Florida Highway Patrol troopers have not yet released the identity of the man who Friday night drove his sports utility vehicle through the window of Lovely Nails, a salon on Navy Boulevard.

Troopers said the driver was in the Lovely Nails' parking lot about 8 p.m., when he backed up, bumped into a car behind him, then accidentally punched the gas pedal, sending his truck crashing through the storefront. The truck pinned one woman against the salon's back wall before the vehicle stopped, troopers said, but no one was seriously injured. Four adults and the driver were transported to Sacred Heart Hospital. Charges had not been filed as of presstime Friday night, pending the results of an investigation. Christmas all but festive for state's homeless pets Knight Ridder MIAMI No festive trees adorn these cards.

No jolly Santas or shiny foil snowflakes. Affixed to cages at the Humane Society of Greater Miami, the file cards tell one of the holiday season's saddest stories: "Too busy." "No time." "Can't afford." "Doesn't get along with boyfriend." Behind them, newly homeless cats and dogs whine for affection or huddle in the recesses of their cages, stunned by their abandonment. "I wish they understood that we're trying to help them," sighed Kelly Grimm, the organization's spokeswoman, unsuccessfully seeking a response from a "stressed" Dalmatian, curled up and shivering. "But they don't. All they know is they're in a cage, and they think they're being punished." The holidays overload shelters with hundreds of inconvenient animals 60 in one harrowing day last week at the Greater Miami shelter, twice the usual tally at two facilities.

"People go on vacation, or the family comes, so the animals come said Rebecca Reynolds, who manages the organization's north Miami-Dade shelter. "It panics all of us, because the big influx is after the holidays," added Grimm, who nonetheless takes heart in rising adoption rates 152 so far this month, compared with 122 for December 1999. by a convicted felon. ODOM, JR. Rufus J. Odom died FLORIDA In the months after Christmas, she said, animals rejected as unwelcome gifts show up, many from puppy mills and pet stores that push pedigrees and profits to the detriment of puppies, kittens and older animals of uncertain ancestry in the shelters. Last year's holidays brought 220 surrenders in January 2000, steadily increasing to 634 by June, Grimm said. It's a cycle that South Florida animal-welfare advocates are desperate to break.

Instead of plopping a live animal under the tree, they suggest a gift certificate covering the cost of adoption shots, licensing, neutering and identifying microchips. The society charges $89 for a dog and $59 for a cat. It's $70 at the Humane Society of Broward County. Greater Miami also is offering a two-for-one cat special and three free basic obedience classes with every dog. While shelters house every imaginable permutation of mutt, they also contain a surprising number of purebreds like Dobermans, German shepherds and shar-peis.

Earlier this week, someone dropped off an Abyssinian cat at Greater Miami Humane. The cage card read: "Owner sick." "That's a $600 cat," Reynolds said. "But it doesn't matter how much they spend. The animals still end up here." Thursday, December 21, 2000 at a local hospital. Mr.

Odom was born February 3, 1937 in Pollard, to the late Rufus J. and Lottie M. Byrd Odom, Sr. He had been a resident of Pensacola since 1959 and retired in 1988 from Pensacola County Club as the maintenance supervisor. Survivors include his wife of forty-three years, Minnie L.

A special nephew, James Allen (Donna) ten grandchildren, Jason, Jodi, Tiffany, Joshua, Donald Cheryl, Stephanie, Dustin, Russ, and Haley as well as other loving family members and friends.
