1k I E. Stevenson late- nt assistant postmaster Rennal under President Cleveland Ceneral Stevenson Is a resident of Illinois A HispoHttcal career has been ft noted one. wai twice electedlo congress from the thv teenth Illinois district now represented by Captain 3 H. Kowell. This dlstnet Is strongly republican but General Stevenson's popular Uy-aad personal influence Ie to great that he twice defeated one of the itrongwt republicans In the district.

When President Cleveland was elected General made first assistant postmaster general by the unanimous request of the Illinois democratic congressmen and he filled the office so ably that even the most bitter republican pl could not say anything Against him. He has repeatedly been offered good positions under the present administration but he is TOO lunCH A DEMOCRAT to neutralize himself by accepting. In personal appearance he is a tall shouldered commanding figure with a clear complexion light gray Lair and mustache with a clear line eye that looks directly at you. In conversation ho is direct and la a most pleasant talker and a fluent orator. As a campaign speaker he is hard to excel being Interesting logical lorciblo and humorous by turns and capable of holding and swaying his audience at will.

He is in the prime of me and it is safe to say his political career has just begun. Should Illinois ever swine in to the democratic column General Stevenson will undoubtedly sit in the senate as one of its United States senators a place he would fin with honor and distinction. He is a man of power in the democratic councils of his na tivo state and can have his party's nomination for the governor for the wing. Being closely connected with the leaders of the democratic party he may be traveling over the south feeling the pulse of the people as to the next democratic candidate but this is ho keeps the fact carefully concealed. General Steveuson and Major W.

L. Glessnereditor of the Recorderare old political cronies having fought many a hard battle to gether back in the 70's when General Steven- son was a candidate for congress and Major Glessner was editor of the Clinton Ill. Register and many are the anecdotes the writer then foreman of the Register could tell of the two and the schemes they would concoct to defeat the enemy and the wild rides they' would take to reach some democratic rally or meeting. The greatest tights were along in 76 when Tilden. was elected.

General Stevenson then being a successful candidate for congress from that district in which year Major Glessner carried a strong republican county into the democratic column by a small majority. General Steven- eons presence here recalls those old tlmesand it was with sorrow that he found Major Gless. ner absent in Atlanta. However he is on his Way to that place' and in alt probability the. two will meet in the Kimball house corridor in few days tid fight their battles over.

CoywoTON Oa. October" 11. TSpeciall On yesterday morning the family or Mr. Alien Dyer of this county and two' nerroe. were made very sick by eating biscuit made of four that is supposed to.

have been. poisoned. The flour was soxe that Lou Gaithex. colored had returned In place of sotaa meal borrowed by lice from Mrs. Dyer the day' before.

She" however is not suspected of having had any knowledge of the tact that the' flour was poisoned but Is supposed to be the intended victim of the would-be poisoner who it is be. rend. is Sarah enfordcolored. Sarah Ben. lord has been arrested and on her preliminary trial the.

following criminating facts were proven against her Sims had a grudge against LouGaither was desirous of being too Intimate with Lou's husband. and when her house was searched alter the poisoning. a key belonging to Lou's husband and unlocking the door to his house was found in Sarah's house between the mattresses to her bed. When asked about the key she claimed that it belonged to her and had been in her possession for some time. The teal owner of the key identified it as his own.

The biscuits have not been analyzed but the medl cal testimony so far taken indicates that the flour had arsenic in it. The supposition' is that Sarah Betrford put the poison in Lou thither's flour for the purpose of getting rid of tier and that a portion of it reached Mr. Dyers family In the manner before mentioned. Fortunately none of the persons partaking Of it suffered any serious consequences therefrom and they will alt recover from the effects of the poison. FIBEIJCGSEUN OUT.

Savannah Narrowly Escapes Another Con. flagration. SAVANNAH Ga. October 11. Special.

Firebugs were discovered this morning in an attempt to set fire to a house on the vest corner of Randolph and Perry streets. The block consists of large frame houses. P. Buttimer owns one on the corer and the adjoining one. Both are two-story houses.

Mrs. Paul occupies the one which the incendiaries tried to burn. They sprinkled the stoop with kerosene and stuffed cotton and llqhtwqod be. tween the stoop and the side of the house A neighbor Cross the street was getting up at 4 o'clock. Looking out of a window he saw a flash and the figures of two or three men.

He ran out on the street and the negroes ran off. The cotton which was also sprinkled with kero- sees was in a blaze. This was put out before the weatherboarding or the stoop caught. In a minute or two the house would have been on fire. AU of that section is built up with wood and the result mighthae proved disastrous.

The negroes were not recognized and there is no clew to them. The supposition is that they are members of a gang of. incendiaries who have been operating for months. The Macon Military Companies at Work and Will be here. Monday.
