They have to scramble to find material. "If there isn't anything decent to watch, the viewers might go back to reading books. It puts a burden on the network economically. After losing the cigarette advertising and other accounts due to the recession, the prime-time cutback is another handicap I don't think they need right now." is going into its fifth season," Rowan said. "The public may be ready to say so long to Dan and Dick.

But I still hold the same views about the FCC ruling. I don't think the local shows will hold the interest of the people. "We did 'Laugh-In' shows on pollution in a comedy way. (I'm a nut on pollution.) We got the problems across in an entertaining way, not in a dry serious way. The sponsors won't buy ordinary public service programs.

So it will be difficult for the stations to produce them. "I think the first season (of the prime-time cutback) will be a bummer. The local stations are not prepared to fill the time with quality programming. If the FCC will not change the ruling, the local programs must improve. And syndicated shows will increase in prosperity." ROWAN is not afraid to speak out on an issue; this should be obvious to anyone who has seen him and partner Dick Martin make their infamous "Fickle Finger of Fate" awards to people or 4 organizations they consider in the wrong.

Asked if he agreed with a CBS executive who recently said members of the FCC have no background in the TV industry, Rowan agreed and went a step further; "Of the network executives I know in programming, their essential occupation suits them best for law or business. They are not essentially creative people as opposed to writers, directors and actors." Asked where he and Dick find the outstanding talent for "Laugh-In," Rowan replied: "EACH PERFORMER is a different case. But all are good improvisational actors who have been, at one time or another, in a Second City kind of troupe. Our people must be funny and able to retain their cool. That gives spontaneity and spark to the show.

We will go a different route rather than the planned script when we feel it. "'Laugh-In' is always looking for professional talent. We have no time to coach amateurs. The actors must do it now and do it right. That takes training: and professionalism." Rowan said "Laugh-In" producer George Schlatter does most of the talent hunting.

"Dick and I stay away from it. We have so many friends who would like to be on the show. But when we see someone we like, we tell George." In other wrords, they let George doit. -I W4 "Dick (Martin) still plays. He can shoot a 95 or an 82 and it doesn't matter to him."
