Dennis, who plays Chester, the lame deputy in Channel 9's "Gunsmoke," is the proud father of three sons Rick, 11, Rob, 6, and Rusty, 11 months. Being a father, of course, part of his pride stems from his knowledge that his sons are proud of him. He is, after all, a television star, and hardly any of the other children in his neighborhood can say that. Dennis is enormously fond of children.

His neighbors all love him because he likes to coach their kids in athletics in his back yard, which keeps the small fry off the streets. But there came a day when Weaver recognized the wails of his own young. He went to the door and listened. Rick, who was leading the group, was trying to comfort Rob, who was weeping bitterly. Starring veteran actor Rod Cameron, recently of "State Trooper," the show involves private investigator Dan Adams who lives at Coronado 9. It will be seen on Channel 4, Thursdays at 8 p.m.

One of Hollywood's biggest box-office attractions, the boys were playing "Gun-smoke," which seemed not too unreasonable under the circumstances. But Rick's efforts to pacify Rob were fruitless. "I want to be Matt Dillon!" he insisted. (Matt Dillon, of course, is the U.S. Marshal played by James Arness in "Gun-smoke" and is NOT the part played by Dennis.) Dennis was jolted a little by this unfilial attitude, but took it philosophically.

Apparently Rick, who was in charge of casting this show, had taken the role of Chester himself, Dennis thought. "I'm sorry," Puck told Rob. "That part's already taken." "I want to be Matt Dillon:" said Rob. "But you can't!" said Rick. "I am Matt Dillon!" Dennis, according to his wife Gerry, didn't say a word.

He just returned to his chair and stared at the fireplace. "Actors," she heard him mutter. "Everyone wants to be the star. Chester's not such a bad part. seem to be attracting the greatest numbers of viewers, particularly the established shows.

Restless and energetic, his first occupation soon gave way to a number of other jobs in different fields. Eventually he got to Hollywood. In 1953, Cameron made his debut on television as the star of "City Detective." Success in this series led him into the popular starring role in "State Trooper." The locale of the new series is interesting in itself. Coronado, which in Spanish means "crowned," is situated on a peninsula that forms the western side of San Diego On its western shore the Pacific Ocean spreads its foam-trimmed mantle along Coronado's wide, sandy beaches while to the east there is the matchless view of the busy harbor and sky line of San Diego.
