4lta taken occasion to crlUclse jn nner the advertisements published In heralding the Aul Thanksgiving football game. tit the game was to- be plaj championship of the south. Many of the Georgia boys WJ Uke issue with Mr. Chandler ibis Uln. Anticipating this.

Mr. CtojWIel rJrou his Interview. which published bow more as a suggestion Up a crtt' tctm. He takes the posltlrt that no championship football game ad P3 In the south unless the southlP001166 13 wigage In Inter-collect gameS nd he adlcres to the oplntct that ntyaj5ttY of Virginia has a. tr team than Las the University Georgia.

citing the recent games with ph Caro- lira as an Index to tile slrojp of the two teams. Mr. Chandler Is a University Virginia roan and Is enthusiastic ltate games and gives testions on that tine. He Is Inter- ested In the game and the Rowing In- terview which he furnishes tliubllcauon Is exceedingly interesting Now that the football seas closed. actuated by a spirit of fairness cannot rfralu from offering a few rrke to the football world as to the preset status of fcctball in the south says MtCandltr I am led to do so chtenyto correct a false impression which I feel jiff as been created in Georgia by theSiaracter of Hi advertisement of the Georgla arne Thursday.

and the tilt of that came. The placard announci4 something like the following Auburn Georgia. fnr Championship of the Sot. Now It this was simply for effect ttJncrease the attendance to those who itderstand It that way it was a legitiutI advertise- mfllT. But to the crowd to attesded the game and the thousandtJTho read of It through th columns of TtiConstltutlon.

It appears that Auburn and 6 rgla really contended with each other oithe gridiron Thursday for We championship of the south. and that as a results that game the University of Georgia has the t. the champion footbaUteam In the south. Unless Virginia mother of the southern states be noti nsldered in he south then Is not theUghtest foundation for such a claim. An it is on this I' atone that the Georgia players or others for them.

can havjuiy such pre. ii an hypothesis whlchthelr eagerness and local college and state rri1e may easily and not unnaturally lead tie Georgia adherents to adroit. but 1 would be a strange unnatural and newjjcpwture from order and entirely misleading to the present public as to tl facts. There is no disputing the tact that the University of Georgia has an excellent team this year the tact is she has the best team south of treI I refer ttftt scorer of. Utorgia' games to auiialn Jltls statement.

Rut in justice let us eccetthe facts and content knowing that' Jahonesty this L' tile limits of Georgia's eIairna Let not nfc ardor of the admlren the Georgia am arid their wish for her to be so. Lrompt them to further the thought that i. rgia is the champion of the south for jSi Is not the case. 1 do not men to assert that the Athletic Association at the University of Qeor- represents to the. world that the university team Is now the champion of the south.

I do not suppose It does. It must know this is not the case. and Inasmuch as it is not the game should not have been advertised as It was. The tact is. the Unlvetilty of Virginia I pa is easily the best team in the south end a comparison of scores readily indicates ii For Instance both the University of Georgia and the University of Virginia I ave met th University of North Carolina this year.

The score to the tot same was to 16 In Get favor. and in the latter game 40 to 0 In Virginias favor. This Indicates that the score In a tame played now between Virginia and Oorgla would be about 30 to 0 in favor of Virginia. And college men know that. unlike baseball football scores can be relied upon as a fair criterion la determining the.

respective merits and strength of two teams. The truth of the matter Is that I do not know that there Is any svch thing as any team strictly speaking being champion of ne south for there is as yet no Inter-cot- legate arrangement by which the confess- rtlr best teams In the south meet each other every year and thus I think there is properly no such title In existence. But tar as there one Virginia holds It and has dote so for six years. This Is In Toy Judgment one of the principal bin- rtrancet to sthltlo advancement In the' Colleges of the south. Whenever the pt-In- r-Ipal colleges shall come together and nprw upon an arrangement like this a new In athletic progress In the south would be upon and then there would.

be no reason why In a few years the south could not muster aseffective forces TMI a letlc field diamond and gridiron alike as northern i for one would hall with Hp Hm en fr eight ern colleges foremost In athletic progress could thus combine as friendly rivals for athletic prfmacy. and the Increase in athletic In- iV td al3 In the au dance at our institutions would promptly follow. Two points th northern end of Tekyl and the southern end of St. Simon Islands- have no doubt greater advantages than any others for commanding the entrance to the harbor of Brunswick. All vessels of any considerable size have to enter between those points which are about one and' a quarter miles apart.

They are undoubtedly admirable locations for fortifications this having been demonstrated during the civil war when a garrison each of a regiment. found earth works and with their batteries drove off every federal gun boat wiilch" sought an entrance Into the port. Their works are yet standing. proving the permanency of sand In constructing torts. There are tour ports of entry In Georgia and none of them are as badly exposed as Brunswick.
