Some of these forced cuts, such as the energy and lawn-service savings, probably sound good to many, but are other cuts bad for the schools? Losing positions has really had an impact on our community. It has put people out of work. But we have been able to right-size Seminole County Public Schools over the past several years. We have taken into consideration the declining student population and funding decreases. County voters recently turned down a half-cent sales tax that would have raised $260 million for school repairs.

How will its absence affect the schools? Weare putting a hold on all of our capital projects. For Jackson Heights Middle School, we had already selected a contractor. We are going to have to prioritize our school repairs. Scott says he wants to cut state spending. Are you concerned about school funding? I have heard the new governor wants to reduce school millage and property taxes.

But he also has said he does not want to cut school funding. We need to give him time and an opportunity to establish his education agenda. There is debate about the value of the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test. What is your opinion? I have been a proponent of increased accountability ever since the Plan for Education was instituted by Gov. Jeb Bush.

It has been successful in improving the quality of education. But Seminole County schools are more than just FCAT. That is why we focus on the not only the academics, but athletics and the arts. In what new directions do you see the district heading? We have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to reset the Central Florida economy. The zone from Lake Monroe to Lake Nona has the potential of having a cluster of high-tech businesses.

We are focusing on preparing students for jobs that we have the opportunity to have right here. We have a new bio-science program at Oviedo High. We have a solar-energy program at Lyman High. Your current contract runs out at the end of June. You said several months ago that you would wait until after the School Board election to discuss an extension.

Have you decided what you intend to do? It is not a top priority now. We will evaluate that after the first of the year. Right now my No. 1priority is to make sure we have our budget in place for next school year and to focus on student achievement. Forced desegregation and crowded classrooms marked his tenure from January 1969 to January 1973. And while he is remembered fondly by many now, widespread dissatisfaction with the school system at the time made him a one-term elected superintendent. was very invested in Seminole County schools, and being superintendent was what he aspired said his daughter, Jackie Crawford of Lake Mary. when he lost re-election, he said, never Angel, of Stone Island on the north shore of Lake Monroe, died Nov. 17 after a long illness.

He was 86. Angel was born in Louisiana and moved with his family to Sanford as a child. His father had purchased an old railroad car and converted it into a diner called Eat After graduating from Seminole High, he was off to World War II and a stint in the Navy as an aircraft mechanic in the Pacific. After the war, he earned a degree in education in Georgia and returned to Sanford to teach. He started at Seminole High in 1953 and later moved into administration as principal of Lake Monroe, Longwood and Pine Crest elementary schools.

He was principal of South Seminole Junior High School when he decided to make a run for superintendent then an elected office in 1968. He won, but his timing could hardly have been worse. Only a year into his term, Seminole was slapped with a federal lawsuit charging that its schools were segregated. The school district earlier had rushed to stave off federal intervention through a of enrollment plan, but federal officials said that still left five segregated schools. There was no easy resolution.

The federal case would drag on until 2006 before it was settled. Racial tensions in the schools peaked just before re-election bid, when a fight between black and white students at Seminole High forced Angel to recommend that the School Board hire guards to patrol the campus. Meanwhile, classroom construction had not kept pace with enrollment growth. Angel warned the public that higher taxes and a controversial year-round school plan would be needed to provide seats for all children. After losing the 1972 election to Bud Layer, Angel returned to working with students.

He was appointed principal of Teague Middle School and stayed there until his retirement in 1993. kids just loved said his daughter, who along with other family members, has received an outpouring of tributes to Angel since his death. just have a clue how an educator impacts was very well thought of by his students and everyone School Board attorney Ned Julian agreed.
