H. Jones. Jr. was nominated and unanimously elected permanent chairman. Mr.

Hermance offered a resolution which was unanimously adopted that. the meeting earnestly support the candidate nominated and also give their support and aid to the candidates selected by the other districts.

The nominating speeches were short. and all showed how the minds of. the people are centered on divorcing the schools from politics or anything that resembles politics. Every man in nominating his candidate made it plain that he was naming' his candidate in their opinion the Best man. but It another was chosen.

the winner would be given absolute support. While the several ballots were being taken there were short speeches by Professor Dykes. E. C. Buchanan.

Charles D. Atkinson Gordon Johnston. Dr. Melver and. others.

Professor Dykes said that the schools should be lifted out of politics that. they need the attention of the people. and that the way was now open to give that attention. He predicted. that the schools would be placed on a higher plane by the action of the Parent- Teacher association.

School Improvement association and other interests which are determined to place men on the. board who are above political trickery. Mr. Buchanan predicted that the new school board would be hampered in its work by the council which controlled the strings. Ontrallsrd This statement was answered by Mr.

Atkinson. who said that in the board the people would have a centralized government for the schools and would be able to place the responsibility which hitherto they had been unable to do. While those eighty men and women were standing there in the night without lights and using matches to see how to write their ballots. in an effort to better the welfare or their chWdren and the children of others. they dldnot forget that clad army of two million which at that very hour were fighting and dying In the cause of democracy Mr.

Atkinson drew a picture or the boys in khaki in France and then Mr. Buchanan started the liberty loan cards4around. and very soon 960 was subscribed by those who hall already subscribed their limit. Then it was that Chairman Jones put up the gavel of this momentous meeting. for sale In Liberty Bond subscriptions Hollingsworth subscribed 100 and a baby bond for the little rule which Mr.

Jones used In presiding. Mr. Holroway was called on for a speech. and he moved that the convention form Itself into a campaign committee to inform the general public of the candidates nominated. He said it would be a pity for the' candidate nominated to have opposition but If.

perchance the politicians put out a candidate the voters should be informed of what this meeting had done and others had done. and what the candidates named by the school patrons represented He thanked Mrs. Thompson and Mrs. Hermance for their work in working interest in the meetings. Following the nomination of Mr.

Fleming he was sent for and made a brief address stating that when a committee representing the Greenwood school called on him and asked that hei allow his name to come before the1 convention. lie thought first of refusing. but when the told him it was the dut of patriots to accept such an office when drafted he felt that he would be worse than a slacker not to accept. He said he lo the schools of Atlanta having started in at the Iv Street school at the age of 7 and graduated from the high school eleven years I Will do all in my power and ability to further the interests of our schools' said Mr. Fleming In closing.

Mr. Thompson. whose name was before the convention. while the crowd was waiting for Mr Fleming to appear. made a short talk and said that if he had a vote In the convention which he had not.

he would have voted for Mr Fleming. MRS. SUSAN HILL DIES AT RESIDENCE OF HER DAUGHTER tits. Susan Hill. one of the best- known and best loved women of Atlanta died at 11:15 clock last night the residence of her daughter Mrs.
