IB3 to probe accident "All precautions will be taken so that something like this never happens again." Ramon Duran, deputy director of the City Depart- ment of Parks and Recreation, spoke yesterday of Fri-day's tragic accident in which a hail of 57 coconuts struck and killed a two- year-old girl at Kapiolani Beach Park.

Duran said the City will begin an investigation to- morrow and will consider adjusting its coconut-tree trimming schedule if the in- -vestigation shows it is need- ed. Duran said the City now -hires companies to trim co-conuts from the Kapiolani Beach Park palms every eight months. ON FRIDAY afternoon, a 133-pound cluster of coconuts fell from a 50-foot palm in the City park while a woman was changing a child's diaper under the tree. Killed was LeanneKeiko Fujinaga, 2, daughter of -Mr. and Mrs.

Richard Fujinaga of 47-503 Hio Place. The woman was the child's aunt, Jeanne Ono, 26, of 931 Kopke she suffered scrapes and bruises. The accident was Hawaii's first recorded fatality from falling coconuts. Police have not discovered why the entire cluster of coconuts fell. It is unknown whether the trees -were diseased.

The coconuts were green and underdeveloped, weighing about two pounds each. Some of the nuts appeared about the size of a slightly deflated football. DURAN SAID the longest period that trees may go untrimmed here is eight months. The trees at Kapio- 6.90 CHILDREN'S SHOE SPECIALS A super-zooper group of famous name children's shoes for school, dress or play, now at fabulous savingsl Buy now at low sale price and be ready to send them back to school. "Green coconuts with flowers would not normally -need to be cut for five months," Duran said. The City staggers its tree-trimming schedule on Oahu so that only certain areas require trimming each month, Duran said. "We do not base our schedule on the summer -season (when more people go to City beach parks)," -he said. "BUT UPON completion of our investigation, if it shows a need to vary our -schedule, we will. All precautions will be taken so that something like this never happens again." "The City expresses its sympathy for this unfortunate and undeterminable ac- cident," Duran said.
