The vehicle will be used as a free shuttle for visitors and residents going to the hotel and Marketplace. The reconditioned sampan will be the Village entry in tomorrow's Kameha-meha Day Parade in Honolulu. Kane, an ex-Hiloan, is an amatuer historian and a devotee of the sampan bus. He bought the sampan, a 1941 Plymouth, from Isidro Go-doy, who drove the bus for many years, carting around countless school children, visitors and elderly Hiloans who had resisted buying their own cars.

Kane asked Asao Furu-tani, owner of the tiny Olaa Body Shop and the last of the sampan bus makers to completely recondition the vintage vehicle. Kane, said Furutani "did a thorough job on the body, welding and rusted frame, replacing much of the metal work and wood framing, and pounding out and filling dents. "He sent the brightwork to Honolulu for re plating, and he painted the sampan a bright, cool, sunshine yellow," Kane said. "He did all this under the watchful eyes of dozens of interested and appreciative citizens standing on the sidewalk outside of the open storefront, one-car Olaa Body Shop. "This obviously was a labor of love for Mr.
