Carlos survived his first battle with a brain tumor in 1986. As a brain cancer survivor who was passionate about running, Carlos went on to run the Chicago Marathon In 2004, and the Boston Marathon in 2006.

He was winner of many local races, Including the St. Thomas More Catholic Church 5K Run in Munster, for 2004,2005 and 2007. Ironically, his last race was the American Brain Tumor Association "Path to Progress" 5K, In which he earned 2nd place In 2007. Carlos worked as an environmental project geologist for Roy F. Weston Consultants from 1985 to 2000.

In 2000, Carlos started his own company, a minority-owned environmental consulting firm, Matrix Environmental. He was also a member of the board of the Chicago Latino Breakfast Club. He is survived by his wife, Sandra (nee Broglln); children, Kristen Serna, Stephanie Serna, Cariy Serna and Matthew Serna; his grandchild, Alden Serna-Schnur; his parents, Dr. Carlos and Donna Sema; brother, Stephen Serna; and his sisters, Mary (Peter) Milbrath and Adrienne (Jeff) Kalman.
