TIlE TENTH ANNIVERSARY OF BAPTIST TABERNACLE CELEBRA TED ON SUNDAY Many Services Held in the Church in Commemoration of the Event Dr. Len G. Broughton Preaches Instructive Sermon. I If5 rft rho tenth anniversary of the Tabernacle Baptist church. of which Dr.

Len O. Broughton Is the pistor was cele. brated yesterday at th tabernacle with exercises which lasted through the day. The church was beautifully decorated for the occasion and at all the services the. building was packed and large numbers of friend or the Institution were unable to gain admittance.

The program began with the Sunday school exercise a number of the members making Interesting addresses on the. work accomplished by the School. A special song service. the children was also held. it II o'clock Dr.

vii 12. As many of you know today Is the tenth anniversary of our tabernacle work. and in thinking over the goodness of God to us during this time. I have felt It proper to celebrate the day by giving a review of some of our ups and downs during this time. It was.

eleven years ago today that I came to this city" as pastor of what was known as the Third Baptist church on Jones avenue now the Jones Avenue Baptist church. My coming was a little peculiar. I had previous to this conducted a three weeks' evan. fgellsUc meeting under the. auspices of the Baptist churches of this city.

The meetings wero held first In the Second Baptist church with Dr. Henry McDonald I pastor. and then the First Baptist church. with Dr. W.

W. Lan- drum as pastor. During that meeting I tell greatly In love with Atlanta. I saw its prospects that It was destined to be the metropolis of the southern states. And having In my mind certain flied conceptions about church- work and methods.

and desiring an opportunity where these conceptions could best hear fruit. I decided that. If th way opened for me to come to Atlanta I was coming. Not a great while after this. the Third Baptist Church pastorate was va nt and I received a call to become the pastor.

At the time of the call I was engaged in eang tlc meetings In Memphis. Tenu. I at once informed the church that I would come by Atlanta on my way to Roanoke. Va. where I was pastor of the Calvary Baptist church.

and have a conference with the representatives of the church rela- XItThe conference was held In a room at the Klmball house and a downor ore men selected by the church met tn and we talked over- the whole sit- Satlon My proposition to them was that I would consider their call. provided they would agree that so soon aiT the location of the church proved adequate to the tine of work that I had in mind. they would with me near the center of toe city and build a tabernacle of sufficient size and char- acterto do the work. This was agreed and the first Sunday in January. WOewith my church In Roanoke pressing roe to remain.

Besides. It was soon llsed that the location was Inadequate for the work that we hid In 4nd. Consequently In. about six months we began the consideration of ySrtesTlon ff moving. The present 4 site of the tabernacle was the we could then see.

and wedeclded to Purchase and begin work at once upon the new tabernacle The church at that time wa very poor In this worlds ooda. teachers and scholars It looked almost like child a play to see such a small band In such a large building At II o'clock when the first sermon was preached the house was full and I preached from the text And I. If I be lifted up from the earth. will draw all men unto Me. a sermon bad never preached before and hav never preached since. The occasion bas.

somehow never presented Itself when I could again deal with that text I flball never forget the feeling Chat I bad that morning Some of you will recall- my. reference to It. I felt that we were wholly In the hand- of Ood to do His bidding and that we would necessarily have to pass through great trials and tribulations that the work that we had Set out. to do was to a great extent. new and novel In this community.

But I felt sure cit success. because the little band associated with me was so. faith- Sul. I do not believe that their superior in this respect has ever been found and too I believed that the conception that we had for the Christian church was of God and. therefore.

bound- to succeed. My prophecy that morning- has been realjed at least. in some respects. Surely no people ever passed through great" er trial than we have had. The corn- rrrunty understood our financial condition and our lack of experience in promoting such an enterprise ana many prophecies were made of failure Some prophesied that It would not be six months before the building would he ed as a livery stable others thought It- perhaps would be bought for a stating rink or a dance hall Very few.

if any outside of our own little optimistic band gave us a word of encouragement. but we pressed ahead sacrificing at every point many doing without the necessities of life until today by the blessing of God we are what we are. property. Through the generous gift of Dr. II. Low. who had become a member of our church.

and who i now in the glory we were en abled to build our Sunday school annex. During these ten years we- have re ceved into the church 3914 members. a record which we feel has not been surpassed by any church in all this land. Our Sunday school has gone from inn to I 500 Our financial receipts for all the various departments of the church during this time has been $413022 70 Most of this has come through the gifts of. the church and the friends that it has made In.

various parts of the world. while a great deal has come from the direct pay departments of our various Institutions Our responsibilities havelBcreaed until now it takes 70000 to run the different departments of the work for a year. Instead of the pastor attempting to do the work as in the beginning now the staff of paid workers associated with him numbers thirteen. This includes the workers In the church proper and also the various institutions of the church. The congregations of the church have remained universally the largest in all this country.

