Tuesday, July 4, 1961 Honolulu Star-Bulltin 41 Reviewer Pulse of the City- Is Impressed Dance Recital Asian By Last Thursday Faculty Recital of Asian Dance, presented by the Summer Session and the Music Department of the University of Hawaii, reaffirmed that Hawaii is realizing ever more strongly mm leading center, its potential as a East-West cultural that there is a treciation for Big Isle Quake Activity Is 'Very Quiet' VOLCANO OBSERVATORY, Hawaii, July 4 Earthquakes beneath Kilau-ea Caldera arid the Kau Desert appeared to be on holiday today. Recordings were far below those registered a week ago. "Things are very quiet right now," said Dr. Jerry Eaton, Observ atory seismolo-gist. the most interesting activity since the weekend were two quakes which were strong enough to be felt.

One was fairly deep and centered in the southwest rift zone. The other, a shallow one, was about two miles deep and centered about three miles south of the desert seismograph station, eight miles from Halemaumau. growing ap-the under- standing and meaning delighted her audience with an exciting performance of Binasuan, which demands perfect balance of half filled glasses of water through many patterns of movement. Guest performers Zarina Zaman, dancer, and Pari-mal Choudry, drummer, who came to Hawaii as students of the East-West Center, are making an outstanding contribution to the exchange of East-West cultures. They brought great pleasure to the audience with their performance of Bharata Nata-yam which is considered the oldest dance tradition in India.

A large part of the success and interest in the Asian programs is due to the efforts of Barbara Smith, who brings together these fine artists and assists in arranging the programs. Marian J. Kerr Miss Huhm's interpretations never "fail to delight her audiences. Koishiro Nishikawa and Fukiko Kotobuki in private life, Mr. and Mrs.

Teruo Arai presented two quite different solo dances. Mr. Ni-shikawa's dance, Tamagawa, describing the views of the countryside surrounding the Tamagawa river, was one of the high points of the evening. Fukiko Kotobuki presented with beautiful control the slow movements of her dance, Mangetsu, which tells of a Geisha dancing to the full moon while she waits for her lover. The charm of the dances of the Philippines was warmly portrayed by Pat Valentin, who skillfully executed the dance Singkil in which long bamboo poles furnish both the pattern and rhythm for the dance.
