A small change famine is accordingly anticipated and a relief bill is talked of in Washington congressional circles. According to a Washington paper the Supreme Court will adjourn to Hay 8th, when all the decisions to be rendered this term will be handed down. The question of the constitutionality of the Granger laws as affecting certain Western railroads wfll probably be settled. The Arkansas Republicans decline to put a State ticket in nomination, but have resolved to send a Morton delegation to Cincinnati. Wherever the Republican party has grown too weak to take care of itself it may be confidently expected to go for Morton.

1 The Boston Post says that Charles lO'Conor is jealous of his professional honor, as he has certainly a right to be. His institutin libel suits against two New York papers is the latest indication of the great lawyer's pugnacity. Mary Harris, who shot and killed a Treasury clerk, in Washington, some years ago, and was acquitted on the ground of insanity, still lives at the eapital. About a quarter of her time she is incarcerated; then released till she chooses to return again, which she does quite regularly. Her face looks haggard and aimless.

Knight's Edition of Shaxsperb. To the student of Shakspere, whether actor or scholar, Mr. Chas. Knight's edition of the works of the great Bard is a well of delight. The work is rich in historical and legendary elucidation in explanatory notes; in the clearness and perspicuity with which the plays have been edited in the unrivaled beauty of its embellialimenta and typographical execution.

There are other character istics of the work which will challenge the admiration of the student and critic. Appended to each play is a collection of the readings which disputed lines have received, together with criticisms thereupon. Prefacing each play oomes the legend or the historical incidents on which it is founded. Thus is' afforded to the reader the most ample and exhaust ive compilation of authorities, with which to assist him in the elucidation of intricate texts, and in the discovery of The work is from the press of Messrs. Proposals most be directed to the Commissioners of the Consolidated Debt, and indorsed Proposals for Exchange of Bonds.

The right to reject aU or any bids is reserved. ED. PILSBUBY, Itawtd Administrator of Finance. AJ1TJSEMENT8. ,1 Judge Walker's a3 davit in thePiea yune case, now before the United States District Court, contains some highly entertaining revelations.

According to the Judge's version, that eld and reliable family journal has for the last two years been deriving much of its financial support from Kellogg, and other prominent officials. It does.net appear to have belonged to any body, in particular, and, what with its embarrass ments with the courts and its pecuniary obligations to the chief men of the Iiad ical party, its sphere of jourhalisfio iisefulness must have been as vague and undefined as its title If this suit goes on much longer, the community may discover the family secrets ol the 'Picayune, which would leave the genuine creditors of that bedraggled establish. ment a very faint prospect; of recovering their money through its profits. 1 Evening Times, May 6. i The jmblio will readily understand the animus which dictated the above paragraph.

The Times is vain enough to imagine itself the! rival, of; the Picayune, and weak" enough to hope that it can injure the reputation of a. paper so well estoblislied in the pub lie confidence by the publication of the ex parte statements of an interested party." is iore difficult to conjecture the motives which prompted" Judge Alex. 4 Walker to appear before a court pf equity, with bos yery remarkable affidavit emphatically and oompletely contra dieted by the testimony, of others, the records of other courts and his own written statements and It is true that the Judge is out of employment, but that fact affords no satisfactory solution of the puzzle for whatever may be. the result' of the ease now pending, his ituation in that respect is not likely to be ir the least alleviated. It has been suggested to us that her has" probably been influenced by feelings of personal' emiuty the "late A.

M. Holbrook, formerly editor and proprietor of this paper but there is no proper reason why such should be the case. We believe that Mr. Holbrook always paid tha judge the full Yalue. of bis services, and that he only parted with him because he considered those services no longer It was a question between employer and employee and we cannot understand how a man of Judge Walker's breadth of view can allow himself to be influenced by a consideration so essentially small.

It is well known to the public that Judge Walker did at one time interest' himself in a' certain association styled the "Herald Company." That company was composed of himself and. other unemployed journalists of immense capacity, but, unfortunately, of limited resources. They and he started a little paper and called it the "Herald" we forget now its precise views and policy, but our recollection is, that somehow or ther it failed to meet with anything approaching even remotely an en thusiastic popular support. It wasv we are informed, upon the ragged edge of utter bankruptcy the time Picayune was VoffeTecl. for sale by the New Orleans; Printing Company.

With i the instinct of rats abandoning a tanking ship, the members of the Herald Com pany made all haste to 'take refuge upon sound and floating timber. They bought the Picayune at sheriffV sale, giving a twelve months' bond for $20,000, the purchase price, with Joseph Hernandez as security. They afterwards sold it to the late A. M. Holbrook, one of the joint stockhold ers, in consideration of the assump tion by him of the bond given for the property, and he conveyed the title to the New Orleans Hcaye Priirtinff Company, a company, composed exclusively of the stockholders of the Herald Company, retaining himself a controlling interest.

The Picayune at first, under these new auspices, was not' a financial success. In spite of all the aid "afforded it by the powerful pen of Judge Walker and his confreres of the Herald, the Picayune lost money. It was necessary to raise money or 1 give up the papers Judge Walker and his associate claimants were either unwilling or unable to fanuab a single cent. When, therefore, they were retired from the ownership, what hardship was done them How much did they lose Their money'sT worth in the Picayune was a minus quantity." They! never gave one dollar to buy it they never paid one dollar to, maintain it. Theyt aay that the property is now worth $70,009.

What was it worth wher they were, by the force of cireum stances, excluded from its proprietor ship And yet Judge Walker has had the astounding presumption to go before a court of equity and swear that the paper is at present incompetently managed. "Does he imagine that he is more competent to manage it than its present conductors are. If so, why did he not give some evi dence of his capacity at the time he was himself a member of the Picayune staff We are forced to the conclusion that the Judge overrates himself. There are very few really useful men in aH; thp TBE PICAYUNE CASE. 1 1.