Recently a man who has traveled all over the United States and carefully studied church conditions has said that the Tabernacle maintains the largest regular congregations of any church Im Anverica This is phenomenal especially' when It 1 remembered that the pastor has been away from the church so much of the time engaging In work in various parts or the world. It Is not strange for so large a congregation to be held together for special services by special attractions but to find a permanent gathering of ten years' standing as large as we hay at the Tabernacle is nothing short of a wonder. The Original Conception. 1 hays already referred to the conception which led to the undertaking of our Tabernacle work. I feel that perhaps It would be Interesting to know Just what that conception To um it up in a single sentence it was this that the church of Jesus Christ should undertake in Ins name to supply every human need.

With this idea to view. we plunged in to tort what La known as an institutional church. Our first la stltution planned was the March Biwe conference and school of method This was Inaugurated on the day that1 we Tea tend the Tabernacle JSd last5d ftei" digs and every March a time this conference has wSh Mr. 5t ft t011 was planned Mm rMti SodyJllmielf. to the Murray Hi ThKT fc er ueo.

us all. the rest of oar wprk has had. but today we point with pride to our. new and splendidly equipped infirmary costing more than tto000. With' a corps of consecrated Christian officers and a faithful band of from' twenty-five to thirty nurses.

We are. proud of this Institution. To me personally It la a delight. Having been trained as physician and leaving that profession to enter the ministry I thank God for this opportunity to express myself in the line of my. training only to da It wholly in the name of Christ.

We also point with pride to our young ladles' dormitory an instttu. tlon blessed of God la ways that the world will never know anything about. Here furnish a Christian home with regular religious exercises to young women who are boarding in the city. It Is in sense a rescue home It works upon a higher- principle than that the principle of prevention rather. than rescue.

It re quires a good character to begin with. and a good character maintained In. order to be a member of this family. Something over two thousand young women nave passed through. this in stitution and received Its blessing since Its beginning.

In addition to these- large lustltu- tons connected with the' work a number of smaller enterprises and Institu tlons are carried on beside the regular work of the church Itself such as is found In any well church. In this way we have done it least something In the way of carrying out the original conception that' we had of the- church. namely that It should as far as possible. supply every human need. Tuckllag- Public Questions.

It Is known generally that out" position has always been one of straightforwardness. that th church should have definite convictions with reference to all questions to which a moral principle is Involved. and that we should not hesitate to express ourselves. This we. have tried to adhere to and In so doing we have made a.

great many enemies well as friends. One of the first fights that. we made was in behalf of the transfer system Oft the street railway. At that time there. was no suck thing as transfers In.

Atlanta. The poor people who had to Wl the street cars most were forced to pay straight fare' every time th changed cars. We saw that to be a hardship. an injustice and so made a public fight against It. Some of the papers now so friendly to us.

came out edlto- rtally and crttlciBed us for prostituting the pulpit to deal with purely secular matters that were other peoples business I am not saying that we had anything to do with our present magnificent. transfer system. but I do say that we were- the first on the band wagon when the band began to play. Another fight that' I recall with a. neat deal or pride la the one that we made against the lowdown dance halls In the city.

With. a policeman I went incognito and visited these dives and then came out in the pulpit and de mended their suppression. Again we were criticised for out methods but thank God. there Is no such thing as a. public dance hall of this character In the city today nor hem there bean one- for a long time.

Again there was our fight against pool selling on. horse races which was tolerated at that time over the city. I do not know the number of those planes that we had here at that time. I became Impressed that I should give my strength to breaking up that iniquitous species of gambling and so went Incognito through- these places. I wanted to get sufficient evidence.

remember very well meeting a certain. preacher who lived here at that time and telling him of my. project. He begged me- for tn sake or the dignity of my position tot to do it But I proceeded and the first person that I saw that I recognized was tM year son of that preacher. losing all his money while under the influence of strong drink.

After I had come away I went to. that boys father and told him bout It and 1 shall never forget how he laid his heed on my shoulder and wept caving Go ahead In that work. I pray God to forgive me for trying to Interfere with you. You- see. it was Quite another thlnar when his own boy was involved.

That is the trouble with the majority of us today There la no great sorrow so long as it Is ih other that hurt. This fight alnst selling was a cng and tedious one But you know the situation today. Long ago sell ngi wa put out of the city. and now It S. out of me tt at well.

On the same line was the fight made against the buoketshop system of wrniWhyr the speculation on futures. and now that is a thing of the put. Burned In Xfll Perhaps one of OUT most i eatlonal battle was waged over the lynching question. Sonic of you will recall It. A negTO brute.

after committing one of the most dastardly crimes ever committed in this or other states. was caught and burned on Sunday afternoon about 35. miles from the City and two long excursion trains putted out from our depot In the afternoon to carry the crowd 1 at wanted to ee the burning That night. In the Tabernacle. I paid my respects to the railroads fur running the trains.

to the city for allow- ng them to run. to the newspapers for T' out extras with a sensational write-up of the whole transaction and the state authorities for not at tempting to interfere in this species of savagery. It made a treat stir a nesi her of people arose In the midst of my remarks and started to Ute door and I called upon the ushers to-lock the doors anti bring the keys to me. declaring that I had a right to speak my convictions and to demand courteous behavior That night our Tabernacle was vandalized by certain hoodlums to Who" their contempt tot our position There was a great stir ttirougfoout the country by reason of it au. and were censured almost universally by the press.

