SOPRANO 1,000 feet in a preconditioned personnel transfer capsule, gradually undergoing pres-surization to withstand pressure 35 times greater than on the surface. Then they emerged and swam another 10 feet down. The divers wore ad vanced-design equipment including wet suits similar to those of scuba divers. They used a technical diving system called Mark 2.

Two sailors using similar equipment and the pressure chamber a month ago had set a Navy depth, record of 945 feet. Wednesday about 60 miles northwest of San Diego near San Clemente Island. The old mark of 1,004 feet was set in 1962 by two Swiss divers, one of whom died in returning to the surface. The four sailors were lowered to a depth of about SAN DIEGO, Calif.
