He was winner of many local races, Including the St. Thomas More Catholic Church 5K Run in Munster, for 2004,2005 and 2007. Ironically, his last race was the American Brain Tumor Association "Path to Progress" 5K, In which he earned 2nd place In 2007. Carlos worked as an environmental project geologist for Roy F. Weston Consultants from 1985 to 2000.

In 2000, Carlos started his own company, a minority-owned environmental consulting firm, Matrix Environmental. He was also a member of the board of the Chicago Latino Breakfast Club.