But few pl have ever known how we were- made to suffer My wKe at. that time was sick and the mail brought me a box which was opened In her presence. It contained charred bone and flesh of the burned negro with a letter the nature of which I could' not and would not repeat. This was not all In two' places in this city at that time I was burnt In eSlgy. Of course.

this was done by the lowest scum of our The good people so largely- In the majority had nothing to do with It and In no sense sympathized with It. But thank God. that is all in the past. Today there Is not a newspaper in this country that otoe not we Its strength to the condemnation of. lynching in any form.

Another part of our fight has been in favor of municipal purity. We have stood from first to last in favor of dean moral municipal administration. What we have done along that line' is too fresh In the memory of ill to need to can for comment. Th rubo generally knows our convictions sod th voice of the ballot box. he.

Indorsed out" position. Of course. we have made a treat many enemies along this line of Mnle. There are men today whowoold gladly do us any hurt by reason or our position. but what we have done II Seen done with a sense or' duty impelling us and we have nothing to regret to an the strttgcUa Assssited ii Mini times have been la Jeopardy.

AS sects of threats have been made. Some of you will recall how one Wednesday night while conducting our prayer meeting a rook was thrown through tfi window from my Back just missing my head. and striking a post. It was thrown with such force that. the rock was sli4sbed when It.

hit the post. Had it bit my head itwould havo killed me Instantly. 1 have mentioned these thlngs for the purpose of showing something ipf the struggles that we have passed through In the days thaqle tar behind ON LSTRUN FOR VIE" AS TOLD BX ATLANTA BOY The following interesting letter hat been received in Atlanta. from. As il said before. we had happy time. but not a happy the Christmas before- I was theft at home With my loved ones and the girl love beet. Asekors la Pie Harbor. The fleet left Trinidad on the lit of January 1908 for Rio de Janeiro.

Brazil. We had a fln trip of. twelve days over. the deep blue- see. which was very calm and smooth.

The weather became warmer the nearer we' approached Rio. On' the twelfth day. early la the morning land. was sighted and before noon we had dropped anchor In the harbor of Rio. As soon I the ships Were all anchored some began to coal ship others sent men ashore on liberty to see the pretty city and to enjoy themselves as they chose.

Several of my shipmates and myself made a. pleasure trip up Into the mountains. It was I a miles from the city to the place we ere going. We rode a street tar partW the way. the other we rode on.

Of these' things I need not urrpe tttlen. are In the put They occurred in the earlier days of our woi and as God is my witness mere today In my heart a single feeling or resentment against any man or set or men that had any part In theta. During all the years we have had our friend as well as our enemies.

I do' not belleve that any man or movement ever had truer or nobler support ers than God has given me. both. at home and abroad. There has been the church. which has.

always been loyal and true. To be sure like any other movement. It will now and then have Internal differences and dissensions. We have not Ibeefi exempt from- these but having a fixed. conviction end pressing ward its fulfillment we have gone steadily ahead.

Until today the sky is brighter than we have ever known It. Praise for Helpers. I do not reel like I. could close this address without lying expression concerning some of the- agencies that have aided us In the accomplishment of our work. I must mention.

the faithful sop- port and operation of my official board. To be sure. we have had at times differences of opinions but most beautifully have we blended together. The work. that we have done could not.

have been done had not been ton such loyal support. The women of our church have played no small part in our ac eompuahmenta eo true so willing have they ever been to spend and be spent to carry out- the slightest wish that we have made known. I have never known such a band. Then too I feel that I want to go down In our history the name of at- least one man. not a member of our church who at time time when we were building our Tabernacle and had to nave help or give op came to our res' cue and made it possible for us to borrow 11000 from one of the banks.

He volunteered to' go on our paper with us that we might get this money and' complete our building. I refer to Deacon 7. Maddox of the First Baptist church of this city. God bless Brother Maddox. and may.

he get tome comfort from the thought that ho helped to make possible what we are now doing in the various lines of our work. I should like also If I had the time to call the roll or many other faithful men and women outside of our church. who have tender great service. but I cannot. do now.

Surely everybody who knows expects that I will mention In this connection soy assistant brother B. H. Peacock. Prom the first he lisp been my- chief lid and much of the. success is due to him.

We are deeply grateful to our friends. God knows my' heart when I say that I feel unworthy of their confidence and of their help. but I have tried to be faithful to their trust. I am eons at I have beentfioneat with what they have given me I have been a wise In th distribution of It as I knew how. And all I can say is that whatever I am entrusted with.

as the head of this work I shall faithfully ODder God. try to' use to the glory of God and to the blessing or needy humanity. One of the greatest agencies for good that has been contributed to us has bees the faithful staff of physicians and urgeona who have given their time and talents to time unbuilding ot oar Tabersacle infirmary. and I feel very grateful to We can never repay them.
