strangers. The demand for the book Is active, and is steadily increasing. JAMES A. ORES HAM.
