Coaches Find Lesson Success of Tricks Shift Plays and Time Fakes Were Used to Advantage by Some of the Jest Teams in Country. fly Walter Camp.

pyrlght au by Otis F. Wood. summing up the lessons of the football season one can say that it his eyes open to every possibility of the game. not only the new plays. but the revamping of his old ones.

Spread plays. which occasionally in some season for the last half dozen years have been attempted stilt have possibilities. especial. ly as a measure of disconcerting for a mometit the opponents. Shift plays are still good even against greater Improvement in the knowledge of defense and the greater ability by backfield men to meet the forward pass.

Georgia Tech brought north the usual amount of shift plays and did better against Plttsburg than the year before. Minnesota proved by her defeat of Michigan with Williams' old shifts work- log well that this style of play was by no means out of date even though there had been considerable tendency to speak of these as old fashioned. But these shifts have made their mark on the game and a great many teams used variations of them In one form or another. The unbalanced line became the rule rather than the. exception taken generally.

The di rect pass to a backfield man rather than through the hands of the quarterback was used more and more. In most teams it was interspersed with passes through the quarterback. But has certainly come to sta In certain forms. Tricks Made Good. Many of the old time tricks revamped somewhat.

were brought out and good gains were at times made With them. The most notable of these' were the end and cries- crosses. There was also the old time one of the fake forward pus of' a man coming behind the passer and taking the ball out of his hand. But an addition was made to this in the shape of plays finally even- lusting In a forward pass by the second recipient of the ball. Per- jir lisp.

the greatest weakness and the one which was most expensive to some of the leading teams was the olly of giving up the off aft- CT being scored upon. This is an actual free gift to the opponents of 5at least SO yards of territory. Few coaches seemed to reaUa jjiat a distance that was sufficient iHaJso for their Kickers in the early art of the season would prove too short when the team was up against a good line and in an Important contest where the oppo- Isnts charged hard and fut. There great deal more blocking of runts than ever should have come Uo teams of the quality that made this mistake. There was also a mlng epidemic of fumbling.

There Is nothing. that takes the heart out of a team as fumbling that weakens a line as suddenly as that ominous sound of a blocked kick. It makes them slow ift charging for the rest- of the game. The forward pass was developed much more largely than ever before and continued its progress towards 51 real Incorporation in the form of a running attack. For a time this forward pass was the resort of a defeated team to recoup their fall.

The sophomores were greatly aided by the work of an Rape R. L. Stokes and Daniels. McFadden and Powell Jones were the best bets or the Junior clan. In previous years the relay has ended in a scrap between the fresh- men and sophomores and It is more.

than probable that a thrilling af fair of this nature will follow the heel and toe' speed carnival. The athletic committee has made Its selection of men who are to wear the "E's" for excellence in football. As Emory does not put a varsity football team at the end of the football season the athletic committee selects the twelve best football players In school and gives them the which Is worn with pride by the Emory athletes. Today it is a part of the offensive of every first- class team and thus backed up by a running game which forces the line hard enough so that the secondary defense Is caned upon to support that line it becomes a real weapon. It the secondary has to go up to the line to help out it leaves an opponent for the forward pass and vice versa if the secondary is nept back by forward passing It cannot support the line quickly enough to prevent certain running gains.

and it is evident that this forward pass is needed. for there has been no great amount of progress in the ordinary running offense. Difficulties or Defense. There is less chance of a team- starting at midfield and making consistently its 10 yards in four downs until it puts the ball across the goal line than has been the case in former years and we are waiting for some tactician to de velop new formations and new methods of running play which shall once more put the defense in difficulties. The.

season of au had hundreds of star men in the back field and yet these consistent steady gains down the field were not as frequent as In many former seasons where new formations and new tao. tics had been sprung for the first time. There were still some teams who faled to take advantage of the kicking game and would struggle with running plays in their own goal line until they came to a fourth down. but as a rule most of the teams realized that it was taking too big chances to wait till the fourth down and also comprehended the fact that to gain 10 yards twice from their own yard line out to their yard line by sheer power of driving plays was a waste of energy and that it was far better to kick early unless there was a strong wind to contend against than to use up force in an attempt of this kind. The season also developed a touch better knowledge on the part of the attack of what plays to use on certain numbers of downs.
